just fine since I don't have to carry around 30 things to plug into my chinkpad and it has bluetooth and wifi that work. usb C -> USB 3 adapter was $5 on amazon.

Honestly, just get the one in the pic, with the 1080p display. Almost no ultrabook/Mac will give you dedicated touchpad buttons, so you're SOL.

Buy it from Microsoft store, get the edu discount, and have fun. Something wrong with it, return it. Simple as fuck.

>>52527137
even this, it has 2 usb ports, no ethernet, and you are done, had in my hands a 3rd gen touch, it looked good, but a surface 3 looked even better, for battery life, despite how blocky it is, the elitebook 2540p with an I7 and 6gb (2 soldered) of ram, and with the biggest battery option wich is triangular, even rises the bottom a little and its not a fuckin oven, here is a pic i found, that thing with maximum power saving could be long enough, and compact enough.
>>
>>52527206
I know that the large battery is fat and screws up the laptop shape, but the fact that you can have the huge ass battery and a regular one and carry those with you and exchange them whenever you want it's a plus.

I don't care for paper thin ultrabooks at all, they look kinda cool but I would rather have the swappable battery.
>>
>>52527299
never saw if there is an option like this in the x240, the biggest battery is the internal one, the other one its think as a mousepad.

because of the new lid bezels it's fatter.

Sometimes I think Lenovo is trying really hard to fuck up the thinkpads. I mean, like they have a team of engineers in a room brainstorming bad ideas to use on every new thinkpad line.
>>
>>52527659
how's the LCD ghosting treating you?

to answer OP thread, the latitude e7440 is pretty much the last good ultrabook that is fully serviceable aside from the CPU. even has LTE in the touch screen models.
>>
>>52527591
>>52527679
most of the xps i repaired has issues with the lvds cables, every single one i checked it has screen tears among or just going black when you move the hinges.
thats because of shitty factory tracing of the cable, sometimes the cable who goes to the webcam its bad traced, so it push the lcd panel and make drop splashes on the screen, wich eventually leave a mark, and then, taking that screen out and put it back again, thats gonna leave a mark, no matter how good you are, or how new are your scrap tools, you are fucked, and the laptop is fucked too.
>>
>>52522742
Because every fucking ultrabook needs to be a flat piece of shit that sacrifices both construction quality/ruggedness and performance just so you can have a flat pancake device.
Just go for a 2010 era latitude or thinkpad. Might not be great on the graphical end, but the rest goes well.
>>

I think the best "normal" laptops right now are Dell's XPS line. Light, durable and nice battery life.

I got a Surface Pro 4 for myself though. I literally went paperless overnight, this thing is so good. Looks great, very functional and battery is sufficient for my schedule. Definitely recommend.
>>
>>52528260
How's the surface pro working for normal typing?
>>
>>52528294
I actually really like the keyboard. It's one of the better chicklet keyboards I've used, better than the XPS. The touchpad is very slippery(glass) but the gestures work well and scrolling is very smooth in M$ applications and decently smooth in everything else. Clicking by pressing touchpad is pretty loud though. It makes a deep, loud CLICK.

I have a wireless mouse and keyboard I use when I'm at home but I don't mind using the Surface keyboard for a couple of hours.

Might as well post here.

I'm deciding between two XPS 13s.

One has Intel HD graphics 5500 and is about 150 cheaper.

The other has Intel 520 graphics.
All other specs are the same.

Is the better graphics card worth the upgrade? Or is the difference between cards insignificant?

The Skylake chips make a high pitched noise when in low power state. I have the same issue with my SP4 but you only can hear it if you put your ear against the vents.

I tried disabling C-States and it still has a lot of high pitched noises - especially when connected to a power supply. Unfortunately I don't even have to get close to the notebook to hear it :/

I hate the design. Backlit chiclet keyboard, no buttons on the touchpad, very poor performance, and very poor connectivity. And OS X is utter garbage.

You could install Linux, but a lot of the firmware configuration requires OS X. You cannot update the firmware if you run Linux. And the retards at the Genius Bar will probably refuse to help you with hardware problems if you run Linux.

Asus is still better than most. Of all the trends Apple started, the shit keyboards are the worst, followed closely by the thinness boner.
>>
>>52528780
I'd put it the other way around. The shitty keyboards only apply to laptops. And even then I usually use an external keyboard. The thinness boner applies everywhere. It applies to laptops, mobile devices, and even fucking DESKTOPS (i.e. NUCs).
>>
>>52522742

I have a Dell E7440, and it's not remotely "fucking garbage". Pretty reliable machine, has problems with heating, but it's OK, I love it.

>no buttons on the touchpad

Why is this a big deal for you? Is there some type of benefit from this?

Idk about the us but here in aus they're actually a good deal compared to windows alternatives.

Hp spectre x360. It's got at i7 in it and all aluminum body. Under a grand

I've been supremely satisfied with my asus ux305fa
>>

I've never seen any retail outlet anywhere in aus that has a mac for under a thousand, the base model air is still $1399. For that money you could get a ux305 or something that actually has decent specs.

The 5500 has an older generation CPU so you'd get slightly less performance and worse battery life.

The 520 one has the new Skylake CPUs which are typically more efficient meaning it's probably more powerful and uses less battery power than the equivalent previous generation.

Basically the price difference is in performance and battery life. If you want better performance and battery life, get the one with the 520 GPU.

If all you do is basic web browsing, get the i3 version.

because they are trying to be a macbook pro

At least it's not the gaming alienware meme

Asus has the UX305 and it has a 940M

>13.3 inch
>dual-core CPU
>up to 16GB RAM
>940M option
>around $1000

did you not even try looking?

If you wanted a quad-core, that's a different story.
>>
>>52539964

pretty much this, but the macbook pro isn't all that super powerful now. You can get a Xeon CPU if you wanted to on the mobile workstations.

as far as I know:
-they went to Broadwell (from Haswell),
-they've changed the keyboard to chiclet type,
-the cover doesn't feel plastic now (it feels a bit like leather, but it's not leather)
-it can have discrete nvidia 840M graphics card
-the cooling really shit, our helpdesk always has problems with this (E7440s are generally fine though)
-only comes with an SSD

I've seen people with E7450s, and everyone has some problem with it. I believe with time Dell manages to work on these things, and make it stable enough.
