LG G5:

>full metal chassis
>5,6" screen
>slide-out removable battery
>microSD slot
>power buttons on the side, power button remains on the back
>>
That's quite interesting, OP.

Question: I've heard there's a new version of 810, which doesn't throttle. Is that true? Which phones have it?
>>
>>52511552
It might be a tad better, but the chip is still crippled. It's probably underclocked to hell on the software side as well, so it doesn't overheat in general use so the average consumer doesn't notice. But it doesn't perform during heavy use. Avoid if you can.

whatever you say, kid
>>
>>52512049

It makes sense due to the rapid change in technology and short lifespan of phones, where people would be willing to pay an arm and a leg every year or two for a better version of what they had before.
>>
>>52511688
Kirin 930 is a little underpowered, but it's okay if you don't do intensive gaming on your phone. Kirin 950 on the other hand is a beast. No custom ROMs for either, though.

Snapdragon 808 is regarded as the safe go-to chip of last year.

Exynos 7420 is great, but no custom ROMs.

MediaTeks are crap, but the new Helio X20 is great. No custom ROMs.

Snapdragon 820 devices are about to go on sale so I'd definitely wait for those.
>>
>>52512214
Never woken it up in my pocket. Snapchat did that though.

>>52512390
>MediaTeks are crap
I disagree, they're good (for low-mid end)
>>
>>52512390
What would one consider intensive gaming?
I'm only interested in emulating PSX and PSP.
Can I make a custom ROM myself if I know how to program and stuff?
Where can I find info on custom ROMs?
>>
>>52512349
I really don't like the power button on the back meme, but the slide-out battery is really innovative. I've always thought that a metal chassis is no excuse not to have a removable battery. I hope Samsung gets some real competition out of this.
>>
>>52512468
I would count PSX and PSP as intensive gaming, but I have no idea how powerful those two devices are. I would google it.

For all things related to custom ROMs you should look into XDA forums. I'd start with searching for a "compiling AOSP" guide. All processors that aren't Snapdragons don't have their sources released so getting an AOSP based custom ROM working prefectly on one is nigh impossible, but you could look into making customised stock ROMs.
>>
>>52512466
>MediaTeks are crap
>I disagree, they're good (for low-mid end)

I haven't gotten into MediaTeks that much so you probably know better. At least a lot of low-tier phones have them, maybe for good reason.

Hey /smg/. I have about $600 to spend on my next smart phone. I'm on Verizon's carrier.

What's the good shit to get, and what's the absolute shit to avoid?
>>
>>52511460
Looks great. Might upgrade for I'm G3.
Where are the volume buttons? I don't see it in OP pic.
>>
>>52512609
Volume buttons are on the left, the power button is still on the back.
>>
>>52512544
What do you mean by processor sources?
Thanks. So only Snapdragons get custom ROMs?
>>
>>52512468
>Can I make a custom ROM myself if I know how to program and stuff?
Assuming there's a way to flash the system partion, you can make modded stock roms sort of even is you don't have an unlocked bootloader with recovery. Anyways, it's quite a lot of work.

But once you are on rooted stock and start changing the system you're doing the same things a custom rom would.

>>52512564
They're great for the price IMO, but they aren't really for enthusiasts I suppose.

>>52512628
Not him but the SoCs requires "drivers" and modified kernels(?). Without the sources for those it's hard to get another android version to work.
>>
>>52512627
I thought the button on the left was the power button.
>>52512544
>XDA forums
Man fuck their XDA labs app. I can't download anything from it.
>>
>>52512628
>What do you mean by processor sources?
Good documentation of how the processor works, released to the masses (developers). With anything other than a Snapdragon you're going in blind. You may get a ROM to boot but it's impossible to make it bug-free, since you don't know what the fuck you should be doing.

>So only Snapdragons get custom ROMs?
AOSP based, yes, basically. There may be stock based custom ROMs but the changes are going to be very minor (like circle battery, clock in center, etc.)
>>
>>52512675
>But once you are on rooted stock and start changing the system you're doing the same things a custom rom would.
So everything custom roms allow is achievable just by having root? Then what's the point of custom ROMs?
>>
>>52512720
So if I'm interested in AOSP, my only option now seems 808 or waiting for 820.

What does AOSP-based ROMs give versus stock-based ROMs? As I understand, the difference is that AOSP ROMs have customized kernel, correct? Is that like beneficial for battery life or something?
>>
>>52512765
maybe with ROMs you can have someone else to do the work for you
>>
>>52512765
Well, a custom stock rom with stock kernel, I think so. A stock based rom is basically a rooted stock, with mods and a custom kernel. You could do that yourself, but it much less work to flash one of course.

but of course you can't mod your stock into AOSP roms and other android versions for example, that's another category of roms.
>>
>>52512843
What work, besides removing bloatware?
>>52512889
Then how does AOSP differ from stock-based ROM, besides being built from free source?
>>
>>52512817
>>52512919
>What does AOSP-based ROMs give versus stock-based ROMs
Completely vanilla android, Less "bloat" and features, for those who hate sammy/LG skins for example. Generally they have the latest android versions. Different system apps, like the camera(generally significantly worse than stock), dialer, sms app...

Then there's AOSP based roms ( like paranoid android) that for example, that add lots of other features and mods.

>the difference is that AOSP ROMs have customized kernel, correct? Is that like beneficial for battery life or something?
Lots stock roms have that too, with lots of under/overclock options for example.

>>52512919
>What work, besides removing bloatware?
General mods, like a custom battery indicator or other colors in the stock apps for example. Including (semi) custom software. Or a custom kernel included. Just look at the feature list of a rom.

I'd say it's bad. Not distinguishable (to most people I guess). The phone will be running in 1080p most of the time anyways. Good for VR, but very expensive and too demanding for games and such anyways. I'd rather have 1440p or even 1080p

The G4 is looking good. How much longer do you think it'll be supported for (software-wise)?
>>

Oneplus One. The phones the other guy listed pale in comparison to it. The battery life is among the best there, and this is literally THE CyanogenMod device.
>>
>>52513942
Well it varies quite greatly, LG flagships are often 450, while samsung, apple and now sony can be 700+

I'd say flagships is not where WP shines though.

>>52514017
I agree, I wouldn't buy the g5. Metal body is merely an atheistic thing, it's a practical disadvantage. It's the cancer that is killing smartphones. At least the batter is still removable though, proving that other manufacturers are simply fucking with you.
>>
>>52514017
>How much longer do you think it'll be supported for (software-wise)?
maybe a year after the g5 launch or a little longer, officially. (But somewhat slowly of course)

Roms should support it for a couple of years more I'd think.

These days android version doesn't matter that much though.

>>
>>52514207
>I'd say flagships is not where WP shines though.
You're probably right, I hear the lower end phones run very well too.

I chose the 950 in the hopes that it'll be an actually good, usable phone compared to others on the market in 4 years time, and still be able to run the various apps I might want by then. And apparently Microsoft is pretty committed to getting WP10 on their older (3+ years) models, which makes WP seem like a rather promising choice to me.

I expect this thing to last, not to require an upgrade within 1-2 years because official support gets dropped as soon as the next model is out.
Also, it takes pretty good pictures, so that's a bonus.

>>
>>52514455
If it wasn't for the size, I would have.
The normal 950 is already close to too hugelarge.
>>
>>52513994
They're actually different resolutions. True 4k is 4096x2160, but that's not a standard 16:9 aspect ratio. What you're looking for is either UHD or 2160p for the 3840x2160 resolution. Similarly, 2k is 2048x1080 versus 1920x1080.

Quit being a fag.

the charging port flap is annoying. i avoided the z5 compact due to power button placement, heat issues and worse battery life, due to the snapdragon 810.

>>
>>52514418
Yeah, it'll last you. WP doesn't take advantage of high end specs and you'd be fine with a mid end one for 2 years too.

Anyways, software support is far from everything. Very outdated android versions have much more functionality and apps.

My g4 thoughts after 2 months that I haven't found in any reviews:

Auto brightness is way to dark, and no way to change that in stock like on sammy phones. In fact there isn't that many settings compared to samsung.
Even the best lcds are way inferior to AMOLED in viewing angles, saturation and blacks.
The stills are amazing but the videos aren't that great.
It comes with an OK screen protector.
The plastic back cover doesn't look so good and is slippery.

It can't have that many apps open, it doesn't seem to take full advantage of the 3gb. or maybe some apps reset themselves (skype). Don't know which.

I'm using my phone to USB Tether. It pretty much does that full time.

Anyhow, it seems to be very...shoddy. After plugging it in, opening the "network and sharing center", that window is very slow to respond, as is the adapter config window.

I had issues with the connection being very spurt-y, but turning off ipv6 for the adapter seems to have corrected that.

Are there any optimizations I can do with the phone or the USB drivers that I can do?

In what sense? As I said, disabling IPv6 solved an issue I was seeing. Specifically that connectivity seemed to be dead for several seconds at a time, and then would burst. Something I tried because doing a ping would resolve google.com to an IPv6.

Anyhow, I suppose it doesn't matter which I use, wifi or USB. Just wondering if properly configured it might offer better behave differently, since my LTE becomes pretty shit between 8p-12a, and is otherwise pretty useful outside of that window.
