Is it okay not to have a real time anti-virus scanner installed and instead just do regular scans with a standalone anti-virus tool?
I'm really getting tired of installed anti-virus acting more like a virus itself than the cure.
Install Common Sense: Current Year edition
Even my wife's son survives without an antivirus, and he visits some sketchy sites.

If you are not a complete retard, you can get by with Common Sense(tm) and Microsoft Essentials
use MSE. works bretty well but donesn't bother you at all (and unlikely to be botnet, since MS would just do it through Windows itself. All other antiviruses are probably botnet though, and they sell the data about history, habits etc).
And then run manual MBAM scans every couple of two months, or when you have a scare.
