Which inexpensive and useful technology items did you order from Aliexpress, eBay, DX, Banggood, Tinydeal etc. recently?

I have been trying to make money fixing up and selling broken vg consoles.

Lately I've bought Nintendo-sized safety bits (I misplaced the nice ones I had), A PSP replacement shell kit, cheap 3rd party SNES controllers (for the boards), and AV/Power cables for several systems (most things are missing cables when I get them).

If anyone is wondering, I'm technically making money, but it works out to way less than minimum wage.

Look for DSO138 on ebay. The kit is about $20. It requires some soldering of SMD parts (resistors), so you should be able to do this.
>>
>>52461314
Like I said, limping along.

In hindsight, it seems obvious, but there's a lot of competition and the collectability value of retro stuff makes the margins really slim.

A broken SNES/SFC that needs 8 hours work to restore is only worth $10-$20 more than an equivalent condition unit that works and has all the official accessories.

I bought a usb cable to charge my n3ds on the go/on my desk. It smells a bit weird though, but not as bad as the otg adapter that I just threw away the second I got it. The 3ds cable seems pretty sturdy and nice for a chink usb cable.

I hope the smell goes away if I put it near a radiator for a few days. I sorta don't like touching the thing if it smells.

I think it has to do with when the packages are shipped and how long they take to go through customs. Some sellers ship the same day and it actually leaves, other sellers may say they shipped it and it just sits around for a couple weeks before it actually gets underway.

The posters I ordered only took like a week, but the electical parts took like five weeks.

Yeah, you're right about the shipping. Probably also has to do with which province it comes out of. If it's from a major city or industrial area it's going to get processed quicker than from a smaller area and has to be at less intermediate points.

I can't help it! I work nights and sometimes I get bored with how quiet it is. You can only brows 4chan so long before you get bored and see how much shit you can buy that you didn't know you needed. On the bright side though, a lot of the stuff that I bought I would have purchased anyway since nearly all of the electronic crap I bought was to repair or replace old hardware.

I also bought one of these to hide in my moms apartment. She loves groot and has been wanting to make one.

Cree q5 flashlight-really well built and bright for $4
Jinhao 599- good fountain pen for $1.29.
Redcircle 600- decent rotring clone for $8
Orange pi- I could not get it to boot, so I just gave up after a bit. Should probably try again soon.
Trackpoint sample pack- ended up being official IBM/Lenovo, so they ended up being good
Android robot shaped USB OTG adapter-alright for $0.25. Part of the USB type c connector broke, but it still works.
10 piece Trackpoint caps- no where near as good as the legit ones. Rubber feels too soft, and some aren't cast properly. Buy real ones if you can.

You can set the time base to 500s max and it has 12 divisions on the display and you can scroll further sideways (you see that green thing on the top middle? It can scroll about times the area you see on the display, so it would be 4x12divisions x 500s/division=6,6h)
So it should be capable of capturing a signal that changes over some hours. But you can't save it afaik (it has a USB port, but I don't know if it's only for updates or can also send logged data over there)

It comes with a driver installation CD. But it seems like they put every driver for every piece hardware they make on the disc and Windows couldn't find the right driver to install so I had to dig through it all just to find the proper driver. There wasn't a separate exe setup file for each OS, so I'd assume if you have an Expresscard slot it'll be compatible.

LED light bulbs have to convert the 110-240V AC input voltage to a constant DC voltage and maintain constant current. So there is some kind of electrical circuit in them, and the cheap Chinese ones probably use shitty capacitors etc.
Another issue is cooling the LEDs. The metal part of the bulb, which is usually the heatsink, must be properly isolated from the mains voltage and of course the LED must not overheat, otherwise some parts may melt and cause a short and also a fire.

I've bought a TON of stuff from aliexpress and while I agree that the producs sold there are usually total shit, you can find terrific stuff there if you know what you're doing

I've bought 3 different SSD's from 3 different sellers, all working flawlessly

I bought a native 720p DLP projector, aside from some annoying and unsettling rattle in the fan at startup, it is pristine for the money I spent on it, it was around 180-200 $ compared to the 1200$ minimum I would need to fork up in Iceland for a decent projector

I bought 2 wireless keyboard/mouse packs, they're fine

I got a Teclast x98, and I love it, but I dont think this falls under the "inexpensive" category, although the teclast was relatively cheap compared to the tablets in local retail shops in Iceland

I literally just finished looking into buying a banana pi which is supposedly just as good as the rasberri pi, and even better in a few aspects. However the rasberri pi costs just as much so I dunno

My advice for those who wanna buy shit from aliexpress is sort by rating or number of orders rather than sorting by price
In addition, dont be to fixated on getting the absolute lowest price, it may come from China but it will still be shitty if its the cheapest thing you can find

I guess VGA (technically, DE-15) allows for more pins and thus easier POE-type stuff or extra data lines if you were in some bizarro-world where it made sense to roll your own solution.

Pretty sure they use it because its easier for the teachers.
On the walls next to the teachers desk there is a ethernet port to plug the cable then it runs through the wall all the way to a projector where it's connected by VGA. I could probably make my own but fuck it, it's one buck.
>>

>I guess VGA (technically, DE-15) allows for more pins and thus easier POE-type stuff or extra data lines if you were in some bizarro-world where it made sense to roll your own solution.
It's not for Ethernet over VGA but for VGA over Ethernet.
>>
>>52467888

oh wow. I thought it would be the other way around.

Are you a TA or teacher or something? Wouldn't expect they'd let a student use the projectors otherwise.

Also seems a bit strange as presumably you'd need adapters at both ends (not aware of any laptops that do VGA over ethernet natively, jej). I guess this way you can just buy a shit-ton of cat 5e in bulk and maybe get some cost savings that way.

>>
>>52468156

Fellow cheap SSD: I get 115 MB/s with that code.

system still boots fast so I don't really care. at a certain point I would think I may be bottlenecked by the core2duo and the sata 2 chipset.
>>
>>52462765
Does it support TX? Looking for a cheap transmitter.
>>
>>52468204

update: goes up to ~200 MB/s when I decrease the block size to 64k, 1024 records, ~300 MB/s with 4k, 4096 records. Upping it to 4k, 409600 records (1.7 GB) and I'm back at ~117 MB/s, so that's probably about the steady state.

Looks like it can in fact max out my SATA II chipset when the data is small enough to fit entirely into cache, and only gets cucked by the write bottleneck on large writes. Sequential read is next on the list of things to test

Heh, I have four of those (Dell mini 910) sitting around the house. The one that only came with an 8Gb HDD was a tight squeeze but the others shipped with 16 Gb and they're only about 75% full.

I mostly set them up with 16 bit emulators + USB gamepads etc and give them away to little cousins/charity.

I found one Samsung 32Gb drive for my personal machine for $30. The holes were in the wrong spacing so it didn't work OOTB but some careful dremeling fixed that.

The economics on those things suck because there were only ever like 2-3 laptops that used that bullshit PATA-over-PCIE interface, so the supply's low. I recommend just getting a $20 64 Gb MicroSD and leaving it in the laptop permanently. If you're adventurous you can try soldering a mini pci socket over the unpopulated WWAN slot and seeing if a general, run-of-the mill pci SSD will work there (more/cheaper options)

I ordered some <= $5 wired and wireless mice off ebay.

The cheapest wired mice (black on top, sorta see through on the sides, ~$1.59) work great.

The absolute cheapest wireless mice (~$2) suck, do not buy. Those are the slim, super plasticy ones. The sensor sucks.

There are some good options at the ~$3-$5 level. There's one that's a full size mouse with thumb buttons that's pretty nice, and a slightly more expensive slim mouse that comes in two-tone trim (I usually choose the black and green option).

I have played a bit of half life and used GIMP with these, but I'm not a hardcore CSGO autist or legit_photoshop_memer so I can't really compare them for those *cough* PLACEBO *cough* uses. Just feels like a mouse to me desu

A replacement keyboard for my laptop, replacement fan, a couple of Delta screamers to play around with, a bunch of LED/LED tape, a remote RBG controller for an RGB LED tape, copper heatsinks for VRMs... That's it of the top of my head for the cheap stuff. I did buy a Win8.1 tablet that actual runs great (and it's been over a year) and an Android phone, which gets uncomfortably hot when charging, but otherwise runs very well.

Don't. Onda is pretty much the only one worth anything, and even then you have to trawl the net for russian reviews where the disassemble the shit to see how's the build quality etc.

it's a knock off znaps.
>>52473480
don't, buy a tablet with a x5 or x7 atom, they have much better graphics for your chinese cartoons.

Got this for 3 bucks, ordered another one.

I use it when camping with friends. They were impressed with the quality, that beats their shitty smartphones flashlights.

I was going to do that and then I realized I'm retarded and never touched a soldering kit in my life
I rather experiment on something less important than a populated working mainboard...

Some sellers say 300, 600 or even 1200.

Just try to get one on the 3 bucks price range with a lot of sales on ebay. I recall some seller saying on the item description that he only sold originals from Cree, those are the one you should get.

You can see the light at 40-50m in the mountain at night, pretty good.

what version of sata are your PCs running? If they are running sata2, this may be the bottleneck rather than the ssd.

Mine is a Thinkpad x200, so SATA 2. SATA 2 maxes out at 3 Gbits/s which works out to ~ 375 MBytes/s . Hence why I said >>52468256 that it maxes out (well, not quite) the SATA II chipset when data fits into cache but larger files are bottlenecked by the steady state write speed which seems to be a little over ~110 MB/s.

I tried switching it around a bit and using dd to read from testfile -> /dev/null and got a very suspicious 2.0 GB/s result which I don't think can be correct.

Just found the linux benchmark utility I used to use -
 sudo apt-get install iozone3
