Why do students waste their money on macbooks when something like this is more than sufficient for them?

http://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-100s

$199 laptop. Good battery life, solid performance, Good build quality, looks nice.

Because most students get a big student loan and go into maximum good goy mode by splurging on the most expensive laptop they know of because everyone else will have one and they don't want to appear like they're poor.
Bringing a cheap walmart laptop makes you look poor.
>>
>>52537574
11.6 inch screens should be 1920x1080 at minimum.
Not to mention it's probably a disgusting TN panel with awful contrast, color accuracy, and viewing angles.

That is the biggest pile of garbage I've seen all year. Geek Squad agent here, large store here in a college town, and we get one of those things returned about every 2 days. Then, it takes an ENTIRE day for it to get tested by us and reset. All. Fucking. Day.

Because it's a very low quality device and it shows.

You don't need to buy a macbook, but don't stoop to ideapad levels - just becuase you heard /g/ loves Thinkpads doesn't mean everything Lenovo makes is good, in fact for the most part Lenovo is fucking shit, everything but the Thinkpads are terribad worse than HP and they've been cucking Thinkpad owners since IBM sold off their PC division.

Look into a cheaper Dell or even, fundly enough these days, Acer - they've improved a LOT in the last few years.

Because how much or how little you spend is closely tied to the performance of the machine and thusly the user experience with it.

This is exactly why people people who bought sub $500 laptops whine all day that windows is so slow and then decide that enough is enough and shell out ~2K on some macbook and then proclaim how "everything just works"

>>
>>52537753
This is the most retarded things ever. CPU is pretty much one of the least important things in a laptop. Anything past an i3 will be good enough for 99% of people. Screen, battery life, weight, keyboard, trackpad, etc are all much more important than the CPU.
>>
I will say that I got a MacBook because I was dissatisfied with the emulation of it, I have Windows and Linux VMs that work flawlessly on it

Also I work at a help desk and I get a good portion of the Apple calls since most people think they're too good to work on them or something

Most people could do the majority of their work with a cheaper ThinkPad type device

Just buy a Chromebook. My main laptop, a RMBP, isn't allowed to leave the country so I use an Asus CB when I do and it's amazing for how cheap it is. posting fom an 100s now, very happy with it. For the price point everything about it is good, the screen has great angles, though it really needs to be max brightness all the time. It's fast for what powers it, battery is excellent even with heavy use, it's light, keyboard is solid. Memory is not really an issue given what it is used for,

Lenovo being chinese spies and microsof being corporate privacy invasion personified is a worry though. Idk how to deal with suss lenovo activities, but wiping the ms botnet n win 10 is a fucking nightmare and installing linux is troublesome on it because it doesn't use BIOs or something idk.

Fucking awesome device though. Cheap laptop, cheap desktop and a large capacity home server is the future.

Only spec I remember is the 32 gig of storage, aside from core programs I don't store anything on it, I was just lucky I had a spare 64 gig sd card and that has a bit of music and other media, but really the only time I use that is when I'm flying or whatever. Would've been nice if it was a standard SD slot, rather than micro.

I honestly cannot see why anyone would by a high speced laptop anymore, you don't need a beast machine to work on the move, all it does is mae the device bigger and chew more battery.

Personally I've never been a fan of buying used.

I'm still on a sony vaio but I'm surprised that this laptop can almost match the battery life of my sony even though it has 2 batteries (one internal, one docked). Performance should be plenty for me since all I use it for is taking notes at uni and reading my lecture slides, maybe a little music playback too.

Lenovo 100s is $299 aus. I got my sony a few months ago for $270 used, from a friend.

Does the sony perform better? Fuck yes. Will I ever need that extra performance on my laptop? No.

>>52539141
The problem is with compromising on performance you also compromise on everything else, the two tend to go hand in hand (wish it didn't, I'd kill for a lightly specced but ultra-portable, flagship quality piece with a long battery life). I've always bought used because while it's a great feeling owning brand new hardware and having a warranty that will cover up my fuckups, I'd rather have a used high-end product that will probably last for years longer, look better, feel better, and perform better when I need it for running a VM or two or some heavier than average multitasking.
>>
>>52539194
I never said the new one is better.
I just said that it does everything I need it to and has other advantaves, like being smaller and slimmer which makes it more portable.
The sony will easily outperform the lenovo. But the Lenovo 100s is still fast enough for my needs.

They each have their benefits.

Cs student here. Im from poland. I didnt get any loan, actually i dont pay for university either. Anyway, im on 2nd year and im using cheapest i could find acer laptop with celeron n2840. Es1-311. Its more than enough. Besides that laptop has 13 inch screen, 4gb ram and 6 hours battery life. Oh and a ssd drive. I recommend that, and no, nobody says im poor, stupid etc. Noone cares, well maybe in america where kids want to kill parents just because didnt get newest iphone for christmas, but not here.
>>

It's screen is 10x better, and it has twice the battery life.
>>
>>52540919
Yes, but you have X220 power powering a display with 4x the resolution on native scaling and around 7x the resolution with virtual 1680x1050 Hi-DPI mode. It's a disaster for doing anything more than simple web browsing.
If you go the Mac route, you will have to spring for the 15", the 13" is an Air with a fancy screen.

Also the 10 hour battery life quote is for simple web browsing and videos. I use one daily for work and the battery barely lasts 4 hours. If you have a new 9 cell on the X220, it will last 3.5 hours absolutely flat out, 6-7 hours doing work.
>>

This. A lot of people don't realise that the basic models are more than enough for their uses.

Because it's momy's credit card and they look pretty.
Me, I just wanted the closest thing to solid I could buy, I had $1000 store credit thanks to a warranty claim on a toshiba, and the only thing the store had in metal where macbooks.
I used a "premium" laptop for two years, it ran fucking beautifully but the thing was falling apart from day one.
Two years onto my macbook air, it's as solid as it is on day one, and just as fucking annoying in a thousand other areas.
But it's consistent.

For $199 I wouldn't mind, if it had 4GB ram.

It's flash memory so it has a lot of the advantages of an ssd with the read and write speeds of a standard laptop hdd.

Also for note taking and studying 2gb should be enough. Debloated windows 10 uses a tiny bit under 800mb ram on my desktop. I'm sure 1gb is enough to multitask office and a few internet tabs.

>I never saw students using laptops during lectures
>I come from a third world
The above explains why. Had you not been from third world and financially not "poor" you'd buy a laptop for the convenience it allows.
>To take notes during lectures?
Yes, to take notes. It's entirely possible provided you're not a slowpoke keygazer.
>Doesn't seem viable, since there's no enough time to draw all those sketches and diagrams on laptop, so why would you carry it?
Here's some technews for you. Laptops and tablets (Surface line for example) these days offer touchscreen functionality and software for it, such as OneNote, which is awesome. The software is bretty good and you can ditch the keyboard entirely if you wish to write and draw on the screen all the time.
>so why would you carry it?
Having the possibility to access the internet on the go for quick facts lookup, quick document editing, cloud stored books, videos, university websites, quick emailing etc. etc. is very convenient in one device. Granted, laptops still have their inconveniences. which will be eliminated as technology progressed, but they can be overcome and the benefits they provide outweigh any cons laptops/tablet devices have.

You realize that student loans have debt limits,? Going to any school that has 40k a year tutition should be avoid like rat poison. Spending 2k on a hipster memetop increases your chances hitting that limit. If you hate that limit you going to have to get private student loan, those debt collectors will make your bitch.

So can I ask for laptop recommendations in this thread? I have a desktop at home for intensive tasks so I just want a small lightweight laptop that I can take to class, all it will be used for is shitposting, microsoft office, MATLAB, and maybe some Aspen software. I need Windows, so that rules out Chromebooks, I guess. Do they even make cheap netbook style stuff anymore or should I just shell out for an ultrabook? I don't mind doing so, I guess, but it seems kind of unnecessary for my purposes.

Should I get an XPS13, is that still one of the best options? If I do so then is it worth it to upgrade from the cheapest one (i3 4GB RAM) to an i5 8GB model? And I like having a QHD monitor on my desktop, but that's 27" so I question whether upgrading from 1920x1080 to 3200x1800 is really a noticeably worthwhile upgrade on a screen that's only 13".

What else should I consider, Asus ultrabooks? I'm a pretty big fan of their laptops but lately me and everyone I know with an Asus has had problems with the chargers shitting themselves and replacements being unavailable except for questionable shitty off-brand ones.

my whole student life, i used an eee pc 1000he with xubuntu (then later, lubuntu)

it was fucking fantastic

it fit in any bag, it was light, it had 10 hours of battery, it booted in 30 seconds. i took all my notes in notetaking software with built in LaTeX for math. i redirected my university email (outlook) to thunderbird. the keyboard was fucking glorious and the thing was built like a tank

most students have macbooks because they go to university, it's their first time away from home and they haven't yet learned how to manage money. however they also don't know how to pick which laptop to buy, because the majority of laptops are garbage and they know they're safe with a macbook. is that really so bad?
