Is this the best way of disposing of old HDDs?

I just cracked open this HDD from an old laptop (it's a Western Digital hdd), just out of curiosity, and discovered the platter shattered as if it were made of glass. Even though it feels light like plastic.
>>
>>52543636
I destryed mine and then I threw it in the bin.
>>
>>52543636
The correct way of disposing of a HDD is to hand it in to your local council so they can safely destroy it
>>
>>52543636
Just write over the entire drive with 0's, and then smash it.
>>
I have a local guy who melts the platters because they have a metal he wants. I destroying a hdd in Mt. Doom should be sufficient as well
>>
Pour hotglue on the platters
>>
cum on it
>>
Im gonna shoot my HDD with a pellet gun right on the platter. Then ill piss, put lighter fluid and burn it. After that I'll safely dispose of it.
>>
>>52543636
It IS made of glass!
>>
Blast it with piss.
>>
Burn, literally toss it in fire OP.
>>
Cut into 196 pieces. Hide each individial shard in each country.
>>
RARE EARTH MAGNET
>>
Personally id use a blow torch and make it disappear. Degaussing works as well.
>>
>>52543830
This.

As alternative buy flourine and use it to melt the disks (chemical reaction) in a steel bucket.
>>
>>52545023
>flourine
fluorine* I meant, you need water to start the reaction after you have both the disks and fluorine in the bucket.
>>

>>
>>52543636
A 10 min dip in saltwater will make it completely unreadable.

After that, just take it to the county dump (dunno if Euro has these)
>>
The safest way to maintain the privacy of your data is to destroy the platters, take the pieces of broken platter and soak them in some type of flammable fluid, stab an NSA agent in the neck and let the blood soak into the grooves, and then light it on fire.

Only the heat from burning NSA blood can permanently erase data from a hard drive. Not even melting the disks will work.
>>
>>52544643
Then why does that glass feel so light in the hand? Feels like plexiglass.
>>
>>52545023
Why a steel bucket?
It will melt through plastic?
Where do I dispose of the chemical after?
>>
>>52545054
>fluorine
I assume you mean a solution of hydrofluoric acid. Either way, a highly toxic chemical.

I think you've been watching too much Breaking Bad.

Its often coated silicon or a metal alloy both are very common its impossible to say what platters are made of since it varies so much.

Yea Laptop 2.5s Shatter. They're too thin.
Thicker 3.5 platters can actually bend like tacos without breaking.

I usually just hammer a screwdriver through them when requested to destroy them. If not I zip tie them together to make Platter Garland. Got about 30 feet currently.

TL;DW: it is nearly impossible to destroy harddrives
>>
>>52543636
that will make it unreadable to almost anyone but those shards still have magnetic data on them and even a small shard is large enough to hold a lot of data.

if I were to get every shard I could glue them onto a normal platter and use a single sided head to read that data again, it would be corrupted but that corruption would be easy to sort out due to error correction data that would still exist. I could recover parts of any file on your system and probably a lot of complete smaller files.

NSA or private firm would be able to get almost everything. private firms charge over 100k for these types of things especially if the platter is so damaged that they have to use an electron microscope to recover the data (which is a thing and can recover data that has been overwritten more than 2-3 times!!!! HOLY SHIT).

you can nuke it in an old microwave or what I would do is put it in a fire or oven at high temps.
>>
>>52547256
coating is usually powdered magnesium crystals as they have a tiny tiny magnetic moment = high data density.

Nobody is going to find your cuck and cartoon porn or care if they do, you should be flattered to think someone would actually rummage through the trash trying to recover a shattered platter full of useless shit on your drive. Anyway all of your data is already mirrored on an NSA server

Well, I didn't plan on destroying it. I just had this HDD from an older laptop which failed, so it was replaced.

I got curious, so I thought I'd crack it open to see how the platters look like before I throw it out. I had no intention to destroy it. I discovered the platters simply shattered to pieces, before I could get to them. Must have been all those deformations taking place, from the tools I used (some pliers and a screwdriver).
>>
>>52543636
>I just cracked open this HDD from an old laptop
Older hard drives tend to do this. New-ish ones (less than 10 years old) tend to be metalic and can bend
>>
>>52551218
LOL i would have just used a screwdriver but what do i know

>>
>>52551238
Yeah, I tried that first, but I just don't have any screwdriver that fits that type of screw. So I ended up using a heavy-handed approach to satisfy my perverse technological fantasy of seeing the HDD platters naked.
>>
>>52551300
save up 10 bucks for a screwdriver set lol
>>
>>52551349
I have the money. Which set do you recommend?

Now seriously, one of my screwdrivers got screwd. I'm looking for a good set of new screwdrivers, if you know any.
>>
>>52543636
Just heat it up until it gets red hot and loses its magnetism
>>
>>52551412
Doesn't its composition include some nasty chemicals? I'd rather not risk it give off some weird poisonous gas.
>>
>>52551474

>>
>>52551368
go to hardware store get a decent set. make sure it has the spinny tops they are a lot faster to use.
>>
>>52551474
no hard drives de-magnitize at like 800c, propane torch is like 2000c. you dont have to melt it just burn it.
>>
>>52543854

>Thinking he actually melts them and doesn't try and recover data
>>
>>52543636
You've got the right idea OP, now smash that other platter.

But dispose of it correctly as I don't want some poor animal to come along and cut itself on the broken glass.
>>
>>52548257

Really? The one I tried to bend shattered with a lot of force and caused some serious wounds to my hands.

I bet you smash glass without safety glasses too. PPE is your friend.

One with Torx bits. I've had this for several years now and its been great for getting into small electronic devices like hard drives and phones.

Guys, the most secure way to dispose of a hard drive is to use full disk encryption from the start. That way, you don't have to bullshit later on, just toss it and you're good.
>>
So, when did metal platters start breaking like compact discs?

Fuck, I actually do something similar with old flash drives. Break each chip into four pieces, each go in a different batch of rubbish, sometimes in public bins.

I'm bored a lot, and like to pretend I'm James Bond.

Sane tier:
Hit it with an axe, smash the platters with a hammer, etc.

Paranoid tier:
5 pass DBAN and the steps above.

Correct tier:
Thermite.

1. Take the drive apart
2. Smash and dispose of the case
3. Burn the platters
4. take the burnt platters and put them in a blender until almost a powder
5. Separate the powder into 4 groups
6. Bury each group of powder in 4 different locations, each at least 2 miles away from each other.
Done your drive and data have been successfully destroyed.
FULL PROOF

The most effective way to dispose of hard disks is degaussing. This requires an absurdly strong magnet. The machines run about 10,000 USD. If it still works a one-pass of zeros is sufficient on any hard drive made since the early 2000s.
>>
>>52553339

The fucking RE magnets inside hard drives are god tier

Just don't get your finger caught in between two of them

To be completely safe
>nuke the hard drive
>use power drill on drive
>microwave drive
>smash drive with hammer and take some of the disc parts and dump that in a separate garbage bag
Hard drive has literally no chance of being anything more than scrap at that point

The likelyhood of the anyone actually recovering data from a broken platter, is slim to none. For anyone to rebuild the platter itself, would take MANY years and even then there would only be only bits of sectors that would be recoverable.

I have worked with HF. I am glad i no longer have to. My dad worked with it and nearly died in a lab accident.

Under no circumstances whatsoever should you ever handle HF without a full set of proper lab gear, in short driving distance to a hospital, with calcium propionate on hand.

I'm no chemist, but it won't effectively dissolve many hard disk platters, just clean them (it might do a number on the vitreous ones?). The steel bucket, however, was a bad idea. You need PTFE plastic, in a fume chamber, because HF fumes will fuck you up and you won't even know about it.

One zero pass with dd, or better still, an ATA Secure Erase Enhanced (because of reallocated sectors) will do the job. Don't dick around with dangerous chemicals.

Objectively the best way to dispose of the HDD is to wipe the encryption key and watch the garbage truck crush it.
