What's your GPU history /g/ and what's your favourite of all time? What will your next GPU be?

My history is obviously pic related (not including non-gaming or SoC iGPU/APU GPUs).

My favourite has to be the EVGA GTX 680 Classified 4GB. Was such a monster in the day, physically and in terms of performance. Was pretty chuffed when I got it for $400, but saddened to have let it go since it was too big for my mini-ITX case back then. Still, I sold it for $600 so made a healthy proifit.

I'm looking forward to the Pascal GTX X80. Should be breddy gud, if it lives up to the hype
>>
something (didnt even know the word GPU back then)
something else
integrated intel laptop crap with whopping 350 MB vram, could run LoL at 25 fps
A10 5800k, pretty decent
looking forward to Pascal, Polaris or Zen, whetever comes first and has better performance/price

VooDoo2

W/e Radeon card was in 2002. Think it was the 7000 or 9000 series. Maybe it was 2001. Was after 9/11 I remember that.

Nvidia 6th > 7 > 8800 Ultra for years.

Back to the red team with the AMD 5800

Currently on a GTX 970 after the 390x had terrible driver support.
>>
>>52506227
Well, it's a hobby for some people I guess, others might use the same system for 6+ years and then just replace it whole.

Anyways, I forgot the exact models but it went like so:
Some 4MB video card in my P2 266Mhz system late '97.
GeForce 3
GeForce 4
Radeon 2600
Radeon 5750
I might build a new system with a 980 Ti in it, should be enough for anything at 1440p.
>>
Geforce 4
Sapphire Radeon x1650 pro
Asus GTX 285

Now i'm not sure what to change it for or if i even need it. Gigajew's 980 or 390x maybe. Or good ol 3.5 vram meme. Shit's expensive here, behind the iron curtain.

Best: R9 290. Sold Tri x because the warranty finish and change to Vapor x. Overkill for 1080. Run fine at 3200x1800.

Worst: 8600gt. Same performance with 7600gt with way less price. Cant even run game at max on 1280x1024.

Favourite: 7300gs. Big difference when oc'ed compared with stock.

I was offered a straight swap to the GTX 980. I studied all the benchmarks and the GTX 980 was a better performer at the time. Plus I never used more than 3GB of VRAM at 1080p anyway.

Out of all the cards I think i like the current R9 390X best. It was a mad deal and the performance is superb, though I'd like even higher framerates at 1440p using ultra settings.

I like the EN9600GT too, gave that away to another person because it was too old for my use even though I remember that card specifically for working over its capacity often and never giving me trouble. The 7870 too is a solid card that delivers for little money.

I have a rather fucked up GPU history......favorite was definitely the 8800 Ultra

At least once in your life you should go extreme with a build, preferably if you're anticipating a major game release.

I can't even remember what I built my Ultra rig for, but I loved that thing, can't believe I sold it to a friend now that I think about it. It had a P45 DFI mobo, Wolfdale Xeon OC'd to the max with a Thermalright (the cool black version) and hidden UV lights in a windowed Lian Li Mid-ATX case.

Damn I just want to buy a broken Ultra and use it as a coaster, that thing was so badass. I remember showing my friends Crysis and blowing their fucking minds, the best we'd graphics we'd seen was Gears of War. I singlehandedly converted them after letting them play it.

6200LE was with store bought shitbox, bought the 7600GT as an upgrade and then the 7950GT because I wanted to waste money. GTX 260 kept crashing and hard locking my system (had to disconnect from mains before it would work again) so I got my first Radeon as Nvidia had no good cards out at the time. Dude at work offered me the 7970 at a bargain price but it was soon RMA'ed due to a faulty fan and replaced with the R9 280X.

Aside from all of the CPU GPU's from old, old systems when I got hand-me-downs as a kid (or that one prebuilt I got when I was 17)...

Nvidia GeForce GTX220 or 240 (I've since forgotten which. Either way I only got it for a HDMI port to use and it served me well in that.)
AMD HD6670 (sent wrongly) which was then corrected for the HD6770 (First self built computer, cheaped out because I was poor and didn't know better)
AMD HD7950 (got this when FC3 came out, the poor 6770 only got 20fps while driving so I knew I had to upgrade)
AMD Fury X (got this in the first UK sales batch due to pre-ordering within the first day of orders. Revision 2 pump, no issues at all.)

7950 was fucking GOAT. In fact, I'd still be using it if it wasn't for the fact I got a proper monitor and wanted to get use of the whole 2560x1440~144hz & freesync. My 7950 withstood 2560x1440 when I kept it to sensible graphics options and could even reach 60fps when doing so, but the fact I was missing out on Freesync and higher tier graphics options was enough to push me forward.

Looking forward to Polaris, if it turns out well I might even see about selling the Fury X for its successor, since I'd be benefiting from the extra HBM2 memory, reduced energy usage (which doesn't bother me in itself, but would be damn nice) and improved tech inside of it.
IF the Polaris 'Fury X' doesn't improve all too much on the current gen version, I'll just keep what I got for another year or two.

Well we're expecting the node shrink to be across the WHOLE range, on AMD's side if not Nvidia's too.
This will improve efficiency, the improved designs will be a good thing for you and you're already on what is essentially a low/mid tier card as it is.
There's literally NO benefit compared to just waiting for a little longer.

If you were on a Radeon HD6770 or 480, I'd have said sure, but no, not on a 950.
>>
>>52508253
I'm extremely new to PC and i just built my first one a few weeks ago, so most of this is a bit confusing
>>
>>52508337
Well that settles it; definitely DO NOT UPGRADE RIGHT NOW. Put into laymans terms, I'm telling you this:
The next generation of graphics cards are going to be using processes of manufacture that shrink the size of the transistors inside. The more transistors you have inside, the more powerful something is when compared to another thing with the same design aside from that one variable.
So going from 28nm to 14 or 16nm will bring a HUGE difference to the next generation of graphics cards, which are due to be released any time around Q2 or Q3 of this year.

The difference between a 950 and 980ti for example might be quite a jump, but for the money you have just spent - and the money you would spend again, it is NOT worthwhile.
The difference we expect to see from a 950 to 1050 even should be quite impressive.
It should use less electric while being more powerful and have better compatibility with future technology.
It will last longer and have longer support before drivers are eventually dropped from it.

Something like the 1070 or even 1080 will have a LOT more power in them as long as Nvidia doesn't sit on the exact same design as they're on right now.

IT IS NOT IN YOUR BEST INTERESTS TO UPGRADE SO SOON, NOT TO THE SAME GENERATION OF GPU'S.
900 is a generation. 1000 is a generation.
The 900's all use the same technology, bar some small differences.
The 1000's will all use the same technology, bar some small differences.

Don't throw your money away needlessly and then regret it once you smarten up about these matters.

I know a lot of people here scream WAIT FOR X a lot, but in this case, it really is a time to wait for x.

EVGA 9600GSO 512
EVGA 560ti 1GB
EVGA 750ti 2GB
Asus 980 reference 4GB

As you can see i always double my VRAM on upgrade, so i have to wait until there is a GPU that bests the 980 and has 8GB VRAM.

My favorite was the 750ti because the tiny TDP let me run jt passively.

Voodoo something or other
9800 Pro
8600GTS
GTX 960
Next will be mid-high end Pascal

The 960 is kind of a placeholder for the last year to catch up on older games
>>

I don't understand why people upgrade so often. It's not like you even need that much power for gayming. My 7870 stil serves me fine.
>>
>>52509873
You don't even need a GPU for vidya. Why bother wasting your money on a HD 7870?

Intel GMA 900
Geforce FX 5700 LE
ATI 5670
Geforce 560ti 448 cores
Nvidia GTX 980

Didn't regret any of them, minus the first being a prebuilt emachines piece of shit. My favorite is definitely the GTX 980, closely followed by 560. That 560ti lasted for a little over 4 years, and still works today. Just needed to be able to max the new stuff out.

Hopefully the 1080 comes out sometime in the next 12 months so I can buy nvidia again like a good goy and sell these 970 meme cards to some random tech illiterate gamer for a decent price. If nvidia fucks up HBM I don't mind getting AMD though. Not getting SLI again, too many drawbacks and frustrations compared to a single card.
>>
>>52510753
Yea, I doubt I'll do SLI again either. I was under the impression that the drivers themselves were able to adapt SLI to anything, but it seems like it is something the game developers have to account for themselves.

And developers are lazy so that shit never works properly.

For my main computer, throw in a handful of low-medium end AGP (Geforce 4MX, 7600Gs) and PCI-E (Low end AMD 5450s) cards i have used for media PCs and old PCI cards used on servers.

Definitely liked the Geforce 6800s best, it was during the top of my tweaking and overclocking and when i gamed the most so many good memories from that time.

Also have a pair of Voodoo 2 cards with SLI cables laying around that i have been meaning to use for a retro gaming box for a while, just never get to actually doing anything with it.

Other than a whole bunch of mobile GPUs between 1999 and 2006, here are the GPUs which i purchased directly

- 8400 GS (For a single slot card, This thing was quite a space heater)
- HD 7750 (Really don't know why i bought the 2GB DDR3 version instead of the GDDR5 version)
- R9 280 (For a $210 card, this thing overclocks like no one's business and impressively handles more than you'd expect it to. The 750W PSU i got is overkill though)

Now, do i go ahead and get a 390X or wait for Pascal... i've never been a strict AMDrone and could probably jump back on the Nvidia bandwagon if the product is convincing enough

Oh right I forgot. Honestly I'd probably have to say my favorite card where I noticed a huge difference was the 6870 sapphire.
Man. What a card that was.
I thought the 285 was good because I could run crysis at around 40-50 at medium-high settings. The 6870 blew that away and then some. Honestly that card was the beginning of the modern age of graphics cards where 60fps on full resolution just became the norm. Where no one thought twice about it.
Before then you really had to think about your goals, what you wanted to achieve, and what you were willing to sacrifice. Even with a massive budget.

2005: 6600GT. Solid starter card, and played everything I wanted to (Doom 3, Half Life 2, WoW) without issue. I think I upgraded it since there was a few games giving me issues that came out around 2006.

2006: MSI 7800GT. Good card as well, but I don't remember the performance upgrade being too big.

2008 or 2009: I think I picked up a EVGA 8800gt or a 9800gt at circuit city when I did my new build. Whichever it was, it was a decent card, lasted me awhile. Fan sadly gave out on it and it was time for a upgrade anyway.

2011: Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 6850. Decided to try out a AMD/ATI card. Was OK, had some issues with my new monitor and had some issues with some of the games I played, but wasn't absolutely terrible. Eventually upgraded after getting tired of the monitor issue.

2012: EVGA GTX 570. My longest running card, thing was a goddamn beast. Even in 2015 it was playing a lot of shit on a mix of very high and high and did damn well.

2015: MSI GTX 970. Was not my first choice for my new build, but I wanted to go ahead and get it built and I had a car issue come up that I sunk half my graphic card money into. Honestly a good card and ran everything on 1080p extremely well, 3.5 only really came up as a issue with GTAV and even that ran well regardless. Sold it back in December.

2016: ASUS/ZOTAC 980 ti. First card I bought that was in the 600 range. I originally got a ASUS 980 ti, but I accidentally bought the version that was more or less the stock 980 ti with shitty overclocking abilities and did not realize it. Returned it and got a ZOTAC AMP! Extreme. Shit is marvelous. Depending on how Pascal turns out for performance boost over the 980ti, I will either sell this and get a Pascal card and eventually SLI it, or just SLI the 980ti if the performance gains are minor.
