SSD's, except they already are

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't this—without the external power supply—be excellent if used as a swap disk?

you may as well just put the ram in your system.

Volatile memory; no good. Even if it wasn't the case, it'd still be limited to PCI-E bandwidth restrictions.
DDR4 RAMDisk proper however, is something some people (as in, companies) benefit from.
This would be useless.

That wasn't snakeoil, for those that needed all the performance they could get at the time and could afford to pay for it (e.g. high-end databases). Texas Memory Systems, for example. It cost an absolute shitload of money, however. I don't think there's a niche for it in modern times.

>>52494707
You might as well just add more RAM, because that's what it is.

Do you not that you could have a "drive" on ram for decades now. Sure, it's more easily done on Linux -almost all distros even use this by default for some small corner of the filesystem- but even Windows was able to do this with the right software for a long while now.

It never took off, because not persistent storage is not persistent, it does not suit most types of storage.

Do you also not realize that connecting that same RAM through PCI or such a shit thing will be much slower than the usual way of connecting RAM?

At the time when these came out, it was a PCI-e 1.0/1.1 world, and lots of devices were PCI or PCI-X. The 1x slot is a bottleneck by todays standards, but I recall these being DDR based, and for their time and specific applications, they were fast as hell.

But now they'd be slow.

I don't get it, why not just make it a PCIe x16 card to draw enough power to run that instead of an external power supply?

I don't think PCI-e one is going to be too much of a bottleneck for it, it's still going to max out it's transfer rates
>>
>>52498530
That's by design, it's basically a super fast SSD.
>>
Couldn't you RAID 0 5 of the NVME SSDs and get relatively similar transfer speeds to RAM?
>>
>>52494634
We use those at work in our ZFS NASes.

The point is that DDR wears out a lot less than flash memory
>>
>>52498850
Well ya, not sure how much that much RAM would cost compared to the SSDs
>>
>>52498725
>I don't think PCI-e one is going to be too much of a bottleneck for it, it's still going to max out it's transfer rates
PCIe x1 is 250/500/1000 MB/s for gen 1/2/3.
Current NVMe SSDs are more than 2000MB/s.
RAM is faster than SSDs.
>>
>>52498958
Also that appears to be DDR RAM no? That thing would only be a few GBs anyways, why does that thing exist?
>>
>>52499040
It exists because ~7 years ago we didn't have affordable SSDs or SATA3 or m.2.
>>
>>52499040
It exists because SSDs weren't a thing then, and some people needed data storage with fast random access other than the main system memory (which would lose its contents over a reboot, even a soft one).

But even the bare minimum DDR200 is still 1600MB/s, so the bus would still be a bottleneck.
>>
>>52494707
DDR drives are actually slower than SSDs now.
It's the interface. They're really old.
>>
>>52494756
in some shit tier computers it is actually not 100% snake oil.
although if you are writing enough data to make it overheat I think you may have a problem
