Twitter is safer. Egyptian political dissidents on twitter don't get caught. But egyptian telegram users get caught and jailed. Telegram likely cooperates with totalitarian states to jail their users. Or Telegram is easy to crack for totalitarian states.

Telegram is very nice and has a lot of cool features WhatsApp doesn’t. But the default communication mode is plaintext and its crypto is dubious apparently.
The secure alternative, Signal, is really damn lacking in features.

She even tried to hide her status from me which was hell. ALSO to make matters worse I knew who the guy who. Someone she just considered a "friend" but you know shit happened.

Remember to smile while you say all this to her.
>>
>>52491752
It can't at least ask you before importing your co-workers and family members to your contacts list?

I like how Telegram shills use privacy as a feature and then defend shit like this. What is so special about this messenger that makes people want to shill it so hard?

Telegram has no encrypted group chats, only for one-on-one chats. It has weak cryptography, and no proper identity verification.

Just use Signal. With proper identity verification and ephemeral end-to-end encryption, Google's got nothing on you.
>>
>>52492306
The problem with signal is that everything else about it is shit.

It's less reliable. The servers are down at least 3 times a day. Messages arrive late or never.

But even if they get the reliability of whatsapp, normal people don't give a flying fuck about it, so what's the point of a messager if you have no contacts.

File transfers are indeed not (yet) possible. On the other hand, unlike Telegram, Signal supports encrypted VoIP calls (which in all fairness needs some improving).

Yes it does.

Another thing nice about Telegram are the channels and bots. Signal is just too barebones and not ambitious enough. If Signal could replicate all of Telegrams functions, that would be nice.

> Enable Signal as default SMS

Oh look: it's another Telegram shill thread, courtesy of Pavel Durov's PR department. (You could at least use a different OP image.) Pasta time:

tl;dr: Telegram sucks. For a phone messenger, today, use Signal instead.

- Telegram doesn't even encrypt most things: https://twitter.com/tqbf/status/678065993587945472
- Telegram's MTProto 'secret chat' encryption is complete shit: https://twitter.com/matthew_d_green/status/582245625103826944

Signal is a competently-designed, open-source (client AND server), end-to-end IND-CCA2 forward-secure phone messenger. Even Snowden recommends it: https://twitter.com/snowden/status/661313394906161152

Yes, Signal is imperfect. Here are the negatives:
- It requires a phone. Not uncommon with phone messengers, but a pity for all those who'd like to finally kill, say, Skype.
- Signal can't protect communication metadata. That is an open research problem: Ricochet & Tor Messenger are best current solutions, but neither protect against global passive attackers (i.e. NSA) or are very good for phone batteries.
- Signal requires Google Cloud Messaging to wakelock phones on message delivery (but not FOR message delivery) - unfortunately GCM is the only reliable supported wakelock on Android 6.x+. [There is a nogapps Websockets fork - https://github.com/xmikos/fdroiddata - but that will drain your battery: that's the price you pay for no wakelocks.]
- They took out the encrypted SMS transport: because iPhones could not also support it (programmatic SMS disallowed by Apple).
- Signal has a desktop client, but that's a Google Chrome app that syncs to your phone. It works, but is far from ideal.

But it is the best we have right now.

The rest of this thread will, if history is any guide, probably be used to argue over the status of different desktop messengers, or userbases. Some cypherpunks are reaching for perfection here - but open research problems take time to solve. Until then, at least use something that doesn't suck.
>>
>>52493350
Also
> Disable mobile data and WiFi, send a test message to someone with Signal
> It doesn't send
It doesn't fall back to SMS? There doesn't seem to be an option to force sending as SMS to a contact that has Signal.
>>
>>52493274
I'll agree that Signal could be much more if they also implemented more features. However, all those features I can live without because security outweighs it for me, by far. I'll agree that Telegram has some nice features, but so does WhatsApp, yet both real suck because they consistently implement pseudo security.

Take WhatsApp, it sends its media messages in plain text, but only advertises the fairly good encryption of normal text message. I said fairly good because without rolling your own keys and validating other people's public keys, it's not how encryption is supposed to be done, certainly not end-to-end encryption.

And Telegram still rolls their own cryptography while there's really no need for that at all. We have enough good cryptographic protocols and cipher suites already, but for some reason they wanted to design their own cryptography, which has been proven weak already.
>>
>>52493434
Oh, long press the send button, I got it.
>>
Another problem: once you start sending SMS with Signal, you can't use SMS Backup and Restore to back the newly sent SMS up it seems. That's a pity and turns me off using it for SMS if I can’t move them to a new phone, or save them for a factory reset.
>>
>>52490870
>bot
which bot please? can't find the one you're talking about
>>
>>52493519
I use Titanium Backup to backup my applications. When you backup Signal using Titanium, it backs up your settings, messages, but also your private key that has been generated during installation. So when you migrate to a new phone, you don't need to bother people with them needing to verify your new public key.
>>
> No one uses Telegram
> So use Signal
Literally only 1 contact using it, how am I going to convince WhatsApp groups to switch to this

>>52494314
