Why is IBM not receiving the fame it deserves?
>>

Their logo hasn't been touched since the 80s and they haven't made a product I've even heard of since the 90s

Fuck, never saw it coming.
>>
>>52491440
That's because they don't give a fuck about consumer products anymore. That's not their business. They provide technological solutions to modern problems. For example they are in charge of a project in Stockholm that tracks cars entering and leaving the city centre and charges according to what time the vehicle comes in and out. What it did was reduce congestion and encourage co-workers to carpool to work rather than each take their own car. There's more of a "stagger" too so people who can afford to be at work a bit later than regular 8am or whatever come in at 10 and so on..

That's the gist of it anyway and one example out of hundreds. It's just what I remember from reading about it in an article years ago.

Tl;Dr IBM are focused on industrial scale tech solutions and R&D.

They're flooding money into research hoping they land on something big. They dropped the consumer and business industry minus some specialized servers and consulting.
They're trying to get around Moore's law and to emulate the human brain in a processor. Probably all meme tier attempts at concepts that still need decades.

Nice meme though.
>>
>>52492808
If they were actually pivoting the company they'd be done with it already as they've been in decline for a very long time already.

As it stands right now IBM is just a slowly dying dinosaur propped up by their reputation up until the 1980's. Once the baby boomers who grew up and were already working when IBM was still great retire and people who can see IBM as it is without nostalgia take over buying decisions, they're pretty much fucked.

Right. All I'm saying is it doesn't matter what gender, race, ethnicity etc. works for a company, AS LONG AS they are GOOD at their job RELATIVE to their work peers. That's all I'm trying to say. Some people here don't get that. However, I do hate the whole "we need more diversity in X industry."

Not that guy, but I'm going to give you some advice: It's no use trying to tell people like him to go back to /pol/ as he's not even sure to be from /pol/ to begin with. We used to tell them to piss of back to /pol/ back in 2012 already, but they've since then became an everyday part of /g/ culture.

If you don't like them, then go someplace else because no matter how much you complain about them, they won't go anywhere. They didn't go anywhere when the original pre 2012 community told them to piss off and they won't go anywhere when the new reddit-based community tells them the same thing.

That's way too shallow of an analysis. They're rooted deep in specialized enterprise services, mainframes, lab equipment, and other niche markets for now. They're not doing well but we'll see if their research is more than just PR eventually
>>
nothing wrong with indians.

besides, they're qt.
>>
>>52493117
That's the point: They're not being hired because they're actually any good at their job, they're being hired because they're dirt cheap and for no other reason (except maybe the fact that they speak english, which is why so many companies are hiring indians and not Chinese).

If they were being paid just as much as their western colleagues, they wouldn't be hiring them to begin with.

>>
>>52493193
Think about all the research they could have done with 100 billion dollars.

Just let it sink in.
>>
>>52493158
The thing about the kind of research old tech giants like IBM and HP does is that most of it never finds any large scale real world applications and the same thing goes for university research.

As I said, they're a dinosaur riding their past reputation and most of the nice stuff you mention has it's base in stuff sold in the 1980's and earlier. Niche products like that can never support a tech giant like IBM as a giant like that needs to have a larger revenue stream than any set of niche products can muster.

If IBM was an animal, it would be a Brachiosaurus in the midst of the period when all dinosaurs went extinct out due to climate change ether caused by a meteor or volcanic activity.

I hear about IBM daily?

>>52491546
This. Corporate infrastructure and integration work is dominated by IBM. Any heavy lifting in the backend is dominated by IBM's InfoSphere suite. It's not great, but it's still pretty good, and the support and compatibility smashes the competition.

My only complaint about IBM is that they shill their stuff so hard. The only docs around IBM you can actually take at face value are those not written by IBM. AIX is a nice OS though, if you can get used to the little differences when working in ksh. Their tools are incredibly powerful, but really expensive. But the consultancy I work for is even more expensive so it's not really a problem.

>tl;Dr IBMs enterprise offering is cool and powerful, but 99% of people will never touch it unless they're handling serious data at huge scales, and they have huge budgets.
>>
>>52493298
Not so sure that IBM's research can be compared exactly to the fruitless theoretical garbage that academia churns

Don't forget IBM is a corporat and it doesn't just admit it's going down and do so without squirming and gasping every inch of the way. I think their research (working around thermal limitations of processors, creating a processor that emulates the human brain etc) is trying desperately to bring them back into relevance. A giant like them does not just shift focus when it's generally on the decline without having a plan of action
>>

It's never going to be optimal for anything that a standard user will do, which is probably why people here hate it so much, but for enterprise data serving and manipulating its unbeatable. Also I just really love ksh.

you won't see their research until you're using it. OOP systems, software engineering standardization were all brainchildren that could only have come from such corporations that concentrate large human and intelectual capital. The problem with the likes of IBM and others such as HP is that they shifted their focus from manufacturing to services, leaving their R&D departments on it's own, still protected from corporate restructuring by corporate policies that obligate capital reinvestment. And because of that their R&D usually releases tech on public domain, also because they want to be the standard at any cost (which is the basis of their business).

Also, wymyn are falling for stuff like >>52493780 and helping to enable them, even if they are not fully-fledged SJWs at all.

> the companies they overrun just fail
Show me examples, so far Microsoft, IBM, Red Hat, or any other company hiring them en masse hasn't failed. Standards go to shit, sure, but as said above everyone just puts up with it and doesn't give a fuck in the end.
>>
>>52494560
why don't they employ chinks?
they work for cheap, there's a ton of them and they are actually decent at their jobs.
>>
>>52494954
Are you guys encourage to shill as hard as you do, or is that handled by sales. My firm is partnered with IBM and honestly, the shilling is so off putting, aside from it I really like working with IBM consultants, 10x better than the experiences I've had with Accenture.
>>
>>52494886
OK, but is it safe to use an optical drive oriented vertically? Obviously that case has a stand to keep it vertical.

The fact that I don't understand most of the acronyms in these posts really, really worries me.

Not really a /g/ guy (haven't even built my own computer due to insufficient funds; never used linux for more than a week..), but damn..

Maybe I should get into retro computers just to learn something new.
>>
>>52495005
i only saw 2 acronyms i didn't understand and they're just enterprise-tier shit

you're just dumb
>>
>>52494774
you think they will make it another decade without getting some exclusive market ready discovery in their research?
>>
>>52495064
yes, because their IT contracts last nearly a decade
>>
>>52495019
MPP, AIX, and BBC..

I'm know I'm dumb, but..damn. Maybe my place is not on /g/ after all.

I'm just bringing the quality of the board down, aren't I?
>>
>>52495094
just look up the terms you don't get
board quality would be 1000x better if everyone googled their questions before making dumb threads
>>
>>52495080
oh...
out of all their meme research, what would be the winning horse in your opinion?
>>
>>52495094
If you're one of those idiots who post in iPhone/mac hate and similar /v/ themed threads, then yes, please leave.
>>
>>52494975
what do you have against qt indians?

gb2/pol/.
>>
>>52495119
the one that they actually release something
>>
>>52495019
What were the two you didn't understand? None of those are enterprise terms. I get the whole purists hating enterprise tech, but honestly it's not as bad as it's made out. The time and monetary pressure is an additional element of challenge, although fair enough it's not the right thing for everyone. Honestly though, if you're not aligning your technical contribution to the business, you're not actually being of any use to your employer.

>>52495005
These acronyms are quite specific to distributed computing, a big trend in enterprise infrastructures with the emergence of big data and the Internet of things. Retro computers aren't something I have much familiarity with, but they're really cool. But a lot of the people in /g/ aren't really involved in enterprise tech, there's a lot of students, hobbyists, or less business facing people who are incredibly technical, it's just a real spectrum.

For your benefit:
- AIX: a proprietary UNIX OS developed by IBM
- MPP: Massively Parallel Processing (imagine how a CPU has multiple cores, but on a larger scale, one service split across many servers)
>>
>>52495094
Don't worry, they're enterprise specific terms. BBC was a model of early personal computer sold in the UK, no one will blame you for not knowing that, it's pretty obscure. I forget when I'm on /g/ that not everyone is in enterprise areas, it's my bad senpai.

See >>52495161
>>
>>52495161
MPP only works for scientific number crunching. For real world applications it's mainframe or many hp dl580 using some flamboyantly named middleware all day long.
>>
>>52495208
Or massive scale ETL batch processing. No offence, but I'm going to take the word of the LTA of a Tier 1 bank over a stranger on /g/.

If you come up with a way to handle time critical ETL processing of TBs of data more efficiently than MPP, you'll be a very wealthy man.
>>
>>52494994
nah not really encouraged to shill or anything, i mean no more than any other place

oh word? accenture consultants have a bretty gud reputation over here
>>
>>52495301
>accenture cunsoltants
>gud

muh keks
>>
>>52495130
I don't care about smartphones and Apple at all. It's no use arguing.

Everyone likes different things; I'm not the kind of person who forces his tastes on other people. Although if a person is clearly doing something wrong, I do correct them (this doesn't happen much)

I do sometimes consult /g/ for software, though - for alternative software.

>>52495161
>>52495203
Thank you for explaining, guys. I'll try learning more about computers so I could be more at place on /g/.

IBM robot looks kickass with that cigar, I'd rather pick him.

who wants a neutered server when you can have the whole thing
>>
>>52495247
that shit works self contained on a mainframe or on a mainframe network that uses messaging via some xyz middleware, don't be fooled. distributed systems as a single system distributed across several machines is an obsolete idea that has been discredited for the majority of applications but scientific.
>>
>>52495301
M8 Accenture consultants are pure shit. I mean I'm biased because rival consultancy but still. Although biased implies they're even competition.

>>52495327
this guy knows

>>52495358
Honestly man, you could do 90% of tech jobs without knowing any of that.

>>52495461
That's funny, because I'm literally on a contract right now at industry forefront that would say the opposite... First project of its kind on this scale though, so I guess it makes sense that it isn't documented.
>>
>>52495005
learning corporate meme words that are not relevant to your field is not a good place to start with technology
>>
>>52495692
I'm a corporate meme in the purest sense, and this guy is right.
>>
>>52495461
It might be the state on the bleeding edge, but you gotta factor in the lag between research and industry, even those being the first mover.
>>
>>52495589
>>52495866
how does it work? NUMAlink and processor boards with hundreads of cpus?
>>
>>52495933
IBM infosphere stack distributed across a couple hundred AIX slave nodes, with a partition & tuning config rolled out across all the nodes with Ansible. Part of a much bigger ecosystem, but that's the bit I'm handling. It runs the ETL data integration for a SAP implementation.
>>
>>52495990
it's not a hardware solution then?

btw the captcha asked me to mark icream pictures and made me mark a frappuccino
>>
>>52496025
Captcha showed me some beautiful sushi and now I'm craving.

I'm not sure about this hardware setup, we just provisioned space in one of the client's data warehouses, and contracted more out in another country for redundancy/DR. It's all VM based, most enterprise setups are, from my experience at least.
