Most terminal emulators support semi-transparency. That anon is using openbox, so his terminal is probably lxterminal.
So just google "lxterminal transparency" or "XXX transparency" for whatever terminal emulator you're currently using. Type "echo $TERM" into your terminal to figure out what you're using.

Yeah, once you download it make an empty file called .Xresources in your home directory and modify like so. You can change all the colours and add transparency, that's all I did to mine. Also URxvt.scrollBar: false makes it a lot cleaner.

Pacman only removes config files if you specifically type -Rsc, and in the case of overwriting configs, it always makes a backup with the extension .pacsave.
