Unity has a bigger community, so you're likely to find more documentation and resources for it than UE4, which only became easily-accessible somewhat recently.
It's not likely that any indi will come close to pushing the limits of either engine, so don't worry about it, either one can do anything you'd want to do with them.

i'd wait for vulkan to come out and just develop on it with a team of some kind. unity and ue4 have nothing on vulkan combined with bullet, opensubdiv, ptex, openvdb and yebis.

Cryengine :^)

Just use OpenGL

Vulkan doesn't matter unless you already know exactly why you would prefer it over OpenGL. It's not like OpenGL is going to be phased out desu

This is why your parents hate you, anon.

Unity will apply Vulcan when it comes. If he learns unity then he will automatically get to use Vulcan when it comes without any hassle. Unity is also easy to convert to mobile Phones, Windows, Linux and whatever,

they're both really different

if you're new, which you are, unity

Between those two I would with Unreal Engine. But i would prefer the quake 3 engine, wich can be found here: http://ioquake3.org/

depends on your design, but generally

unity < unreal < your own engine

obviously making your own engine is an undertaking, but it's probably gonna have to happen sooner or later. if your ideas aren't cookie-cutter shit you're inevitably going to hit ceilings with any given middleware engine. use libraries obviously, don't try and go totally from the ground up.

vulkan isn't really that different from modern opengl from a game development standpoint. i'm hyped for it because i'm into low-level graphics programming but it ultimately comes down to a lot of the same stuff. also incorporating vulkan into unity isn't going to help it much because it's still gonna be over-abstracted, lowest-common-denominator code in a managed runtime

vulkan isn't a game engine
