I have to ask you guys a question that not a lot of you are going to be able to answer.
What happened to the internet?
Seriously. I know change is good and everything, but as changes to internet speeds keep going up, the internet is becoming more and more shittier every day. Sometimes changes aren't a good thing. The internet used to be a place where you could express yourself. A place where you could feel free and roam the endless cyberspace and make your own little corner on the web, and people wold actually take time out of their day to come look at your neat little page. Everyone was apart of a community back then.
But as time went on, people started abandoning that concept. People were more interested in social networks than they were on their pages.
People don't even read the Terms of Service agreements or the EULA's of the websites they sign up for anymore. They just sign up for the services immediately without knowing anything that could harm them in their agreement.
News websites don't even consider other websites anymore, just the fact that they consider Facebook and Twitter as "the whole internet" saddens me.
How can we change it back to what it used to be?

I used to relish every chance I got to dial into AOL and look at stuff before dear ol Mom would tell me she needed to make a phone call. Today, everyone is on the internet all the time including stupid people that don't even know how to read, type, or think. The influx of mobile users has had pros and cons. Remember how they used to tell you not to reveal anything about yourself, well now kids who aren't even of age do it and 24/7. Telling people to lurk moar can only do so much, and I believe I'll trailed off somewhere. I understand the irony of this seeing that everyone including kids deserve the right to free information, makin the assumption that they don't take advantage of it is well.. presumptuous. There are some very bright kids on the net today, despite all the idiots

Originally for transferring documents with fancy text and links to other documents, the web has developed into an anything goes thing where we stream video and audio, play games, communicate using text, voice and video, transfer files, access local services, do office work and programming... There are attempts to build whole operating systems from javascript to run in browser.
You can view a web page by curling it. A web browser is needed to render the file correctly. And then you have developers who treat an XML renderer as an opertaing system, trying to replace actual systems with javascript. The web has lost it's way.
Not to mention that serving global audiences at the current scales using a centralized protocol is expensive. You need to decentralize using cdns and regional caching.
You wouldn't run hot_lesbian_action.mp4.exe, why are you running scripts served from google-analytics.com? The web has developed into a robust software distribution system. All you need to do is to insert a script on your site and your visitors will run it. This is what has allowed datamining, outside of proper wiretapping, to develop. At this point, you're all running software that requests software from servers and executes it on it's own.
The profits are too big, it's never going to go back.

the internet was better in the mid-late 90s and early 2000s, when sites were lightweight and people still had homepages with actual content instead of a facebook/twitter profile. also, news outlets these days just produce clickbait articles to maximize ad revenue.
around the year 2000 cable and dsl was becoming more common, meaning that browsing the web was fast unlike on 56k. now it feels slow even with a fiber optic connection, because every site loads 10 megabytes of jquery to animate a button, and 100 different analytics tools and trackers, not to mention that since I started using firefox in 2004, it has grown incredibly bloated over the years.

Before you continue reading what I'm about to say is completely opinionated which means I might be horribly wrong about some things. With that out of the way.
The internet pre-2000's was more of a useful tool than a need. It gave one information, pornography, and provided one with a means of fast and easy text-based communication. That was all people needed then, not much else.
Now with the World Wide Web being a massive and powerful space where almost anything is possible people have created their own needs based on it. Shallow satisfaction from getting likes and upvotes, the need for acceptance. The average human, referred to as "normies", have created for themselves a need for social approval based on virtual likes. For this the normie will give up personal data and post pictures all over the place for the satisfaction of getting a like on instagram or an upvote on Reddit. They don't really care much about the consequences of doing so because most don't know the consequences of doing so and would likely not care if someone attempted to educate them. The internet then is shaped by these new needs. This is a cycle that would permanently alter the internet for the rest of its existence until either the sun wipes us out or we war ourselves into extinction.
TLDR: nope sorry we can't change it. Normies fucked it up and it will stay that way
Reading your posts anons brings me back to the mid 90s... and I miss that time. I did Just set up an old BBS system. When we started every 100kb of a file matter... today you have MBs of Jscript and css on simple websites.
