i tried this on my Xeon E5 and holy shit
>over clocked by 30%
>idle temp: 40°C
>running 3 vm: 55°C
>intense color correcting in AE: 60°C
I'm going to try this on my Quadro, I'll post results later

This is how you do it:
>apply thermal paste on CPU
>place a penny on the CPU
>apply more thermal paste until the penny is completely covered
>Install heat sink
the penny increases the amount of thermal paste between the CPU and heat sink
heat conducts better this way
the physics behind this is a little complicated
as volume(V) increases, density(p) will decrease and heat capacity(C) will increase
heres the wiki page on it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_capacity#Specific_heat_capacity

Yeah, and then pressure will crack the die. Fuck you.

don't forget to find some high fluoride toothpaste instead of your usual TIM

what pressure?
just dont screw the heat sink in so tight
>>
>>52456632
>>52456615
>>52456635
also remember to use a credit card to smooth out the surface of the penny

stfu ho

can't wait for tomorrow to see "hey guys someone on /g/ told me to do this with a penny to my CPU i fucking hate y'all the CPU is broken and dad grounded me for 6 months"
>>
>>52456678
that will only happen if the heatsink is installed too tight
>>
Have you guys tried making crystals with amonia and bleach?
>>
the copper from the peny and the chemicals in the thermal paste will release oxide of nitrogen

this makes laughing gas dont try it
>>
>>52456703
i did this in my backyard so the gas wasnt a problem
>>52456702
yeah it worked out well
>>
>>52456566
im going to upload the whole process in a sec
just so you guys know its not a joke
>>

Wut, I thougth you cant overclock xeons
>>
>>52456825
it can be overclocked by increasing FSB frequency
>>
>>52456825
depends whether or not they're unlocked like every other Intel cpu (although recently it's been revealed that you can in fact raise BCLK on locked cpus)

i finished filming the tutorial, uploading in a sec

I just tried this. My computer doesn't turn on anymore, I'm posting this from my phone.

What do I do?

fucking reddit memes on my /g/ i swear

have you ever though about how this image has probably killed a non-zero amount of people?

Yeah that's not how heat transfer works.
There's no advantage to going CPU -> Paste -> Penny -> Paste -> Heatsink over CPU -> Paste -> Heatsink.

the purpose of the penny is to increase the volume of the paste, higher volume would allow more heat to be absorbed and transferred, the surface area also increases
>>
Using a very thin layer of a bronze plate between two layers of thermal paste, is something techs actually do in laptops when the distance between a cpu or gpu and the heatsink is bigger than what it's supposed to be. Replacing thermal pads with this setup (2 layers of paste, bronze plate) is common as well.

>>

>is to increase the volume of the paste
Increasing the volume of the paste does nothing.
Thermal paste has good thermal conductivity, but it's still a nonzero amount of thermal resistance.
The optimal amount of thermal paste is the minimum amount needed to cover the surface. Anything more than that decreases efficiency.

I sure hope this is a pre-1980s penny m80
>>
>>52461763
nvm that redneck video is shit. he threw water on it at the end and his definition of explode is just the zinc breaking out of the cooper shell. meh.

this on is better.
imo just leave out the penny and put sugar and potato cholrate on the cpu then mash the heat sink on top.

This
>>
>>52461802
This. Ideally you would use no paste. All it does is fill in tiny irregularities in the surfaces to create optimal heat transfer.

oh man... it still makes me laugh to this day
