If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

help me, /g/, i'm stumped.

i have to decide between an x220 and an x230 right now. the main differences are:
- x220 has fingerprint reader, x230 has camera. i don't need either, but i sure as fuck won't ever use the fingerprint reader while i MIGHT use the camera.
- x230 supports 1600mhz ram with higher data throughput, x220 only 1333mhz (although the wiki says it does 1600, which imho is wrong since the cpus can't make use of it)
- x230 has the new keyboard, which means keyboard backlight, not only the top light. i like that and make use of it, but it wouldn't be a deal breaker not having it
- x230 has two usb 3.0 ports, the x220 has none
- x220 in question comes with bigger battery than x230 in question

i will be running linux either way. can i have some opinions on why choosing one over the other?
thanks in advance.

X220, what the hell are you gonna use USB 3.0 for? Get an expresscard slot and a standalone web cam if you need those features.

You won't even notice RAM speed. If you like better keyboards then get the X220 m8.

x201 was too small, has the lower resolution screen, and a few dead pixels. I prefer the size of the 420 way better and the 1600x900 panel was worth the upgrade alone.

They will be usable. I'm on a T410 and don't see a reason to upgrade since I have a desktop computer as well.

The more of a dinosaur laptop it looks, the cheaper it will become. Knowing that recent series are slimmer and macbook-like you can then see why the don't drop in price.
>>
>>52507796
Actually, the newer **40 series dropped the hardest in price since hardly any wants to buy them used. Not sure what's in store with the **50 series yet, since they have the trackpoint buttons again.
>>
>>52507738
reasons?

>>52507762
i don't have an absolute need for neither camera nor usb3.0. it's more of an aesthetics/autism issue with the camera: i hate having the fucking fingerprint reader that i'm never ever going to use, while there is at least a slim chance i might use the camera for something. usb3.0 simply because it's 2016 now and it's simply a nice to have.
as for the ram, it's also a bit of an autism issue: why not get slightly better, potentially longer lasting hardware if it doesn't make a difference otherwise.

it seems to all boil down to this: how much worse does the keyboard actually feel? i know how nice the x220's is, i typed on it few weeks ago. is the island style that bad? keep in mind the island has backlighting and a slightly neater arrangement.
>>
>>52507796
>I have a desktop computer as well.
I dont, so I need power and portability. And thanks to that fucking stupid 16:9 shit, I cant stay with 12", as I used too, so I need to get a 14" "ultrabook". And design wise, they are all shit anyways. Anything newer than the 61-series with their fuckhuge bezels sucks. At least from the bezel sizes, the T440s is a step in the right direction.
>>
>>52507840
a 40 would be a decent choice as you'll get it cheap and then put the 50 trackpad in.
>>
>>52507865
It is said the the new keyboard isn't bad at all, it has plenty key travel but the layout sucks. You could live with that and I myself prefer the thinklight.

If you saw the post I made in reply to your last post, I found two Attributes keys within the path you listed in the registry. I figured setting those Attributes values to 0 would make the "Processor Idle Disable" option appear in the advanced power settings in the control panel, since I don't have that option currently.
However, I couldn't get it to appear.
Specifically which Attributes key do I set to 0? After trying setting the two I found to zero and seeing seeing no results, I searched for more keys within the same directory. I found a bunch more, but they didn't seem like they had anything to do with idling.
How can I get that option in the control panel settings to appear?

Okay, it wasn't a registry problem, it was just that I changed the power plan from Energy Saving to Balanced. Is it normal for idle temps to be literally in the upper 60s on Balanced? Only when I switch back to Energy Saving do my temps return to the 40-50 range.
What plan is everyone with X220s using and what are your temps?

Also, I found the correct Attributes key in the registry that enables the power settings option that supposedly gets rid of coil whine, so there's that. Just have to test it now.

both times lenovo sweatshop workers completely fucked up putting the case back together, like clips and shit not even seated and bulging seams. if you do have to use warranty expect to have to rebuild the laptop when you get it back. that said the service is good, 1-2 days they pick it up from your house/work and takes less than a week to return it "fixed".

I have turbo boost disabled also. You're talking about Lenovo's turbo boost that you can toggle in the built in power manager, correct?
Would repasting the CPU actually make that big of a difference?

Actually, what's weird now is that I switched Balanced back on and it's idling at normal temps, 44 C right now.

Problems with power saving (dpms) and multi monitor are some examples, very immature mesa driver (at least it was pretty bad october-december). I had to compile linux-next from october 2015 to the day kernel 4.4 came out for everything to at least work. BIOS support was similarly bad - I could run the igpu with 64MB of memory allocated and set to 1866mhz. A BIOS update from december allowed me to allocate 512MB and at the same time set my memory to its actual XMP speed of 2666mhz without corrupting the graphics output. Now it's fine with linux 4.4 and the latest version of mesa.

All I wanted was to put this mSATA SSD into this x220. I want through the whole fuckin process of dismantling the entire fucking thing to get to the buried top-secret mSATA slot deep within the wires and components and then the last pivotal screw was fuckin worn down by the previous owner and unable to be removed.

Now I've got to take this to a repair shop to see if he can assist with the task.

It was so easy putting an mSATA SSD into my Ideapad Y580. But it's another level of bullshit with the Thinkpad x220. Plus I prolly fried something or other through static.

8gb of ddr3 is about £30 used, but as ddr4 is taking over ddr3 prices will rise so it's worth getting it now, but an SSD would have more of an affect, and don't go T400 as it's getting a little long in the tooth just as core 2 duos are showing their age.

I don't understand what discrete shit would contribute to either of those. HD3000 (Sandy) machines and later have outstanding perf/wattage for what they cost now. If anything, space-heater GPUs would just make reliability far worse.

Not a ThinkPad, but I have a Dell Latitude E6410 with a first gen i5 and 4GB of RAM. I put a 750 GB HDD in it, and dual boot Windows 10 and Arch LInux (Though Windows 10 boot is not working right now).

I need this laptop to last another 2-3 years, which is when I plan on upgrading. My question is this, would it be worth it to upgrade the RAM to 8GB, or should I just stay on 4GB for the remainder of it's lifetime. I hardly ever use Wndows, I usually just stay in Linux for the majority of the time. I don't do any intensive gaming, usually just Half-Life source. I had a friend who used an older ThinkPad with Ubuntu with only 2GB of RAM, and it seemed to work fine.

I know 4GB is low, but I don't want to drop an extra $50-$100 if I don't have to.

Is the T420 good for web development/design? I will also be doing digital art on the side.

I also see a lot of different ones on eBay and Amazon; some come with 128GB SSD, others with 250/320GB HD, others with a 1366*768 screen, others with a 1600*900 screen. How do you value these laptops?
>>
>>52519197
Any laptop is a good laptop for web design. The only real consideration should be a half-decent screen.
>>
>>52519292
What would you consider to be half-decent? I've always had a pretty big monitor on my main computers so I have no idea if 768 would be good for my needs.
>>
>>52519320
thinkpads have awful screens and 768 is tiny compared to any modern computer let alone having things side by side or room for tools.
>>
>>52519320
The most important thing is that you're able to get a feel for what people on various resolutions would see when they visit your website. I absolutely wouldn't consider a 1366x768 display, but I don't think it would prevent you from getting the job done. Digital art needs a bit of clarification though. Are you just drawing?
>>
>>52519364
In that case, what would you recommend? People mentioned Chromebooks as well elsewhere but I am still unsure. I don't want to spend a fortune on a MBP at the moment but need a laptop.

>>52519381

>>52516849
I really considered doing that, but since if you change the color of the lining and clit, then you'll have to change the dot in the thinkpad logo, including the one that has a light.
>>

You can replace the thinkpad screens with better ones. I've got a 1920x1200 panel in my t60p.

I'm looking for a laptop for uni. Performance isn't a concern because I have a desktop, but I would like good portability, durability and battery life. I'd prefer to stay under ¥30,000 ($300). Would going thinkpad here be the right choice? Any particular models you could recommend?

I'm not a big fan of smaller screen sizes and compact keyboards, because I'm planning to study CS, and would probably be typing (programming) a lot as a result. On a similar note, these all come with Japanese keyboards, would it be difficult to transplant an EN-US layout keyboard?

I plan on hooking a 1080p monitor and adding an extra 8GB of RAM for ~$40, as well as an extra HDD and a 9cell memory somewhere in the next 6 months.

What do you think?

Open it up and see whats inside!

Aternatively, one of the numbers on its bottom should also telly ou what exactly it is.

>T430
I heard (but I havent used one myself) that the *30 series is shit. *40 is supposed to be a big improvement in built quality (and another step down in the input department) and *50 are finally sane and good laptops again, save for the weird, non-standard keyboard layout.
but as said, this is just from hearsay! Anyone can confirm?

Why the hell this shit is called HD+, i will never understand. That's at maximum LR- or SD, but not HD. for me, that would be a deal breaker. "FullHD" is the absolute minimum I would pay money for, unless the screen is smaller than 10", and for bigger than 20", I wont go below 4K.

But besides all that, it probably is powerfull enough for anything you would want to do on a laptop, for a few years to come.

That's an amazing deal. Take it.

Well, I watched a lot of reviews and been reading many opinions and potential issues the T430 might have and the only notable problem I could find is the occasional fan noise issue (which seems to have been fixed with a later BIOS update). But right now I have a shitty noise factory HP DV7 with an overheating problem which sits at 70C in idle with 3 extra fans placed right under the CPU and GPU (!!!), so I wouldn't even mind if it had that problem.

1600x900 is more than enough for me. I plan on using it as a workstation for programming, occasional video rendering and playing oldies, so I don't mind.

If newer thinkpads use eDP the. You could possibly fit a 4k panel but 1600x900 is good enough as even 1080p at 14 inches you'll need some scaling.

So that would be the prime reason for a high res screen. much easier on the eyes, but yes, it certainly is workable. Could be worse. Could be a 15" 720p "HD" screen from Mediamarkt…

Then let me put it this way. I can't afford anything over $300-350 right now and I'm in dire need of a laptop for work. 1600x900 had my old laptop as well (17) and it was alright for programming, display-wise.

Mate get the laptop as that should be going for $150 more than that price.

Cool. What number exactly?

The bios doesn't even list the graphics card.
ThinkVantage detected it as Nvidia Quadro

It also suggested that the bios and integrated camera need updates... Shoud I do it? Can the ThinkVantage bios update screw something up or is it foolproof.

Thanks a bunch!

Also check the sticker/config I guess which you then put into the lenovo support site for full specs. It's in the form of XXXX-YYY where X is all numbers and Y can be letters and numbers
E.g. 4298-X02
Though as a guess, the T510s had NVS5100m

As for BIOS update, personally I don't touch things unless they're broken but it's up to you

System Update usually wants to push all the other lenovo shit on you. Pick and choose what you want/need

Anon who bought an X200 with a nine-cell here.

/sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/energy_full_design = 93240 [mWh]
/sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/energy_full = 90150 [mWh]

Battery lottery has been won.

I bought X61s with Win XP and the scroll button doesn't work even though it should as it's refurb. Is here any way to fix it? Like download driver for that.

Yea, I didn't mess with the BIOS after all.
It's among the weaker T510's according to the link from the OP (thinkwiki.org)
i5 2.4Ghz, NVS3100m, 1600x900, 4 gigs RAM... Which is enough for me since I'm not gonna use it for gaming.
I am going to transplant an SSD into it (Samsung Pro 840), should provide a good boost.

What memepad should I buy for <$200?

I need for basic schoolwork/internet browsing.

Can someone give me a short explaination about why Thinkpads are so good? I'm thinking about buying a laptop to play csgo mostly and anything else. Is there any reason why i should consider Thinkpads?
