I'm on the fence about buying an SSD. How much of a difference in load times does it make? 100$ is a lot to spend to get 20 second boot times vs 1 minute boot times. If I get the little 250GB one, I'd probably be putting my OS's and some programs like photoshop on it. Will that really save me significant amounts of time? I'm a poorfag, so I have some skepticism as to whether the difference is worth it, but I'm open to being sold on the idea.

>Will that really save me significant amounts of time?
absolutely. remember how a few years ago the best upgrade you could make was RAM? now it's the ssd. get one, you won't regret it.
it makes the entire system faster and more stable, it's not just boot times. modern ssds are more reliable and have a higher life expectancy than hdds, even samsungs cheaper drives come with 5 years warranty (the more expensive ones come with 10 years).

OLED burns waaaay more then plasma.

I'm a TV salesmen. We get returns all the time on LG and Samsung OLED tvs for burning. Its a problem with light blue and darker yellow staying on the screen.

I honestly don't know what I want to get.Was thinking about getting a 4790k because I can get one for $80. But the only thing I would use the extra threads for would be encoding which I don't do enough to bother with more than my i5.

more than 8gb ram is lost on my needs.

I originally had 2xr9 290s. One went bad so I now have the r9 390 they sent me as RMA and don't wish to bother with the noise/heat/stutter of xfire again.

I have more than enough storage space.

I'm happy with my Fractal R5 case.
>>52448177
SSDs speed up everything. Boot times are just a benefit. Game load times are drastically reduced as well.

Thing is that the old computer's hardware, a Dell Optiplex 390, gave a last error message about some heating issue. There was also some kind of graphic error in Mass Effect 3; the arrows in the weapon menu disappeared. Then the 3 & 4 lights at the front lighted up when I tried to start it.

The other thing is that that HDD is pretty much My Life: The Last Three Years. And it would be a bitch to lose all those browser-bookmarks etc. So how do I "transplant" the essentials to a new HDD running on Windows 7 64 bit?

>>
>>52465914
Minimum means everything in a "standard" set up. 1 CPU, 1 or 2 HDDs, the mobo, RAM and maybe a couple fans/lights. Chances are though what you have is a prebuilt and as such the PSU is probably shit and not even 80+ rated. That said, a GT 610 uses <35w of power, as it runs directly off PCIe power. So it should be more than doable, but I would really recommend getting a reputable brand of PSU, even at the same ballpark wattage. Just make sure whatever you get is 80+ bronze rated.

want to play muh games at 1080p, what's a decent card to upgrade to? I'm poor and in nz so AMD is preferred
>>
>>52466167
Really depends on what games you plan on playing. But given a $150-$200 budget I would go with a GTX 960 or r9 380. If you're not a stranger to buying used and spending a little bit more, you might be able to score a 290x or GTX 970 within the $200-$250 price range.
>>
>>52466208
Yeh I'd probably go for a 290x then, but a few people told me it was overkill for sub 1440p. The only overly intensive thing I plan on playing would be like Star Citizen when it comes out eventually
>>
>>52466236
In that case you really don't need anything more than a r7 270x or GTX 950.

No, anon
Buy an MSI Lightning, a Gigabyte Waterforce, an EVGA Classy, a ASUS STRIX, or a Palit, but do NOT buy that overpriced "binned" POS. The only thing you're paying for is a chance of having a better overclocking card AND IT'S NOT EVEN A GUARANTEE SINCE REGULAR OVERCLOCKING ON MAXWELL AND ASIC QUALITY DO NOT HAVE A DIRECT RELATIONSHIP.
It's pretty much well known that the Kingpin is a failure of a card, an overpriced marketing scheme to build hype around the EVGA brand that has fallen on its face due to its extreme pricing.
Literally any 980Ti could give you the same results as a Kingpin, but for hundreds less.

If you want a water-cooled card, just buy a Gigabyte Waterforce, since it's the only card that cools the VRMs and RAM using an extended copper piping on the waterblock. The other hybrid AIOs cool theirs with a fan.

I guess I could use some RAM and more storage since I`ve started to edit videos.

I`m also open to other suggestions.

I play a shitload of CS but I don't want to fall for the 122hz meme, are these monitors worth the money if it's not only for gaming?

Also, chair suggestions? I spend all my day working from home, but dont' really want anything fancy.

Okay, thanks for the warning about the Kingpin. However, I'd still like to know if a single 980 Ti would be better than the 2 SLI'D 970s I already have. I know I'd get more VRAM, but that's not that important to me since I don't have a 2.5K or 4k monitor. I'm only concerned about hitting 144fps on anything I use.

>a single 980 Ti would be better than the 2 SLI'D 970
No, it's not better in the worst case scenario. Two 970s or 390s will beat a 980Ti when running in SLI/Crossfire. BUT, there are a lot of games that don't allow multicard utilization, which means that you're running a single 970 for that game. A 980 Ti will give you consistent performance no matter what title or engine the game runs on. Multi-card set-ups are a crap shoot.

I'm aware of the SLI optimization issue. Is there a single card on the market that can match or exceed two SLI'd 970s? The only thing I could think of would be a Titan X or Z. Quaddros and Teslas are out of the question because a single high end model would be worth more than my entire rig.

I didn't want to make my own thread but hey guys i'm wondering if any of you know about this new thing, it seems it's been around since june 2015 but i only just got it recently and news websites / computer tech sites etc have updated about the story in the last day or two.

I have an icon in my tray at the bottom right called get windows 10. It says i can upgrade to w10 for free.

I have no interest in upgrading but i'm not adverse to it. I read it can delete your programs if it thinks they are dangerous though, games and things?

Should i remove this gwx.exe to stop it from displaying the annoying update icon or should i just update for free when it comes in july?

Many thanks in advance /g/

I've been thinking of getting a 27" 1440p Freesnyc IPS monitor, but I read that the panels are shit and you have a 75% chance of getting a shit one.

Should I go for it or get a 27" TN panel instead? Or keep my current monitor and add a second 24" Freesync monitor?

Fellow 4790k and 780 owner here.

I agree with >>52450813
The 780 isn't that good because NV decided to gimp on the memory giving it 3GB rather than 4GB surprise surprise. Probably doesn't need saying but top end cards are not worth how much extra you have to pay.

Also I'm looking at getting a new Fury this year and possibly shrinking the whole machine into a 250D if it's possible.

I am greatly considering getting a 4k monitor to watch 4k blurays on but apparently gtx 970s won't have HDCP 2.2 compliancy.
Is it even worth upgrading to 4k monitors yet since 4k blu rays aren't out yet?
Should I get a 4k monitor and upgrade my graphics card to one with 2.2 compliancy?
Should I just buy a 4k blu ray player for viewing and hope makemkv can rip my blu rays anyway?

I'm wondering whether or not the 5820k's 28 lanes will support dual big Polaris? The PCIe 3.0 x16 can but not sure about the x8.

Would I need to go 5930k for Dual x16?

does your ass clench up thinking about whether or not intel will microcode away the overclocking on non-k cpus?
>>
>>52469976
I'll take that as a "I don't know.". However you need not worry as the answer is no due to a new interconnect being used to replace xDMA PCIe bandwidth bottleneck.

Also, why do you not enjoy a more powerful system?

Cluess about electricity, when choosing a psu, is the number that's under 12V should be enough to cover a gpu's power drain? On this random image for example it's 600 so it could handle a R 390s need for 346 W or two 980s 257 W. Am I right?

Thanks for the input. My main concern is the CPU. Feels weird still having a 5 year-old component still sitting on my PC, but maybe that's my inner ricer speaking.

I'll be upgrading my case tomorrow (Corsair 230T to Fractal Design R5) and will just think about buying a fancy new unlocked CPU later in the year. Not looking forward to buying a new mobo and DDR4 RAM to accompany it though.

I want to upgrade my GPU, I was thinking GTX 960, I'd have to replace my psu to be safe with 380. But then when I started thinking about that, I could as well get a R9 290 for the same price, pretty much, and yeah, that would be a quite a bit more powerful card, but then also much older. Would that be a good idea or should I not bother and go for cheapest option being 960 and no psu replacement?
I would be replacing that around next year when the dust settles after the pascal and stuff.

I'd say upgrade your CPU, but that's just me.
