As a tech person one of the biggest things you should know is that after 9/11 the government went into full panopticon mode.
The NSA spies on EVERYTHING done by EVERYBODY.
Due to technology being accepted by the masses that shamelessly spies on you it's very difficult to live a normal life while keeping your privacy intact.
Edward Snowden was a whistle blower who leaked a bunch of classified documents revealing just how bad things have gotten.

There are good things about how advanced cell phones are, for example you can pull 50Mbps on cellular internet in a decently-sized city which is cool as fuck, but many people use them to avoid social situations and it can cause problems sometimes.

AMD just stopped being able to compete with Intel. Since the Core2 line, AMD's CPUs have never been better than, much less equal to, Intel's. The upside is that AMD makes great GPUs now, since they bought ATI (I think that happened right around 2006).

Ah, what else has changed since 2006? That was the year I started browsing /g/.

JavaScript is a very popular and much more powerful language now. 3D graphics and server-side code can be written in JavaScript.

Steam is a huge platform now, instead of only carrying Valve games, almost every PC game is published on Steam.

Windows XP is regarded with nostalgia, but only used in poor countries. Many current programs do not work on it.

Most people stream all of their media on demand, rather than maintaining a local digital file.

A lot more shit, if your srs about the 10 year coma.

Microsoft launched Windows Vista. It was shit but after a few security and bug patches it became alright. Some people on /g/ use it to avoid the botnet. Unfortunately the damage was done and it became a tainted OS in the eyes of the public.

Microsoft launched Windows 7 to critical acclaim. People loved it. Basically XP but with a much glossier finish and a lot more fixes. In its time it was rather trendy.

Microsoft then launched Windows 8. It was absolute shit in the opinion of almost everyone. They tried to make Windows tablet accessible but did a half-assed job at it by making the start menu fullscreen, flattening the UI and making things larger. It was unusable on both tablets and computers for the mostpart.

Soon after they released 8.1. It was a free upgrade for 8 users and fixed the underlying issues but stayed adament that the fullscreen start menu was a good idea and that "metro" apps needed to exist.

Last year they announced they would be releasing a new Windows, named Windows 10. They claimed that due to its modular nature they would never need to release another version of Windows again (this is complete bullshit). People got freaked out by the spying in the beta but we all chalked it down to it being for improvement of the final release. However as soon found out the final release also had the same, if not more spyware in it. Also it was hideous i m o f a m.

Since then MS have been trying to force user to upgrade and have done some shady shit to hide the telemetry, constantly releasing forced updates to patch any anti-spyware shit.

That was a short chronology of the last 9 - 10 years of Microsoft for you.

Sophisticated, touch-driven smartphones coupled with high-speed mobile networks are the dominant form of personal computing. This has given rise to another Silicon Valley startup boom driven by mobile apps and accessories.

Social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc) are the mainstream forms of social interaction on the Internet. They serve primarily to connect corporate brands with consumers through marketing and ads. Instant messaging is still popular, though no one uses AIM anymore.

YouTube monopolized all non-porn Web videos and is owned by Google.

Google transformed from a simple Web search company into a monstrous multi-headed hydra recently renamed Alphabet, with investments in everything from AI to robotics to nanotech. They are also one of the biggest spenders of government lobbying.

Apple is now one of the richest companies on Earth, and by far the richest tech company. Its products are still iconic and immensely popular. Steve Jobs died of cancer in 2011.

Microsoft is on a slow descent into irrelevance. Windows is a legacy platform. Monkey Boy was replaced by an Indian.

Palm was purchased then destroyed by HP, before the remains were sold to LG. Nokia was purchased then destroyed by Microsoft. Motorola was purchased by Google, then sold to Lenovo. RIM was renamed BlackBerry and now makes Android phones.

Physical media is still declining. Music, movies, and TV shows are primarily streamed or downloaded through vendors such as Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Pandora, iTunes, and Amazon. Blockbuster is dead.

Newspapers are dying and being replaced by shallow, sensationalist, low-cost "clickbait" journalism designed to maximize ad revenue by pandering to the lowest common denominator. Blogging is also dying.

Flash is on its deathbed, succeeded by HTML5.

Self-driving cars have entered the mainstream consciousness and will likely become reality in 5-10 years.

Flying quadcopter drones and 3D printing are popular hobbies.

Did I miss something?

From a programming standpoint:
Javascript is generally the most used language by far (15%), followed by
Java (10%),
Python (7.5%),
C&CPP (7.2%),
PHP (6.3%) and
Ruby (6%). (Source: Githut)
Right after finely handcrafted C/PP code, Java is the language with the highest performance.
Microsoft made C#, the core of their .net framework and their web development framework asp.net open source. C# runs properly on Linux now.
The hottest web development is now done in server side Javascript, it's called node.js and runs on Googles v8 vm. At first it was considered pure meme technology but right now you can get node.js jobs everywhere.
The currently preferred way of transferring data over the internet is now JSON, which is the human readable serialization format of JS objects. It's incredibly easy to understand. Servers offer JSON APIs that conform to the RESTful standard to varying degrees. REST is a bit of a meme technology, most people don't properly understand it and many who do don't like it very much and mix it with anti-REST design.
