Last one died, time for new one.

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I want to buy new Thinkpad. Coming from X60s, I have three options:

X201, T61 or T400

Requirements? Ability to handle Linux nicely, relatively small (14" screen is the biggest I want). It will be used to programming, watching chinese cartoons and movies, nothing special.
Which one?
>>
>>52455489
x201 is the obvious choice, t400 if you don't have much $ and i'd pass on the t61 since you have to deal with nvidia shitting up and expensive ddr2 ram.
>>
they keyboard on the T420, has to be one of the best keyboards lenovo has ever made, as it's not as mushy as the keyboards on my T400 and T61, and it's just so comfy to type on.
>>
>>52455684
ok, what about GPU in X201? isn't it the slowest piece of hardware in there?

Are thinkpad docking stations compatible with other models or is it a specific docking station for each one? Like if i get a x60 that comes with a dock will that dock work with a x220 or a t400 etc?
>>
anyone see any good deals on a t420 with nvidia?
>>
>>52455968
If the other two have discrete graphic then ya, slowest of the three, but it still able to play your 1080p chinese cartoons just fine.
>>
hey tpg

what's the word on the x250?

It looks fantastic and packs some serious hardware (up to i7, 16 gigs of ram, 256GB solid state drive) and a 1080p display with touch, but it's quite expensive.

I'm looking to upgrade from my e420s and am looking for something 13 inch or smaller for daily use. The form factor of the x250 is what I'm shooting for.

would the max spec versions of the x250 it be worth buying for 2k Canadian vs upgrading an x201?
>>
Just how atrocious is the screen res on a x200 Tablet? I'm looking at https://ithaca.craigslist.org/sys/5399447981.html.

I've got a piece of shit android tablet with the same sceen res but it's 7", and I'm finding it hard to imagine whether or not if it will be a pain in the ass to try and take notes on it.
>>
>>52456402
Depends.

What do you plan on doing with it, and how much would you be sinking into upgrading your X201? Do you really need the extra bells and whistles the X250 has over an X201?

It's a nice looking computer, but damn I wish they kept older style keyboards.

update on Amazon T420 9 cell 7800mah no reviews chink battery

quad core 8 gigs of ram on "balanced" power setting is seeing 6+ hours of battery life, 7+ on power saver. Battery kicks ass for $33 shipped. I kind of want to crack it open to see if they really used Samsung cells, but based off performance I believe them. if you need a 9 cell get this one /shill
>>

Nope, X60 dock station is compatible with X60s, X61 and X61s (don't know if there are any more) and the same is with X220.

>Tfw already placed an order with Lenovo for a 9 cell battery
Dammit.
Still, might get another one if they're that cheap.
>>
>>52456751
>how much would you be sinking into upgrading your X201?
I've found an x201 with 4 gigs of ram and a sup-par HDD so I'd probably just be looking into upgrading it to 8 and buying an SSD for it.

My aim is only really to future proof the thing. Need something to handle at least 4 more years of uni (systems/software eng). Having the room for upgrades is a nice thing about the x201, but I think the limiting factor will end up being the processor or the lack of gpu anyway.

Just trying to figure out the tradeoff between being able to fix it (or buy spare parts) if it breaks, or if I want to put my money straight into the x250 that'll be less likely to break and will have a better warranty covering it in case it does.

I have a small TV that I want to use as a second monitor for my ThinkPad T420. The TV has connections for HDMI and VGA. I only have a HDMI cable at the moment.

What should I do: buy a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, buy a DisplayPort to HDMI cable, or buy a VGA cable? Or something else I'm not thinking about?

Oh boy, do I regret picking the T430 with Nvidia graphics.
So I've using my T430 for a few weeks now with an external monitor connected through VGA, while waiting for a miniDisplayport->HDMI cable to arrive.
Today it arrived and after installing it I figured out that the miniDisplayport is hardwired to the Nvidia chip and so I can't connect my external monitor to it unless i enable the nvidia gpu.

That leaves me with two options:
1) Use "integrated only" option from BIOS and use the VGA port which produces a lot of noise and sub-par quality image. That way I'll be a bit more battery efficient when going mobile.
2) Use "optimus" and go through the hassle of configuring bumblebee which will still affect my battery life and temperatures to the worse.

Any advice/other options for me /g/ ?

Would rather have a T430 or Dell E6330.

>>52457667
You could put a quadcore i7 onto a T430 or T420 but you'll be limited by its cooling abilities, no 's' model because they come with a dualcore i7 soldiered, no way out of that, same with X series.

W550s is the next best 'slim' laptop, I don't know of other laptops which support a quadcore and has cooling for it.

Right now I have a Clevo W370ST breathing its last breaths (broken hinges, overheats, power supply is pic related, you don't even want to see the power jack).

I need to replace this, and I think the best solution is to have a proper dedicated desktop for gaming/etc and a shittier laptop for work/movies in bed with the gf/dwarf fortress/excel/learning programming/roguelikes.

Are there any thinkpads out there that aren't too utilitarian-looking, are 15'' or so with 1920x1080 screens, are durable and can run excel/play movies? I looked through the wiki and it sounds like a "new" one would fit the bill, but I'm worried about the build being too low quality.

TL;DR

Thinking of getting a thinkpad. Want it to have a decent screen resolution and be able to run simple games, excel, and movies. Want it to not look too utilitarian. Worried about low build quality in models that fit my wants.

You'd probably be much better off with an x2**. AMD processors in mobile devices is just asking for trouble. Also with X2**, you get better build quality, as the case of the X120e is plastic instead, among many other things.

Hey guys, just got an X220, and it's 95% perfect.
The only problem is, there is high pitched whine coming from it from somewhere on the underside. I don't know it's from the CPU area or if it's the hard drive. It fluctuates in frequency and I can hear the same noise in headphones through the audio jack, which leads me to believe it's coil whine of some sort. Is this a common problem? Can it be fixed?

I know for a fact that it's not fan whine, because I reduced the fan to zero and could still hear it.

>>
hey guys im thinking of getting a brand new w541 listed for 300, should I do it.
>>
>>52467540
Well I can get two other w510s with i7s. One with half the cost, the other almost the same. So the later is out.

Then there is the x230, which has a similar price. Half the storage and ram, but with a docking station. Can't say that's a good trade off.

Kind of going for either the w510 with the hybrid drive for 235, or the x220 for 395. Quite a big difference. Just not sure how often I would use the touchscreen, or if I need it.

Appreciate your input.

Not like I ever go to the edges too much anyways. But you make it sound just as good, if not better. Does the whole computer work well with image editing software?

It's still a bit of a bother because the location varies depending on height, so a lot of the time I'll drag a window when I meant to click the title bar or I'll drag one of Photoshop's tools to the side when I meant to open it instead. A little annoying, but I think it's worth it.

I've run both Photoshop and Manga Studio on it and they both run great. I've even run Manga Studio AND streaming software on it to stream the art I was working on, and aside from becoming hot on my lap, it worked just fine.

That's the tradeoff, though honestly the dedicated GPU hasn't made a huge difference to me using my T420.

If you want to use the touchscreen, then the extra price for the tablet model makes sense. I mean, I literally bought mine just for the tablet, as I already had a T420, and I think it was pretty much worth it. The only downsides are a slightly odd form factor and the rubber nubs for the screen to lock into being a bit fragile. (The one I bought was listed as having minor damage on Ebay because it was missing one.) It's been hugely handy in doing digital art stuff, so I'd say if you make use of it, go ahead.

Just keep XP, if you want too. Since it is not going to be connected to the internet anyways, there is no chance of the seller spying on you, so what's the problem? (Besides the keyloggers logfile filling your hdd, while waiting for an internet connection that will never happen).
