Was it worth the wait for ANYBODY?
>>
Just wait for next gen OP.

Just wait for next gen's next gen OP.

I was building a new desktop after only having a laptop, so going skylake made perfect sense.
If I was considering upgrading a desktop from sandy bridge or better, I wouldn't bother.

I considered an offer on eBay with a 2011 lga 1366 motherboard and a xeon 6/12 @ 3.33ghz for a total around 220$. It gets ram support up to 24gb ddr3 too

It defeats any skylake i5 and the cpu+mobo combo costs less than only the cpu from skylake
>>
no should have bought a xeon.

Don't think so, I saw the disappointment coming months in advance, but it turned out even worse:
>barely any improvement over Haswell
>early troubles with SLI not working
>CPU bends under pressure
>flat out crashes when crunching big numbers

It's only because AMD is in such a bind right now that Intel could have released this travesty and kept a straight face on. Honestly, I really hope Zen puts some heat under their asses, or the future is going to look bleak.

Should I upgrade from my i5-2500 to the i7-6700?
>>
Just wait bro, Zen and Kabuto Lake and Skynet and Cum Drum Sally Scum will change EVERYTHING. We're talking three or four hundred times the quadra-processing power and at least fifty thousand times the mega-RAM interstellar hyperthreading.
>>
>>52515236
No, wait for broadwell-e
>>
>>52515184
It is ridiculous, a 6 core xeon w3670 (32nm 1st Gen) @ 3.33ghz costs 100$ while a 6 core xeon e5-1650 (32nm 2nd Gen) @ 3.5ghz costs 300+$

Why is the 1st Gen core architecture so goddamn cheap?
>>
>>52515262

It's for my gayman pc, don't do much else with it besides game and shitpost on 4chan. I think that's too much for this
>>
>>52515335
then keep the 2500
>>
>>52515353
pretty much this. For games you don't need a fast CPU, while for productivity X99 can be had for not much more than Z170, but you get 50% more cores. The 6700K doesn't really make sense in either role.
>>
should I upgrade from my i7 950 to an i5 6600k?
>>
>>52515309
Inferior stepping, dodgy bins, potentially second hand (probably not), TDP issues, heatspreader not affixed perfectly, higher incidents of defects or failure from particular model, finicky about RAM compatibility, temperature diodes inaccurate/broken.

I don't know. One of those things or more.
>>
No.

I built a AMD FX8320 -based PC a few years ago, excepting to completely skip the current "Core" generation. I expected Intel's next "tick" to be sometime early this year.

In the end, Intel's rehashing the same thing again and again mostly. The next "tick" won't happen before late 2017 or so now and we're having a series of "tock" in a row.

I'll be upgrading to Skylake this year, still. I need more raw core performance in my CPU now than before. Likely a i5-6600k.

I'm conflicted about going the Skylake route, though, but my AMD FX is showing its limits even if I had fun using 'make' with all its cores. I can't really wait for AMD Zen later this year either (and I expect it to only match Intel's offering at best when it comes to single core operations, not surpass it).

its shilled super hard at r/buildapc
It must be good

Probably. That shits gonna die soon.

>Wait until 2017 for 2011 equivalent performance

Flawless AMD logic.
>>
>only 5% faster
>so get haswell that was only 5% faster than ivy
>>
>>52515436
>heatspreader not affixed perfectly, higher incidents of defects or failure, finicky about RAM compatibility

Westmere is from January 2010
Sandybridge is from January 2011

There's not much difference between both of these, one is 5 years old, the other is 4 years old. TDP is the same if you conpare xeons. Ram compatibility is the same ddr3 sticks as always (westmere with triple channel could have more ram than sandy). Even core duos had ddr3 ram. Everything is the same, sandy is around 20% faster but thats it. Why does westmere cost 3 to 4 times LESS
>>
>>52515436
Since these are second hand, wouldn't it be safe to say that all the faulty chips have already been weeded out?
>>
>>52514932
The last time I had a PC was a really long time ago when I got a rig with a Pentium 4. I survived on a laptop until Christmas, when I bought myself a Skylake rig. Fastest thing I've ever laid my hands on.

That was the release date of the first chips with said architecture. Naturally xeons and xeon based i7s came about one year later than trash consumer grade chips

I upgrade to a 6700k from a 965 black. So yeah, it was a good upgrade for me. Was gonna just get the 6600k, but they had one 6700k left, it was 100 bucks more then the 6600k and came with Just Cause 3 which I was gonna buy anyway, so...
