I did for a while, because MPC was having a wierd issue with audio cutting out, and I was in a pinch, so I gave it a whirl. It works fairly well, but I like MPC better, because it can navigate tot he next file in the directory.
I like mpv as well, but I don't think it can do that. If it does, I haven't found it.

Don't get defensive. Just stop using VLC since it's bad for obvious reasons. MPV and MPlayerX are two good alternatives for OS X that don't waste time "Caching fonts" when you want to watch anime.
