Whats wrong with saying coding?
>>
Fuck off OP you retard. You're arguing semantics idiot.
>>
>>52462323
Depends what you're writing.

>>52462838
A newfangled way of saying programming used by people who tend to know fuck-all about actual programming. A real programmer would never refer to themselves as a "coder".

>>52462896
15 year old "coder" detected.
>>
>>52463047
I hate this meme. I personally call myself a programming or tell people that I program computers, but coder/coding is very acceptable in my opinion. It's shorter, generally more understandable to normies and in essence describes what programmers do, which is write code.

You might say that no "real programmer" would refer to themselves as coders but anybody without an ego and even remotely mature wouldn't really give a fuck unless they felt it was an inaccurate description; which it isn't.

The only way I could see the difference between the two is that a coder is your average code monkey who maintains or possibly improves existing code whereas a programming has a much deeper understanding of computational theory, even if not at the level of a good CS grad. Somebody who can write good, clean code at a lower level to get a job accomplished with efficiency, finesse and quality work.

I liked pixels becausr it mentioned 4chan and how useless it was lol xD :P
>>
>>52463170
So you're arguing that a coder to a programmer is like a nurse to a doctor?
>>
code doesn't even make sense when refering to modern languages, it's not constructed of indecipherable symbols that could mean anything, they are written in words and generic mathematical symbols.
Illiterate people don't refer to books as code, because it's not code, they just don't know how to read it.
>>
>>52462004
Saw Ava and Fassbender in person the other day, she's qt as fuck.
Should've asked for a pic and asked her a turing related question but Fassbender looks intimidating in person.
>>
well, the word 'coding' aside, that movie was pretty dang interesting
really enjoyed it
>>
>>52462004
>Implying I'm not a hacker
>>
I'm gonna use "coder" from now on and hope people like OP get an aneurysm.
>>
>>52463422
Close, I guess. But for the most part the difference between a doctor and a nurse isn't much besides more advanced biology.

A nurse could do any family practicians job. Your family doctor will always send you to a specialize after doing a basic diagnosis. Rarely will a doctor give a prognosis for anything beyond ear infections or basic medications.

I work in a hospital and even the well respected doctors there agree that a lot of doctors are just overpaid nurses.

But I digress. You will always have people in the field doing dirty work and people behind desks. Detective, cop, agent, etc.. Coder, computer scientist, software engineer. Whatever.

Doesn't make a difference to me though. All of the coders, programmers, web developers, etc... All get along well in the real business world.
>>
>>"I did a search and found one of my best coders."
OP, did you even watch the movie? The CEO admits that he picked the protagonist because he was a lonely fuck, and he designed the robot's face based on his porn search history.
>>

>>
OP is too autistic to realize that normies and "real" programmers (programmers with jobs) don't give a shit.
>>

That's a quote from when he's talking to him outside (by the waterfall) and laying more lies on him, you dumb fuck.

That's the opposite then. Stop using words too big for your scope of understanding before you look even more stupid.

OP is just angry he's not le leet programmer since his field is increasingly growing in abstraction to the point where soccer moms and teenagers can do a lot of the work.
>>
>>52464444

There really arent, even Interstellar was at best meh, there is only so much information about technology you can convey in 3hrs(counting the rest of the plot the interesting stuff boils down to about 15min).
>>
>>52464444
don't take my word for it, it's only my opinion

in general, I wouldn't turn to Hollywood for anything that is supposed to "make you think"

Find a good technical book or read reputable scifi about AI. That will satisfy your mind much better than a watered down over dramatized movie.
>>
>>52462004
There are substantially worse things a movie can do for computer science than using the terms "coding" and "coder".
If you're so desperate to sperg over something that you have to throw a tantrum over "coder" then you honestly would be doing everyone a favor by offing yourself already.

CS isn't a dwindling field, it has a poor student population. Computer science is a strong, very important field that just isn't marketing itself properly. It's filled with students who want to be coders and spend their days being part of a team that makes products. Not be a part of innovate think tanks the develop new ideas, products and the furthering of everything we know and can do with computers.

I understand that us here on /g/ have our own memes that we like to spread, but if you sincerely believe the CS meme degree you're going down a bad track, my friend.
>>
>>52464788
I'm just trying to highlight on the state of the CS job market in a language the average /g/ user can comprehend
On gee you have to be a master of meme speak

>>
>>52464829
CS continues to grow in abstraction in the sense that programming and computing infrastructure continues to simplify itself. No longer are a team of CS experts needed per machine. No longer is a large mass of dev teams needed to create infrastructure for companies.
Unless you're from a top institution and/or have skills in a specialized field of CS the future is looking very bleak.
>>
>>52464857
It was worth a download imo.
>>
Why the fuck are you watching TV? Why the fuck are you whining about watching TV?

None of you TV fags are never going to amount to shit.
>>
>>52464444
There will never be a good /sci/ film past Primer.
>>
>>52464931
But that's wrong. While it's true if you're not at a good university and getting good marks then you're chances of high success are low. But there are many business, organizations and corporates that aren't even technology companies that need support and infrastructure. Going to college to get a 65k a year job with benefits is not a bad thing. Network administrators make around 80k.

Development is easier than it use to be thanks to all of the tools we have available to use. But in a corporate scale or even a small software firm trying to rise up, there is always a need for grunts, senior programmers, design specialists and lead software engineers. You need people to communicate with clients and understand how to go about project creation, budget allocation, time, resources and relaying this ton a team and working with capabilities and limitations while keeping them motivated. You need people to make functional attractive designs that follow standards and you need people to program the underlying mechanics for the project. Depending on the project you'll need data specialists and database engineers, web developers and communication specialists, hardware specialists and engineers, promoters and advertisers and a whole lot of other shit.

Some things can be done by one person who is good in multiple areas but at which point do you value time over productivity? When do you say enough is enough for one person to take on by himself when we need products out there for the customer and making profit for us?

The future is bleak for people who don't apply themselves.

>>

I'm a software engineer and although I wouldn't say "coding" or "coder" myself, it's perfectly acceptable if someone said those words to me. Shut your whore mouth.
>>
>>52465349
>65k a year job with benefits is not a bad thing. Network administrators make around 80k.
I would not consider that good by any means with today's cost of living. Don't forget the costs of the school that have piled up. While there is still a good amount of skillsets needed to develop CS related projects it's only going to become easier in the coming few years. The barrier of entry is dangerously low for typical CS work and even those that apply themselves face competition with a large group of graduates coming from more prestigious establishments.
Low level CS work is often getting outsourced to foreigners and other countries where workers can churn out decent quality work at a fraction of the cost and without any additional benefits. These workers are capable of quality output that would cost a lot more in developed countries because they are getting paid well by their standard of living.
You have to try really hard to stand out in the current CS market. Even if you manage to, standout, you will only continue to live in fear of your professional standing as CS gets more bloated with graduates, being the overhyped major that it is.
tl;dr The CS boat sailed a while ago

I swear you guys will pick absolutely any binary situation to get mad about something and act like you're in the secret club of people who know their shit.

Also: you sound like a dude who learnt to code as a hobby.
Also: you have a serious Dunning-Kruger effect going on.
Also: "coding" is commonly used in universities and business situations (do you 'hardcode' a string or do you 'hardprogram' it, you gigantic faggot?).
Also: coding and programming are not synonymous.
Now go watch some anime and play vidya.

I actually prefer software developer to programmer as well.
>>
>>52462004
You program your microwave.
You write code.
>>
>>52471920
Those are different things.

Software developers also design and test the software.

Programming is just one part of the development cycle.

>>
>he got cucked by a robot

lmao
>>
>>52471967
And what programmer doesn't test or does some design for the software he's writting?

What I'm saying is that the same disdain you people have against "coding" in favor of "programming" is there against "programming" in favor of "developing".

Whenever a movie that calls them programmers comes out the same thread will appear.
>>
>>52463047
So what, they used terminology that would help all viewers who were interested in the movie would understand, don't pass a kidney stone or anything.
>>
>>52462838
It implies at you write code rather than write a program.

A code is something that people have to decipher or decode to understand.
Programming is done in a language that isn't meant to be difficult to understand.
We use language to share ideas, instructions.
If you spend a good portion of your time to make your programs more readable, referring to your work as code is an insult.
>>
>>52462004

I've heard the term "code" used a lot in the 1990's and early 2000's by people using assembly language. This interview contains an explanation from someone who probably has more programming and coding knowledge in a finger nail than all of /g/ put together.

http://vxheaven.org/lib/iv001.html

He explains the difference between "coders" and "developers" but doesn't say anything about how he defines "programmers". If you don't feel like hunting for it (his attempts at informal English when his first language is Czech are a bit cringey and annoying), he says knowledge of a low-level language makes you a coder, anything else just makes you a developer.

I've got several other examples of where "coding" is used exclusively for assembly language programming, but this is the only one that explicitly states it.
