How long do SSDs last compared to HDDs? One of the main reasons I got an SSD was cause I heard it lasts much longer than a mechanical hard drive. Also, I was originally gonna get the Samsung 850 Evo but got the one in the picture instead, should I regret it?

>hurr durr my ssd is gonna last 15 years!!
ssd's have been around in the consumer market for half that time, and most of them barely make it past 4

>muh samsungs and sandisks are top notch!
crucial MX line and Intel SSD's are the only acceptable options. All else is garbage.

You're welcome.
>>
>>52536146
Yes, the Samsung® is a superior device. But why didn't you buy an Intel® SSD 750, which is an NVMe PCI ssd? You aren't poor are you. I only use the best Intel® products in my computers.

Do you think google might have the answer to your question, OP? Did you read the sticky?
>>
>>52536174
I hope this is b8 and no one here is actually this stupid.
>>
>>52536178
I will admit, I did buy the sandisk cause it was cheaper, and I never really had any problems with sandisk products, so I thought it was fine.

>>52536181
Google always gives me mixed answers.

Cool story bra

Can I hope that my 7yo vaio hard drive will last another 10 years senpais?

Just like the answers you get here. Though the answers on google are much less likely to call you a faggot.
>>
>>52536146
Comparison of longevity only matters in laptops. For desktops, performance matters more.
>>
>>52536146
If you buy a decent Intel or Samsung SSD, it should last long enough, how long depends on how much you write on it. HDDs have a mechanical wear, so it's a bit different there, just make sure you have Backups, no matter if you use a SSD or HDD.
>>
SSD life is about 1-10K writes depending on the quality and type of NAND used.

This is bad news for tiny SSDs and good news for large capacity SSDs.

Based on typical 5k write SSDs you can expect:

~320TB of writes for a 64GB SSD or ~9 years writing 100GB per day

~1,280TB of writes for a 256GB SSD or ~35 years of writing 100GB per day

So unless you use an SSD for a server, even a tiny 64GB will outlive you especially since nobody playing vydias and watching netflix writes 100GB of data a day.
>>
>>52536530
And if you are autistic like me you've only written 4TB to your 256gb SSD in 3 years.
This thing is going to outlive its usefulness.
>>
>>52536578
Got 3.5 TB of writings in a a few months on my 256GB 850 evo.
>>
>>52536628
By few i mean less than 6 months
>>
>>52536530
Pretty much this. It's also why people want to buy 2TB SSDs for servers. The endurance on those fuckers is insane.
>>
>>52536648
What capacity?

About two years.

Oh wait, it's 2016, not 2004. It's fine bro, don't worry about it
>>
>>52536146
On a modern SSD of modest quality (samsung evo or pro/sandisk ultra or pro/crucial mx/intel whatever series) it will likely become obsolete before it dies. For example the sandisk extreme pro has a 10 year warranty and is available in capacities up to 1TB. In 10 years 1TB is going to seem pitiful especially with the rise of higher resolution media.

The average crap SSD will last longer than the average top tier HDD. A crap SSD will last 10-15 years with average usage. With the rate that SSDs are advancing, you'll want to replace it because it's storage is small far before it actually stops working.
>>
>>52536787
That won't stop insufferable neckbeards from whining about how their SSDs don't last for 15 years.
>>
>>52536926
The SSD probably will unless you put it in a server honestly.

Is it a good idea to buy a 120gb SSD and use it for my OS? And have a HDD for everything else?
>>
>>52537183
you won't use all of the 120 gigabytes of the SSD, so you can use it for programs too.
and yes, it is an idea. you have to answer if it is good for you yourself.
>>
>>52537268
Well im just asking because I hear some people bash SSDs and call them shit, and im just making sure im making a good decision by putting my os on the SSD and using my 1tb HDD as my main sorce
>>

How many dicks did you suck today

>>52536146
I got the samsung 850 evo to use as my game drive. With rapid enabled (ram caching) it get's transfer speeds of 2521 read and 1640 write. I recommend it to anyone that wants a 500gb ssd at that price range.

>>52537703
Nah, you'll upgrade before that. In the next 10 years you will probably be able to buy 10TB SSDs for $100 a piece.
>>
>>52536146
I got that same Sandisk drive to revive a shitty old Macbook I had lying around. Now it works a fucking treat, even on El Capitan.
>>
>>52537934
You should install windows 7 on it.
>>
>>52537953
I've thought about it, but I honestly have no need, and don't wanna hog more space than I already have. Plus it's already running Xubuntu as well, which by the way fucking FLIES on this thing, but I only really use it for compiling shit.
>>
>>52537969
To each his own I guess, I never went back to os x after I installed windows 7 on my macbook.
>>
>>52536146
I've had an 840 EVO for 3 years now. Still works fine, no issues. Broke a bit of plastic off the SATA connector though.
>>
>>52536369
the hard drive from a vaio AIO I had in 2007 is still going strong, just believe in it.

OP I bought the same 120gb SSD as you and so far it's fine. It's a not the fastest by any means but does the job for low usage requirements.

Stop comparing SSDs to HDDs in perfect world settings. HDDs in laptops get moved while in use all the time and don't last nearly as long as they're supposed to anyway. Same goes for vibrating HDDs in less than optimal normal cases. If you currently have an SSD and HDD, that current SSD will probably last longer.
