Did people ever call 1920 as 2K? or why don't we call 4K

Did people ever call 1920 as 2K?
or why don't we call 4K as 2160p?
>>
>>52534836
4000 > 2160 and in tech more is better
>>
2560x1440 is "2K"
>>
>>52534836
no and >>52534862
bigger number = more impressive = easier to market
>>
idk
>>
>>52534867
it's more like 2.5k.

1080p is 2k
>>
>>52534862
Then why didn't they market 1080p as 2K then?
>>
Because some marketing guy decided that just calling it 2160p didn't sound as good as 4k.

Annoying inconsistency.

>000
>>
>>52534867
No, 2048x1080 is "2K".

And 4096x2160 is "4K".

It's a digital film standard. TV marketers just aped it.
>>
>>52535040
Any idea why don't we adapt 2048x1080 monitors instead of 1920?
>>
>>52535040
FINALLY
>>
>>52535060
Because back in the 90s they chose 16:9 as the standard for digital video, while the film standard is 1:90:1.
>>
>>52535060
"The 4K standard is not just a resolution, either: It also defines how 4K content is encoded. A DCI 4K stream is compressed using JPEG2000, can have a bitrate of up to 250Mbps, and employs 12-bit 4:4:4 color depth."
http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/174221-no-tv-makers-4k-and-uhd-are-not-the-same-thing

tl;dr
professional systems are for professionals and are defined by more than just resolution, while consumer's get marketed to by companies that dgaf about actual definitions of things.

>or why don't we call 4K as 2160p?
Too many syllables. Harder to market.
>>
>>52535146
lol is that why they are pushing 4K UHD HDR now? or some other bullshit acronyms
>>
>>52534836
It should be 3840x2400. I want my 16:10 back. This HDTV meme has gone too far.
>>
>>52535146
Pretty sure 2K is easier to say than 1080p
>>
>>52535142
I'm sorry that my off the cuff single sentence reply was less accurate than an 18 minute youtube video.
>>
>>52535260
thats why 1080p is call full HD
>>
>>52534836
>>52534862
You guys are idiots.

2K and 4K refer to the width, not height.

>>52535305
Read the question again
>>
>>52535260
marketers change their minds.
>>
Because 4K is a 2x2 1080p panel, making 4 conjoined 1080p panels.
>>
Why isn't 1024x768 considered HD
>>
>>52535834
1366x768 (720p) is "HD"
1920x1080 (1080p) is "full HD" or "FHD"
>>
>>52535874
1280x720 is actually "HD"
>>
>>52535834
HD is just a marketing term to sell televisions.
>>
>>52535257
Once you're not using a traditional small monitor anymore the extra height of 16:10 just isn't worth the extra cost associated with a non-standard aspect ratio. You're almost always better off simply going with a larger/higher resolution 16:9 display.

40" 3840x2160 seems to be the current sweet spot.
>>
>>52535040
This is what I thought it would mean, but apparently it was only a shitty marketing term, I've yet to see a TV or monitor with 4096 horizontal resolution.
>>
>>52535965
A 40 inch monitor is fucking ridiculous. Either you're sitting so far back that it might as well be smaller and closer, or you have to crane your neck around to see the whole thing.
>>
>>52535965
But muh golden ratio.
>>
>>52535874
>768 (720p)

HMMMM
>>
>>52536033
Sony BVMX300

I hope you've got deep pockets.
>>
>>52534836
2048x2048 VR micro displays are "2K"
>>
>>52534949
They marketed it as full-hd. Also I think 2160p (twenty one sixty) takes longer to say then 1080p (ten eighty) that could be it.
>>
>>52535131

>JPEG2000

I always thought that standard was kill
>>
>>52536279
DCI's been around for a while
>>
>>52536046
>A 40 inch monitor is fucking ridiculous
Its really not. Its slightly less wide than a pair of 1080p 23" monitors side by side, and about the same height as one of those same monitors turned vertically. Its perfectly comfortable at normal viewing distances and there's no more turning or craning of your head than with a dual or triple monitor setup.
>>
>>52536102
>has 3 fans on the back
>>
>>52534836
because "4k" just sells stuff faster.
>>
Why would 1920x1080 be considered 2K? 4K contains four times as many pixels as 1920x1080.
>>
>>52534836
so 1080p is 2k?
>>
>>52536102
>3G-SDI Dual-link for 1920 x 1080/50p 60p, 4:4:4 at 12/10 bit
>12/10 bit
>12

Daiz wasn't ahead of his time in pushing 10 bit anime after all, this beast already supports 12 bit.

Whoops. Thx
>>
Muhketing.
>>
>>52534836
>>52534867
>>52534891
>>52535040
2560x1440 is what people consider 2k but since it's not technically true it enrages autists.

>>52534836
>why don't we call 4k as 2160p?

Actually, OP, if you weren't busy sucking cocks you would've found out that YouTube already does that!
>>
we should multiply the two numbers and say the pixel count

>480 thousand

>2 million

>8 milliom

99% of consumers don't even have any SDI-anything in the first place, which is why you always see HDMI on everything
