Bass lover anons, go get a SubPac!

I played 20 hours of Dragon's Dogma on my HD800S. It sounds okay to be honest. Haven't listened to music with it as yet. I feel like it's a side-grade to my HD600, it has more bass and treble relative to the HD600. It also sounds more spacious but this may be a placebo effect, so I can't say I'm 100% sure about this.

I'll keep it since I could actually use it for more than 5 minutes unlike the old HD800.

Quads GET!

It's tactile audio. The SubPac S2 is the seatback model. You lean your back onto the SubPac S2 and feel bass from 5Hz – 130Hz.

Today I sold my best amplifier.

I just came to the logic conclusion that I didn't need the power of a dedicated headphone amplifier that weighs 3 kilos and can output enough power to drive small speakers.
It was the best amplifier I've ever had, with literally no noise to be heard.

But my O2 is good enough.

Current setup:

>o2 amplifier
>gamma 2 DAC
>AKG K701 and Senn HD650

Budget - ~ 100usd
Location - Freedom land
Source - phone
Preferred type of headphone - IEMs
Comfort level - does not matter , needs to stay in when running
Preferred tonal balance - bassy

I really want bluetooth headphones , I was looking at the Jaybird x2 or one of the thousand 20 usd ones on amazon. Thoughts?

Yo "friends" I am looking for some headphone. Am not an audiophile however so not super knowledgeable about where even to look nor am I looking to spend very much.

>Budget
Probably $80 or so. Definitely not over $100
>Location
In the USA. Near Boston.
>Source
Plugging these into my phone (oneplus one) and computer. Nothing special at all. Nothing
>Preferred type of headphone
Full sized over ear headphones. Big cups too are nice, ones that wouldn't rest on my ears.
>Open or closed
Closed. I'd like to use these on campus and/or wherever I go. While we're at it, sound blocking is very nice too. My current earbuds block a good 80% of sound without turning up the volume and I love it
>Comfort level
Would like fairly comfortable headphones. Comfortable enough to wear for some hours at a time.
>Preferred tonal balance
Shit nigga I like music. I'll use my free pass here.
>Preferred music
I like all music. David Bowie to Madeon to Lil b are all on my phone. I'm not big on one genre.
>Past headphones
Whatever $20 pair of headphones I have from amazon. I'm not an audiophile by any means so I don't have much to go on.
>>
Can i get a recommendation or two?

>Budget

>Location

>Source

>Preferred type of headphone

>Open or closed
Closed is a must

>Comfort level
Comfort is very important. If they're uncomfortable, I simply won't use them. Worst case, I'll sacrifice audio quality for comfort, but I imagine with my budget I can get a set of headphones that are comfortable and have decent sound quality

>Preferred tonal balance
Neutral or slightly bassy.

>Past headphones
ATH M50x

I liked the M50x's. They were really comfy, and the detachable cords were a really useful feature. I don't think I want to give that up.

They were a good pair of entry level headphones, as far as I can tell, but I'd like a recommendation for a decent upgrade from more experienced audiophiles than me. I wouldn't necessarily mind another pair of the m50's, but I have a budget where I think I can afford something better.

Yeah.
The collapsing part of the right headphone has busted, so it doesn't sit properly on my ear anymore. It falls off, in fact.

Looking at a new set of cans, it seems like the m70's wouldn't have that problem; the tradeoff being that they wouldn't be collapsible, but that's quite alright. I enjoyed the m50s, and I guess that these would be a comfortable change for me.

I owned the X2, now I only own the K702. The K702 is better for every music genre, because it's neutral. Compared to the K702, the X2 has less sub-bass, powerful and bloated midbass and recessed mids, which translates to poor details. I would recommend the X2 to only those people who just listen to bass heavy music. The K702 performs much better at everything else and it has a slightly more spacious sound in my opinion.

>Preferred type of headphone
Portable, on ear or over-ear because they can keep my ears warm in the winter. I wouldn't object to a good pair of IEMs, but I've had trouble with getting a good fit in the past.

>Open or closed
Closed for sure. I do value soundstage, but I also value public transport/biking, and by extension, isolation.

>Comfort level
As long as I can wear them, and they don't look gay, I'm good.

>Preferred tonal balance
Tastefully bassy. You know what it is.

>Preferred music
Anime soundtracks, Electro-pop, Whatever the Arcade Fire and The Strokes are now. Random Access Memories, rhythm games, Shania Twain, I can enjoy anything.

>Past headphones
Urbanears Plattan (sexy but sounded like a swamp)

Monoprice 8323(sounded nice, pitiful soundstage)

Harman/Kardon CL (sexy, sounded slightly better, somehow even worse soundstage)

V-moda Crossfade M-100 (nearly perfect [rip in peace mids] but had to return for defective ear pad [the durability and features will be sorely missed])

I'm seriously considering the AKG Y50BT. I hear good things about their sound, and since my Z2's headphone jack is fucked up 'by design', I won't have to deal with its fickleness toward cables.

Also, since I'm going to be wearing these for 80% of my waking hours, as a requirement, they must be somewhat attractive. I will sacrifice a bit of SQ/comfort to that end.

Doesn't have to be the main focus, but I will be wearing them for extended periods of time

accented mids and the rest neutral, or neutral

mostly hiphop and classical, but I listen to a lot of podcasts as well. you can see why I'd want better mids but no recessed treble

>Past headphones
my current iems are piston 3s, this would obviously have to be a (somewhat significant) upgrade

it would be great if their impedance is higher than 32ohms, certainly not anything lower. I've been doing a lot of searching but haven't found anything that fits the bill. could someone give me a few suggestions please?

Yes. Unlike what most people believe, ripping CD into lossless formats (be it ALAC or FLAC) is a delicate procedure and it doesn't always grant that the final product will be as good as the original one. Some shameful individuals even convert lossy files into lossless ones. Do you want to be sure that what you're listening to is the best thing? Get the physical copy and be happy forever.

No, I listened to a lot of their recordings on my K702 and they all sounded good to me.

Not that much difference. The K7xx is a rebranded version of the K702 65th Anniversary Edition, which boosted the bass by 3db or so over the regular K702 and thus sounds slightly warmer.

This is mostly an improvement depending on your preferences since the K702 has tight but somewhat lean bass.

I paid 198€ for my K702 (shipping fees included) and I find its bass great (very detailed and tight, punchy enough, I wouldn't call it lean, I'd rather call it descreetly present). Honestly, being european, I wouldn't spend 199$ plus shipping fees and services for the K7XX which basically only grants an unnecessary bass boost over the K702. Just my opinion though, I prefer a cold/detailed sound.

Lean is not inherently negative, but since the bass on the K7XX is closer to neutral than the K702 I'd say the term is appropriate when comparing to most other headphones.

Human ears are able to catch sounds from 20hz to 20khz ( let's even say 17khz and below after 20 years), then you don't need to bother about the reduction of frequency range of your headphones.

>>52471840
That bandwidth number is falsified. Most headphones struggle at 20Hz-20kHz(which is the human ear's auditory bandwidth and 20kHz is a generous upper limit)within sensible limits and practically all of them are extremely inaccurate in the high frequencies past 6kHz or so. You don't need more extension than from 20Hz to 20Khz and it's always about the response within these limits that is important. Manufacturers almost never provide this kind of data so you need to look up measurements for them. As for the question you had, no. You don't need it as you simply won't hear it and even if you did, your headphones can't reproduce it. There are plenty of amplifiers which have a frequency response way beyond the human audible spectrum.
>>
>>52471657
haha r u me?
>>
>>52471840
A question: are you ever interested in hearing bat calls or the ultrasound tests performed in a hospital?

These are not interesting frequencies to humans, and thus the idea of a bottleneck is silly.
An interesting range of frequencies might be said to extend from 16 Hz to 16000 Hz. A sensation can certainly be perceived above (if your ears are young and unspoiled by noise) and below, but these undistorted sines lose their tonal character. The ear is very poorly designed to capture sounds well outside this range, and they don't serve a particular biologically useful function either.

As another note, DAC are rated to handle 2 Hz signals per Redbook, though there isn't a real limit here.
Amplifier response goes well above 20kHz, and usually deep into the infrasonic range as well.

This is meant for those who are interested in open AKG and want some basic infos:
1) K612 Pro: non-detachable cable, 5dB bass boost over K702, generally the cheapest model (and arguably the most neutral)
2) K7XX: detachable cable, 3dB bass boost over K702, generally as expensive as K702 but shipping fees and extra services should be considered for non-american buyers
3) K702: detachable cable, a little colder than the other two heapdhones and arguably more detailed

Hopefully this is helpful.

Would it be possible to lower harmonic distortion with precise DSP? Similar to frequency response equalization you would just create the opposite effect using a DSP filter to harmonic frequencies based on how much the headphones exhibit distortion. I can understand you can't fully get rid of it and that you can't magically lower the "noise floor" for a lack of a better term of headphones but it sounds plausible to reduce the amount of hamonics at least.

>>52472292
Digital sampling is the cause of it. The type of sampling affects the result. I'm no expert on the subject, I understand the principle but I'm poor at explaining it in detail with correct terminology. Here's a simple example of how bicubic compares to nearest neighbor in image downscaling. Moire effect is significant in the nearest neighbor.

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/158452

Here's a video for starters:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FG9jemV1T7I

>>52472317
Depends on the DAC but there is a probability that the "100 dollar dac" is better than your on-board solution. Audibility of this is an entirely different question however and it's extremely likely that there is no difference unless you have audible problems with the one you are using now.

If I buy O2+ODAC combo for my headphones but down the line decide to get powered monitors (LSR 305), will be able to plug in the xlr cable from the speakers to the combo and use the dac and volume control with the speakers?

You need to make sure to ask that the RCAs be preouts and not lineouts. It should be default from head'n'hifi though.

with an adapter, yes. but thats not really what its meant to do

Except it's an advertised feature on the combo with the RCA outs.

I'd looked at them for my next at-home pair, and they do qualify as attractive (without someone wearing them), but the cable isn't even removable, so no inline controls. Shame, I really liked these.

what the fuck is even the difference between the K550, K551 and K553? isn't it all the same shit sound wise?

>Would it be possible to lower harmonic distortion with precise DSP? Similar to frequency response equalization you would just create the opposite effect using a DSP filter to harmonic frequencies based on how much the headphones exhibit distortion.
Presenting the distortion as only harmonic overtones is a deceptive simplification. These distortions are produced because the the loudspeaker diverges from the simple linear model of circuit voltage and the simple moving resonator. Inverting the linear response, such as by EQ or convolution is routine and easily done, but these are only expressions of a linear system, even if they affect the non-linear results.

You have harmonic overtones, but then you also have buzzing, intermodulation, and other defects, besides noise.

>I can understand you can't fully get rid of it and that of headphones but it sounds plausible to reduce the amount of hamonics at least.
You can certainly try. Some approaches that come to mind are

-active feedback based on loudspeaker position and cone movement
-modeling of major non-linear components (inductance, stiffness, magnetic variation, turbulence, etc.)
-approximation by Volterra series

The Volterra series is supposed to describe non-linear systems in general, but the complexity blows up for each order of non-linearity(distortion) you try to calculate. The Volterra terms are supposed to be able to converge onto the non-linearity eventually, but because the complexity grows so fast, it only works in practice if you can describe most all the distortion in the first 3 or 4 orders.

The active feedback method is something that has been attempted a few times in loudspeakers, woofer mostly to mitigate issues of feedback latency. Servo subs operate on this principle, Philips had their own version incorporated into the electronics regulation.

Also, thanks for the images.

Do you like listening through them? If you like them enough to not actively seek out a new pair, they're at least good enough. If you feel like something is wrong every time you listen to them, and it's *really* bothering you, then they're not good.

TL;DR Do they satisfy you? y/n.

you dont care...? i wasnt going to say anything about it, just wondering

im not anyone else thats talked about this yet but i am an expert in this field. a scaling algorithm is simply the way the pixels are placed when an image changes its resolution, not its physical or even digital size. for example, when you zoom in, you have no rescaled it, only made it larger and more blurry because no processing has been done.

some algorithms from shittiest to better are:
nearest neighbor (definitely being used by that shit site that dude is making)
bilinear
bicubic
lanczos

just to name a few of the very common ones. the reasons for these are that, just like audio, people argue about what one actually does the best job resampling an image. from the ones i mentioned though, most would agree that lanczos is the best for upscaling, and the other driving factor here is resources used in order to perform the math. long gone are the days that a computer would actually have a hard time using lanczos over nearest neighbor, but like in a lot of damned fields today, shit lags behind and people are too lazy to update because it's "good enough" (yeah right)

another thing to take into consideration is whether youre upscaling or downscaling, which are two very different things. for upscaling, lanczos would most certainly be the best. for downscaling, you would find that bicubic used with certain parameters would be the mathematical best, but some argue that these other are actually more pleasing to the human eye. these studies were done, and the parameters given names by the ones to do it, catmull-rom for the former and mitchel-netravali for the latter. you can read about this here which is pretty ineresting
