Up until the end of 1999 nobody really cared. They knew about it, but it was no big deal. In fact, the 'year 2000 problem' was a plot point in Office Space, it was the task Peter was hired for, as emphasis on how dull his job and his life was.
Then the mainstream media got word of it and sold it for mass hysteria, and then nothing happened and it was forgotten about

Remember that whole deal with the large hadron collier in 2008 or so? Remember how only a few in-the-know tech sites were reporting on the possibility of a black hole, and then suddenly overnight everyone was freaking out about it? Same deal.

Perhaps in the US? Here in Eastern Europe you'd rarely see ZIP drives outside of academia. The consumer market went straight from 3.5" floppies to CD-RWs (the earlier CD-R-only drives weren't very popular) around the year 2000 or so. Between the two there a sort of awkward period of time where you'd carry around your old hard drive if you wanted to transfer more than a megabyte or so.
>>
>>52473107
>there was a sort of awkward period

To Microsoft users expecting Y2K to break their operating systems:
Why not switch to a non-corporatist, non-fascist operating system like Linux?
It's fast and we almost have a functioning windowing system.
Because it's made to work like UNIX (like Sun), the millennium will not break your clock.
It's fairly easy to use and free to get.
If you have a spare floppy and you want to try it out, send it my way and I'll (legally) put Linux on it.
Best regards,

keep in mind the "40x" refers to 40 times the data rate of cd audio, and not related to the actual rotational speed (rpm), cd's use clv, so at the same rotational speed, the data rate is lowest in the center, and greatest at the outer edge
