I just use a banana pi and a couple 2tb hard drives. If you do something like this dont buy external hard drives that draw power from the computer, get ones that plug into the wall.

I just put ubuntu server and plex on a box, threw in some 3TB nas drives. I made some VMs that run daemons to download some shows, and a twitch stream too.

You don't really need much for plex if your devices can do direct play, but transcoding can be more taxing.

odroid with a 2TB usb drive.

Around $120 bucks, it runs minidlna and flexget. I stream to my Chromecast with bubbleupnp. Typical poorfag cable cutter setup.
