What.

You open an irc client, connect to a server and then join a channel.

Fuck google, I want to know how general /g/ tards use IRC and what channels they use
>>
>>52489872
I run irssi in a screen session on my server. That way, I can ssh in to my server, screen -x, and be back in my irssi session.

For a basic/intro to irc, there are lots of different irc clients for the different operating systems. Mirc was common on windows a number of years ago and maybe it still is. I haven't used windows in ~8 years. Never used mac so I can talk there. For Linux, irssi like I mentioned, but also kirc and lots others.
Whatever you use, once you open the program, you have to connect to a server and then join a channel or channels. I think you can run /list once connected and that wil list the channels. Once you see a channel to join, /join #linux or /join #whatever.
Or you can just google how to use irc.

Just download pidgin and add a freenode account. Choose your favorite nickname. Read the first tab of messages, it will suggest you register (assuming the nickname you chose was available).

You can change the nickname in most clients with /nick

'/msg nickserv help' can help
Nickserv is just a bot. All usernames on freenode can be messaged the same

'/join #freenode' connects you to the freenode channel. This is kinda support, ask freenode related questions there.

Note that the irc spec has messages limited to 512 bytes. That includes your username, channel, and host. I used to know a page that had more details on this but I can't find it. Just know that some clients will calculate this and stop you before your message becomes too long, others just don't care and will fuck you over, making you waste time if you type out a big message like I am now, you would not have received all this. So that's great.

well, it does sort of work, but in the end I've found out that when there is a problem, it's a royal pain to troubleshoot and generally ends with people giving up or getting a proper client anyway.
>>
>>52490095
Perfect. At that point they're ready to take the training wheels off. Let them.

I'm a fag and continue to use pidgin because I'm too lazy to switch, and km just comfortable in it. Its just a simple client to spin up. Its even on ninite for windows plebs.

IRC is probably the simplest communication protocol still in wide use. Just download mIRC, connect to one of the included servers and read the help guide. It will take about 10 minutes to get the basics totally understood.
>>
I got my 11 year old brother on Quakenet, and he can navigate pretty much everything. C'mon, anon, install a client, do some research before shitposting. You have /sqt/ for this too.
>>
>>52490031
On our work irc servers. I don't have time anymore to get on irc when I'm at home (wife, child, house, ....). Other people at work get on freenode. Other irc servers are/were galaxynet, efnet, and dalnet.

weechat, on rizon, with private friends.

Privately.

How to create a permanent channel that always stays open, and the name becomes reserved so nobody can hijack/fake it?
>>
How much information about your system is revealed to others? Can everyone on a channel see your IP and/or hostname?
>>
>>52490734
depends on the network, but usually chanserv.

>>52490802
Very little. Most networks will mask your IP/hostname.

if you are on linux weechat is quite good.

Good servers are

irc.freenode.net (for computer and science related stuff, they often have devs for various software on there so you can get direct tech support from those who made it), good channels are #linux, #weechat, ##math, #bash

also the server irc.rizon.net where you have a lot of 4chan related channels like #4chan.

common commands are:

'/join #channelname' (to join the channel #channelname)

and otherwise you might read the documentation I guess. I can not remember how I learned it. It's like 20 years ago, but I am a dumb fuck so I bet you can do it.
>>
Beat it.

IRC is one of the last few holdouts you braying little shits haven't completely ran into the ground yet.
