I had no problem going to Cambodia. It's easiest to take a flight, since the roads in from Thailand are shit (they want wealthy air travelers, not poor bus-ins). IIRC the only thing to avoid are weird private 'bus' companies that supposedly take you to scammy fake crossings.
Also, I spent a ton of time getting my Cambodia visa in Thailand because I'd heard it was a problem and they'd try to scam you out of money. Nope. Other people had zero problems at the border crossing. It was a waste of a full day.
The funny thing is that you tell Westerners you're visiting Thailand and they think you're going to fuck ladyboys, or maybe even children. When you tell Thai people that you're going to Cambodia, they think it's because you're going to fuck children.
The Cambodian visa checkpoint had creepy, sun faded posters with children and text beneath saying things like, "do not sexually exploit our children".
The only "problem" I had was that when I left my hostel in the evening to find some food, I kept getting dudes coming buy on their scooters. In Thailand it's super common, they'll honk at you and pester you, offering a ride for money. In Cambodia they did the same thing, but then they swung back around, got real close, and quietly asked things like, "you want woman? No? You want boy?" That was gross.
The Russian couple I met while eating had had no such experience.
My info comes from visiting in late 2009, so it may be out of date.
Incidentally, pick up the book Thailand Confidential. It's eye-opening.
Also, learn numbers, It will help greatly when buying things. IIRC they use the sanskrit terms up to ten, then their own after that. The lower numbers are the same in Thai and Khmer.
I loved staying at Baan Bua in Chiang Rai (not Chiang Mai. Also, Suk 11 in Bangkok.
