Hey all, I just bought myself a used xeon 2690v2 and motherboard to replace my slow as balls fx8350. The only question is am I a retard for purchasing a $2000 xeon for under $100 to use in a desktop?
any and all advice will be accepted
for anyone who doesn't know or want to look it up, that's a 10 core hyperthreaded lga2011 running at 3.0gGhz (3.6 turbo) at 130 watts
Gud but no oc? Will be like 20% slower than a 4.5ghz i5 2500k or whatever in games.

I never OC my cpu's, this isn't an issue. I only occasionally play games anyway because lol 280x and linux
You can get a brand-new 10-core lga2011v3 chip for $1200 now.
Still a good deal.
If it only cost you $100, then its not a bad deal. Its bit better than 8350. Though no real OC.
You could try BCLK if motherboard supports it. However be warned, this OCs everything, so do small increments.

I recently installed gentoo, so I was hoping an additional 12 threads might make compiling less of a chore. Just looking for a nice powerful workstation type cpu and hoping this bad boy fits the bill

I have a 4790k and I'm using 5 threads now.
(rendering in daz studio, watching vaughn tv, browsing firefox, have steam hangout and origin on)

Not to mention that threads can be serialized depending on the task. You have many more threads running but they don't have graphical interfaces.

Why would you be? A CPU is a CPU. It's not like you're buying a tesla for shitty console ports.
You'll never use 10 cores unless you're running a high-traffic server. Even if you run an entire suite of development software, that's going to strain your RAM more than your CPU and you still won't utilize the entire CPU because SERVER CPUS ARENT MEANT FOR CASUAL USE

AutoCAD and Solidworks at the same time would use all 20 threads. Hell, AutoCAD alone can be configured to use all 20 threads.
And before you go implying implications implicitly, I do casually use the entire Autodesk lineup.

Lots of reasonably-common applications can use 20 threads. Software compilers, 3D-rendering software, video editing software, audio encoding and running many simultaneous VSPs for DAW use, etc.
OP here again (on my phone). I don't do very much CAD but I'd like to get into it. Anyway, who gives a damn if it's complete overkill? only 5W more than my 8350 and with considerably more power. plus it's cool as hell. I'll post on /g/ when it comes

getting 2690v2 for $100 is a very good deal. I bought few 2670v1s for like $300 each last month (shipping from usa to yurup).
I'm running dual 2670s on a server with a vt-d passthrough.
Keep in mind that finding motherboard for your rock can be pricey, though.
