So is an amp mandatory for the Superlux HD668bs, or just preferred? What would happen if I just plugged them into a phone or computer headphone connector?

the shp9500 is a decent buy though (not even the first guy that said it). alternatives are the akg k612, but youd almost definitely need an amp. or the hd558, but its $20 over your budget. you decide

Same guy, SHP9500s are £99.80 ($142.23) and the HD558s are £119.99 ($171.00). Are these prices reasonable for the quality they provide bearing in mind shit can be expensive here.
>>
>>52494278
Holy shit, those are both overpriced by like double.

I'm sorry, man.
>>
>>52494278
the hd558 are what you want to aim to get, but the shp9500 are very good if you have to stay below $100. id say k612 also, but they almost certainly need an amp which youd end up spending much more than either of these on.

I got very mild tinnitus listening to music for about 3-4 hrs a day. Your ear gets used to whatever volume you listen at and over time, it escalates and causes damage even though it doesn't 'seem' loud. Also, taking breaks is good. Just my 2 cents

By using some Nwavguy's formulas along with some other formulas I got on headfi, I calculated that the volume coming out of my K702 when the knob of the Fiio E10K is at level 3 on low gain without bass boost is approximately 77,9 dB, which should be safe listening level. Now I know that this value isn't probably very accurate, because it can vary according to the tracks and other factors, but can anyone here confirm that the Fiio E10K voltage output is around 1.65 V? On Headroom they say that it's 7.39 Vp-p, but honestly I find it too high...

It is actually really easy to do. Audiologists test hearing aids all the time with a cheap coupler called a 2cc coupler. You can make one yourself with a small mic and some tubing, although 2cc is not an accurate tool.

>For wireless in-ears, these look pretty nice.
Goldenears has a bass boosted target for in-ears. Jaybird is bassier than that target, and LG HBS-900 fits it more closely.

>And these wireless in-ears must sounds like fucking ass.
Not the first time Beats would have used DSP to fuck the sound out in ways that are impossible to do by mechanical means alone. They did it with the original Studio Beats as well.

Just got the ATE and the ZS1. Not really impressed with either of them. They are very bassy and have little to no highs. The ATE sounded like they were coming from far away and lost some sound as result. The ZS1 have heavy bass but barely any high making them nigger tier. I would stick to other brands and not cheapout on IEMs.

He's right. I liked my pair of the them but they have a serious defect. The cord deteriorates after a while. This is a known problem and they have not fixed it. So if you buy it you can only use it for a year or two before it just breaks. Also they are very expensive for what they are.

I have already a pair a audioengine a5+ for a couple years. Would it be worth "upgrading" to the JBL LSR305s - is the difference noticeable? My current setup is very simple: o2+odac analog output > a5+

I don't know what I would need in addition to what I have now to get an LSR305 setup working proper. I would try to sell the a5+, so that money would be available to buy additional components. I also have an old Yamaha CA410 I could use.

Just received the HE-400i and it's basically a worse LCD-2. The 400i does have slightly more treble, though it's a worse quality treble, and it has way more bite. Never realized how polite the LCD-2 sounded before.

K702 isn't on my list because I'm a pleb who values bass and really good, palpable low-range, not tonal neutrality. I'm not looking to mix tracks.

Honestly, I've only had closed headphones and I'm moving to my own place without roommates here pretty soon, so I want to experience the vast soundstage open headphones offer. is the AKG K550 ok for my first pair of "good" headphones
like do they need an amp or dac or something or can i just plug them into my pc and have them work
>>
>>52505255
I own a pair. Work well with anything, but I noticed a huge difference when using them on my moto g to my iPod Touch 6
The iPod Touch drives them up to louder volumes and sound better at higher volumes, so you should consider investing on a dedicated player or upgrade to a phone with a good DAC. It will be a one time investment and will work with any consumer grade headphones you decide to get in the future. A portable amp is fine too if you want.
I heard Samsung, Apple and HTC (not sure about this last one) have pretty good built in DACs
But overall the 550's are great for a first pair of headphones. They also work great with videogames and movies because of the spacious sound they create.

Both K7XX, HD600 and 400i are fairly neutral headphones, X2 is V-shaped and it has less tight and less extended bass than the others. 400i has the most neutral bass among the headphones you mentioned, then it's maybe what you're looking for. You should also consider HD650 (bassier version of HD600), as well as the DT880 250 or 600 ohm (neutral but with a very good bass) and K612 (slight extra bass over the K7XX and it's generally cheaper, but its cable isn't detachable). Both K7XX and HD600 suffer of sub-bass roll-off, but it's still not as bad as X2 sub-bass roll-off.
As for the comparison between K7XX and K702, they're basically the same headphones but the K7XX has a little bass boost. However I find the bass in my K702 definitely punchy and enjoyable for every music genre I listen to, besides being really tight and detailed.
> instruments separation
This largely depends on the sound quality of the tracks you're listening to (obviously you can't expect the same instruments' separation from a mono recording of Bo Diddley and a stereo recording of Donald Fagen), but it's also due to the neutrality of the headphone (generally more neutral = better instruments separation). If you like more bass on your headphone it's ok, but be sure that it's tight, otherwise it's going to overshadow the mids and you're going to miss a lot of details (this is how the X2 bass sounded to me, which is the reason why I returned them back and I got a K702).
>>
>>52505664

>If you like more bass on your headphone it's ok, but be sure that it's tight, otherwise it's going to overshadow the mids and you're going to miss a lot of details (this is how the X2 bass sounded to me, which is the reason why I returned them back and I got a K702).

That is my ultimate goal. Tight, but healthy bass. I'm probably going to order the K7xx and see where it goes.

Props on the Fagen reference. Steely Dan songs are the tracks I usually fire up when first testing out my headphones/speakers. Namely "Babylon Sisters", among others. God damn, I love Fagen tracks

K702 Annie are made in Austria, but from what I know they're much more difficult to find and they're more expensive than the K7XX. If you can find them for the same price, good for you.
> Donald Fagen, Steely Dan
I also play their songs whenever I want to test new headphones/speakers. They pretty much defined the refined melodic jazz rock and their works still stand as the primary examples of HQ recordings in my mind.

>>52505740
>>52505751
You may be disappointed with AKG stuff if your goal is bass. I love my K702 but it's not basshead stuff. Maybe I'm reading too much into what you want though.

>>52505891
Like most everything that's under $500. Even the stuff over $500 is mostly just assembled outside of China. Stuff that's actually made not in China is the very small minority.

Pretty much only Grado and some other very high end headphones actually assemble and have their parts made outside of China.
>>
>>52505891
They've been produced in China for some time. I once read the post of one guy on headfi who claimed that the austrian K702 sounded different from the chinese K702 to him because he said that the chinese K702 didn't have angled earpads. I don't know, there shouldn't be a sound difference between the two models. The chinese K702 doesn't have the bumps under the headband, then they're generally considered more comfortable.
Most tech products are made in China now and China doesn't stand as poor quality production anymore.

Newfriend here, my dt 770 broke. Starting to get seriously interested in the mdr 7506; apparently it's a bestseller on amazon and I've read that a lot of studio/radio professionals like Howard Stern and such use them.

Does anyone know how they would compare to the dt 770, and the K550 and M50x for example? I'm doing doing work in speech editing and transcription, play computer games minimally, and just listen to music moderately now.

E10 is not E10K.
Why are you caring about the the output with a load that is not your headphone?
7.39 peak-peak means the voltage level. To convert into Vrms like a normal person, divide through by sqrt(8). That gives you about 2.6 Volts RMS.
To get the voltage into your load, you want to make sure that the current output is not an additional limiting factor as well, which it shouldn't be for loads greater than 32 ohms.

Tinyman screwed up his formulas as well, which they comment on in that thread.
>Actual Voltage (volts) = Max Output Voltage (volts) * (volume level fraction)^2*
This assumes a linear potentiometer/volume control, when audio controls are normally built to be logarithmic. In calculating, this means that the volume control is already in decibel form.
>parabolic rate
>When you push up on your volume, you actually don't increase in a linear, straight manner
Again, it's generally logarithmic/exponential, even I though I can think of specific counterexamples. He misunderstands and confuses the concept of exponentials and RMS(square root).

Ok thanks. Is there a way I can calculate the approximate output volume in dB out of my headphones then? I know that a dB meter would be the best thing, but I have no clue as how I could get one (I tried many apps for my phone but they were all screwed).

>dt 770 broke
I usually hear people getting positive feedback from beyer customer service for repairs. Should be free with warranty if not then it's affordable.
>interested in the morning 7506
Get them.
They're worth it, no questions asked.

What operating system? Or are you looking for a device just to play music with?

>morning
Damn this auto corrector

would be a downgrade unless you want neutral sound
dt770 is pretty bass heavy
very large downgrade compared to k550

Reading your post further, I think they'd suit you well as you need neutral sound for professional audio work like music editing and such
