If you want to avoid viruses, stay away from pirated software or really any executable.
If you want to avoid letters from your ISP, stay away from anything released in the last year or so.

As a protocol torrents are great for popular stuff since speeds will be great
They are no so good in old materials /obscure stuff because there are so few seeds out there.
Sure you can fire up a torrent of spectre and be downloading at 10mbytes/sec
or you could be downloading some obscure/old art book and be waiting on that lone seeder on his dial up connection to finish downloading it.

None of these are problems with the BitTorrent protocol They're all just the issues with which files people share. You have the exact same problem with every other mode of file transfer.
The only downside to torrenting is that it requires another person to be actively uploading for you to download, and some would not even consider that a problem.

You can try Transmission-Qt as open source free alternative to uTorrent, or qBittorrent but personally I don't recommend this one (bad personal experience)
