So I'm thinking of buying a speedy pro. I love the look of the watch and its heritage but I have 2 concerns.

>1 is the WR.
I'm the kind of guy that loves wearing my watch 24/7 and I hate the idea of a watch that I have to take off if I want to shower or swim. Seems like a stupid minor complaint but it's just how I am.

>2 not sure how winding mechanicals are

Only ever owned quartz or autos. Do they get anoying to have to wind every day or so?

As far as the handwinding part goes, it's just like a nice morning ritual.

Wake up, windup the watch and go on about your day, then before going to sleep wind it up a little more.

>>52472582
More like the entire thing is fake.

I saw the "62 reviews" and knew dis gon be good. I was not disappointed on the reviews page.

But seriously it's shit for 100k you could have A Lange and Sohne and thus do an even bigger pretentious dick wave.

>>52472368
I haven't seen that particular watch before but it's quite nice. Basically a Bambino though, which is about the same price and I'd rather have the Orient than that.

>>52472445
>I want to buy a Speedy Pro
Whilst many here will encourage you, I simply can't. This watch is the biggest piece of overhyped, overpriced, overmarketed watch "heritage" targeted at the WIS audience ever made. End of the day, you're paying, used, minimum 2.5k for a workhorse watch with a basic fucking 17 jewel manual chrono. If you buy new, it's easily 5k or something in that range. That's robbery in my opinion. And for what? To have "heritage" and be like every other WISer? I hate to bring it up, but it is also basically a reddit/WUS watch: the plebs and richfags at r/watches and WUS can't circlejerk to this watch (or to the shit-tier company that is Omega, either) nearly enough.

As for mechanical movements it really depends on what you value. I don't find them too annoying, in fact it's part of my morning ritual to wind my watches as I wake up.

For the WR: again, for the price and intended use, it's pretty junk. You should be able to confidently swim with it but with the "50m" label I wouldn't want to take it in the pool, especially if buying vintage.
However don't let me discourage you. If you like it, purchase what you want. I'd just take my 2.5k elsewhere, for those kinds of prices I could have an actual justfuckmyshitup.jpg-proof tool chronograph (probably with an automatic movement) with ease. And still have $700 left over to buy a new-made Russian Strela, the first Chrono in space period

My preferred companies to buy from for those would be Sinn, Damasko, Muehle Glashutte (all German) or Seiko itself, probably their higher-end line with the NE88,

Those look great, and I like the bagel-shaped pushers. I only had one "modern" 3133, an Aviator from the early 2000s and I was pleasantly surprised with its accuracy and variance relative to my early to mid 80s 3133 and derivatives.

>>52473145
I'm 90% positive that watch uses a 2609 movement, which is pretty bullet proof.

No signs of water damage and the dial has that nice CCCP stamp along with correct text.

Though imo that dial is god awful, there are much nicer looking Raketas.
>>
>>52472622

>This watch is the biggest piece of overhyped, overpriced, overmarketed watch "heritage" targeted at the WIS audience ever made.

Show me another mechanical chronograph with a clean, perfectly proportioned, high contrast dial, recessed subdials and not a Valjoux 7750 movement for under 2.5k

It's just a perfect design. And 2.5k isn't that much when it comes to watches. IMO the Speedmaster Professional is well worth it.
>>
>>52472622
>>52473373

Is Bulova's Precision series any good? I'm looking for a chronograph that isn't dogshit and doesn't cost four digits. I'm too sceptical about Seagull's 1963 in the long term. I think that leaves mechanicals out of my reach then.
>>
>>52473165
I don't know where I got the 100m figure, looking at some pictures they seem to be 3atm resistant, worse than the speedy

For shame, maybe I'll hold off on a chrono or get a quartz, I don't know what I expected with non screwing pushers anyway
>>
>>52473481
>The Seagull 1963 Militar
>b-but it's Chinese
Still a better deal, and it's well-proportioned. Also only about 400 USD, with an original design and good manual movement. And many dial options available.

More importantly, it's not over-marketed garbage. Many of the components on the Omega are made in China anyways and the movement is very basic for the price, yes despite its ubiquity the Valjoux is a better deal and movement.

Sorry, but the Speedy Pro is all marketing without much to back it up except for muh heritage and muh design, which Omega have milked into oblivion to sell to WIS.
>>
>>52473680

Did you look at my post, then?

I wouldn't buy reissued Strelas. They may have Russian movements but I'm certain it's Chinese casing+marketing hype, that old strategy.

Buy what you want but for $2500 you'll get a much better deal with Sinn or Damasko than the Omega Speedy (and you won't be another redditor wearing a redditcore watch)
>>
>>52473719
But it doesn't have recessed subdials. Plus the movement isn't reliable I heard.

Also who cares if it's is overmarketed. You are buying it used anyways.

>muh design

We are talking about mechanical watches here. If you really care about getting the most for your money then you would just get yourself a cheap quartz.
>>
>>52473778
Yeah the sinn looks nice, though I'd have plenty of options at that price range, a chronograph wouldn't be my first choice to be honest.

Chronos are neat but ultimately don't speak to me like divers or other designs.
>>
>>52473871
>find me a watch that is the Omega Speedmaster and looks exactly like it and has its design features but isn't an Omega Speedmaster
>Haha checkmate

I agree with you we're talking mechanicals, and as I said: if you like the Speedmaster, go for it. But it's still overhyped and way overpriced, even used, especially for the price. And yes, a Valjoux based mechanical chrono with interesting tech is still better than this watch.

I'll agree with you the ST19 chrono movement isn't the best, but that's a problem often of the factory: being chinkshit there's no QC of which to speak. If it was made to a decent standard most problems would evaporate.

Anyways to each his own but if I have to hear another "heritage" story about how "great" the Speedmaster is I'm gonna lose it

Feels weird, I think. I'm used to whatever mineral crystal glass my current watch has.

Acrylic is easy to mold into a thick dome shape like the crystal on that watch. Sapphire crystals have to be cut and polished from a block instead so carving out a dome rather than a thin flat crystal wastes a lot of material and is expensive.

I think plastic crystals look slightly different in person than glass or sapphire would but I'm not sure how to describe it, I guess it looks more old fashioned. It also feels warmer to the touch and doesn't really get fingerprint smudges on it. It's very soft and will inevitably get scratched, but polishing it is very easy and you can just polish it a bit every once in a while to keep it looking new.
>>
>>52474087
Carreras suffer from the same problem. The reissue isn't so bad, one of the only good things TAG has done in years, but it doesn't stop that the vintages are fucking $8k for a domed plexi used watch that wasn't even that great to begin with.

Of course this is because watch luxury lifestyle blogs like Hodinkee are obviously in bed with many dealers and so use hype to up the price of vintage watches.

I actually quite love many vintage watches, but the price on them is ridiculous when one considers the maintenance costs for models years out of production. And when everything has to be replaced with aftermarket parts, how much is it "muh heritage vintage watch" anymore?

>>52474352
Hey there, sorry to say buddy but you'd probably do best to get a new one. Unless the sentimental value is worth it to you to get repaired, a new one for lower-end models is usually a better deal. If it's a unique or rare model then disregard.
The reason is it probably needs a service, which is expensive in our lands.

>>52475114

Price on the old one again is muh vintage heritage puting the price up. It is cool, though, to have a watch from when the entire world was busy killing each other and it's still ticking.

The 15k new reference is just Panerai being shekelmeisters, which we all knew they were especially after the Brooklyn Bridge scandal.

>>52475579
Personally I love acrylic crystals, I like the look and the durablity. Even if they scratch it can be easily fixed. If anything I'd want more, especially military-style, watches to come with plexiglass rather than sapphire. Also makes replacement easier, sapphire is pricey.
>>
>>52475579
Well, I guess there are pros and cons to both types.

I'd have to see it for myself in a store as I mentioned.

Ordering €700 worth of watch without even looking at it in natural light through my own eyes just seems absurd.

More seriously, consider if you want a mechanical watch or not. They have some drawbacks, namely the relative inaccuracy and the need to keep them wound (or worn in the case of automatics).

You only buy fakes to impress yourself. The smugness of looking at your wrist and going YA'LL RIPOFF COMPANIES SURE GOT TOLD, all while still having a pocket full of money for other stuff.

Fuck I'd buy it.

I've never bought any of the collabs that actually manage to materialize from efforts on this cesspool of a website, but I'd buy the fuck out of a watch.

Acrylic is the most durable of current watch glass.
Really the best option for a field watch or a diver.
You can even polish out the scratches yourself.

You can identify it, the reference number will probably be on the inside of the caseback. If you're too much of a vagina to open it up yourself then take it to a watchmaker, it'll take like 10 seconds.

But the problem is that I don't see many new watches that appeal to me.

I don't want a watch over 40mm. I don't want a watch with a shiny metallic dial. I don't want a watch with an overloaded dial. I don't want a chrono with the Valjoux 7750 subdial alignment. I don't want a watch with a flat face. I don't want a dressy watch.

Thread seems to be alive, so might as well go and ask.

I currently have a 420 case'd Amphibia with classic scuba dude dial. Now i kind want to change it and i'm at somewhat of a stalemate.

I'm wondering if i should get a new Amphibia with a blue scuba dude (710059), or should i just get either a 090 or 710 case and implant the movement into it.

A replacement case off Ebay is between half and two-thirds of a whole Amphibia in price, so only go for it if you definitely don't want another Amphibia.

Swapping the case should be easy, you just remove the caseback, take out the winding crown, drop out the movement and put it in the other case.

There are counterfeit Komandirskies. They're not extremely common but they do exist.

Fake is also synonymous with franken, but that watch is not just franken when literally the dial (admittedly), hands, and possibly the crown and bezel are all aftermarket and/or inappropriate for the model. Anyone who pays that much for it is an idiot, and does create legitimate concern for potential buyers.

get real. Water is bad for watches period. If it has been designed to handle the water, a shower isnt going to bother it. Obviously, you dont shower with a Patek minute repeater. But if you have a dive watch, 007, or Orient Mako/Ray, Sub etc..there is nothing wrong with it.

>>
>>52479785
No it isn't

Anyway, the whole water and water pressure thing isn't that big of a deal. It's the very sudden temperature change to a ridiculous level and it's the chemicals that will come in to contact with your watch have potential fuck up the gasket. If the gasket gets fucked up the water resistance drops, which could be a problem because you need every piece of water resistance you can get because youre showering with it

Somebody didn't pay attention in fluid mechanics class.

But I agree with your sentiment, I don't get why you people buy water resistant watches and then baby them and think a little water is going to wreck them instantly. But I also don't understand why you want to shower with a watch on, I'm normally naked in the shower but maybe that's just me. In fact the first thing I do when I get home is take off my watch and I don't put one on again until I'm going out the door.

The Alpinist is a hair under 40mm, it won't be too small.

Isn't the owl penis like 40mm? That's not too small for anyone, even on the most tree trunk slavwrists it'll look ok. I don't have one but I do have an 007 and some 38mm and 40mm watches to compare it again, hope this helps.

It is similar to the Orient Bambino, true. I like the subdial though, and the Chinese one is slightly smaller and thinner. Worth a shot I figured, so I ordered it. Will post pictures when it comes in a few days.

I must have 5 ~$150 watches at this point. I really should just stop buying them and buy one good one, but it's nice to have a rotation too.

I think they're all pretty different, different enough for me anyway. The only ones that are really similar are the two white penisquartzes but I can't decide which one to get rid of because the KQ is in better condition and looks nicer but the GQ is a twin quartz and it lets me claim that I own a GS.

Alright, then. Thanks. It was just that most of the descriptions I've seen of the Alpinist say 38mm. And going by my Seiko 5, I just don't like that size. I was hoping to see if the Alpinist wears bigger.

That Citizen is super cool. A shame they don't make watches like these anymore.

It's a rodina, so although I don't know which specific watch it's copying it's almost definitely gonna be a near exact aethetic clone of some expensive watch

Yeah I call in a fake fire every time I shower so the fire department shows up. That way I can get a firehose ran to my shower.

That is still analog.

Now, all jokes aside, please don't post that ugly pile of dogshit here.
I like how a lange felt the need to have that trashy looking screw in the middle. The small ones are ok tho.

>a lange design reminds me of this
>>
>>52484499
No it's not, it's a digital readout. It being a mechanical movement doesn't make it analog.

Digital means that it is displayed in pixels.
>>
>>52484547
No it doesn't. It can refer to anything using digits, which is exactly what it's doing.
>>
>>52484535
Thank you, agreed.I just posted the Diesel to show that cheap fashionbrands use that kind of design. In no way i do like the watch.

Ok, just searched for it. Yep, i was wrong. nvm.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/digital
>DIGITAL
>1. displaying a readout in numerical digits rather than by a pointer or hands on a dial: a digital speedometer; a digital watch.
>3. of, relating to, or using data in the form of numerical digits: a digital image; digital devices.
>4. involving or using numerical digits expressed in a scale of notation, usually in the binary system, to represent discretely all variables occurring in a problem.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital
>Digital usually refers to something using digits, particularly binary digits.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watch#Digital
>A digital display simply shows the time as a number, e.g., 12:08 instead of a short hand pointing towards the number 12 and a long hand 8/60 of the way round the dial.

PS a 7-segment LCD display like what you're thinking of does not have pixels either.

The extreme temp changes from a piping hot shower to a freezing winter room probably won't be "fine" though. Right?
