Remember that Alpine is not a GNU/Linux distro, but a Linux distro.

Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Dual-boot Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about Linux)
4) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

is there a compositor that will let you specify which windows should be unredirected? I've figured out how to use --unredir-if-possible with compton, but I want to game maximized instead of fullscreen, so I can see i3bar on the bottom.

if that's somehow not possible, forgive me, I'm very new to linux.

SELinux or RBAC?

I'm doing SELinux right now because I'm used to systems with it and don't really want to go to the effort of configuring RBAC.

On the other hand, RBAC is part of GRsecurity and SELinux was authored by the NSA and is complicated enough that backdoors could easily go unnoticed.

Should I bother?
>>
>>52446261
Just use the industry standard: SELinux. You can check the source code.
>>
>>52446234
Suicide Linux.
>>
>>52446276
That's what I was thinking. And in my googling I found an argument that the NSA wouldn't backdoor something published under their own name, they'd make fake github personalities to insert backdoors so that if they are discovered they can't be traced.

I think that's flawed because the NSA doesn't give a shit if people know they're spying and people don't give a shit about being spied on, but I'm willing to accept SELinux as secure anyway.
>>
>>52446253
They did jokingly say they want to make a systemdOS.Knowing leo he will do it and abandon it after 6 months when i looks like its going to make it.
Just like all his other projects.

You dont want a SINGLE process responsibly for the entire os. Plus they've changed code specifically for government compatibility.

I did both of these, one after the other, in my linux admin class.
It broke the everything.
I asked the instructor for the recovery disc so I could start over. He told me no, I should fix it.
So I spent tree days doing a directory-by-directory comparison of my broken server with the functional workstation, correcting ownership and permissions.
I was finishing up and mostly okay when he asked what was taking me so long. I told him and he cussed me out for not telling him exactly what I did sooner so that I could reinstall.

I swear I added Firefox to the list of ignored packages in pacman.conf and checked the packages I was updating today but it still went past and now I'm stuck with the shitty gtk3 file selector with no thumbnail viewer again. The only way I was able to downgrade last time was by completely recompiling the old version against the newer libraries, and that was a huge pain.
If I'm going to have to go through that shit again, would it just benefit me if I tried switching to Gentoo, or is there a good alternative to Firefox that supports gtk2 I could use instead?

Never actually tried to dual-boot before, but I can try to help.

First off, try making a Virtual Machine first. Get VMware on that windows seven machine.

If you're not into that, I imagine it goes something like this.

> boot into livecd
> gdisk or gparted, whatever floats your boat
> shrink wangblows partition
> start ubuntu installer
> under partitioning config, select the empty partition you just made, don't fuck with the windows shit
> installation proceeds as normal

I imagine there's some bootloader configuration that needs to get done but as I said I've never tried before.

Google around, there are hundreds of guides.

Alright guys I'm a bit worried about this…

First thing besides replacing the firmware on the BIOS with coreboot+seaBIOS. I haven't tried that yet.

Second off I already check out everything about Gentoo with chromebooks and I'm still paranoid about it compared to traditional desktop, due to google bullshit kernel on this laptop(linux-chrome).

Third thing I'm also need help with is preparing and backup in my crouton chroot(Xubuntu) and making sure in the future to transferred over Gentoo.

Hey flt, I have two machines running linux in my lab setup. The machine I use the most is a stationary driving two displays, and my laptop driving a third display as well as the built in display. There's a program called synergy that lets you share one mouse and keyboard between multiple computers, even if they're not running the same operating system. The mouse will move from screen to screen, once it's properly configured, just like it would on a multi-monitor set up.

However, the computers do not recognize each other's displays as displays, and as such you can't drag windows back and forth. The operating systems and all of the things running on them will still be separate.

You might be able to connect to a second X session on one computer from the other via VNC and have two X sessions on the same computer visible at once and sharing a mouse and keyboard, but you still wouldn't be able to drag windows back and forth. I don't know of any software that you could use to achieve that.
>>
I'm thinking about trying Arch, I remember it being pretty ghetto a couple years ago, though.

I've run gentoo in the past but I want something with reasonable install procedures. I'm used to ubuntu based stuff right now. Can't really say I have a compelling reason to try something else other than to scratch an itch, know what I mean?

So, what should I do?
>>
>>52450103

That sounds like what I was after.

>However, the computers do not recognize each other's displays as displays, and as such you can't drag windows back and forth. The operating systems and all of the things running on them will still be separate.

True, and anything else would be bad since they're different environments anyways. I only use the laptop to display documentation so I think your alternative works well.

thanks anon
>>
>>52450103
>>52450127

Also, realized I can just open an ssh session on my laptop to my working machine if I want to access that environment giving me everything apart from dragging windows. Noice

major de's like gnome3 and kde have proper multi monitor support
among those more lightweight ones MATE is the way to go (XFCE's multi monitor support is nigger) since it's a fork of gnome 2, and works okay.

From tiling WM i know of, i3 was sort of created with multi-monitor setups in mind, and yes they work sort of okay though you have to configure it first.

Pick whatever distro you like, but guessing from the amount of displays you're running a discrete GPU, and that's always a problem on Linux. So *buntu LTS or Mint, since they require the least amount of fucking around with proprietary GPU drivers.
>>

I'm paraphrasing a sentiment from X years ago.

Since you seem to want articulately expressed coherent thoughts, on goddam 4chan of all places, here:

Ghetto refers to a lack of organization within an organization in doing the things they are organized to do. Support is ramshackle at best, consisting of a patchwork mess that can barely be called a wiki. And you will need support because it would be an understatement to say that packages are not well curated. In short, a complete lack of quality and completely dependent on the willingness of the user to make it work. See also "Jury Rigged", "Nigger Rigged", "Good enough for government work"

Mostly asspulls, in particularly visible due to the fact that a whole lot of drama hasn't resulted in much extra work being done on better systemd forks or openrc or whatever.

I'm sure some also had good arguments at some point, but eh, that's not the usual thing that you hear.

I got ballsdeep and deleted Windows and replaced it with GNU/Linux about 6 months ago.

I was so pissed about Windows, it felt like shit and it's just not good.

With GNU/Linux I do have much problems but it's always a good feeling when you solved it.

So learning GNU/Linux is pain and fun.

I can recommend it highly to everyone.

I love that feeling of solving a problem, and linux always offers that in droves. Unless you can't find a solution. It's one of the reasons I was fond of Gentoo back in the day, problems popped up all the time and you'd have this nice solid feeling of doing something even if you're just watching a bunch of compiles run.

Does at least one mpd client have a decent queue? You know, like in cmus or foobar2000, you put a song in there it plays right after that, and then returns to playing from the place it left off/goes on through the playlist from the last song in the queue.
I often make prebuilt playlists and play them in order, and then like to inserting other songs in the middle of it depending on the mood. foobar was ideal for that, because I could make two parallel playlists, make one of these for some particular artist, another for random stuff I feel like listening to, and jump between with them with the queue with relatively little problem. cmus was harder because it always returned to the same place in the playlist after it finished with the queue, which is not always what I wanted. On the other hand, mpd at the moment (tried working with mpc and ncmpcpp) seems to have no easy queue functionality that would allow such behaviour, priorities being theoretically powerful but really unwieldy and ignored in mpc.
The point is, I think of building a custom script that would create such a functionality through hacks with priorities, and I need to know if I missed something or there is already an alternative, to make sure I'm not reinveinting the bicycle.
Any help?

Because that could involve downloading gigabytes of data you already have locally. It's stupid that there's not a nice option to just force repo download, but that's apt for you.

Like >>52453204 says, remove the source (by commenting it out or deleting the line).
You could mount it, but since the ISO it's looking for is from September the packages are probably already out of date, so you may as well just download from the repos

Unless you want to come across this very same problem every time you try to install something else that is on that USB drive and have to remount again,
then you should just remove the DVD from /etc/apt/sources.list

I believe the logic behind leaving it there is you're meant to use the netinstall ISO if you want to download the latest packages, and you use the full ISO if you want to offline install everything from the DVDs.

>>52453538
I can guarantee this is going to bite you again if you don't comment out the DVD source.

left: a real terminal, note that it's not a full computer, it has a screen and keyboard, but basically nothing else, it displays information from another machine (a mainframe) over some kind of network

I mean, as long as you don't fuck around with root too much etc. Just using it a DE/Tiling WM and programming on it. I only really use the CLI to install and update packages.

I don't understand Unix systems at all (been using windows all my life) and I've had had zero issues for the 3 months I've had it installed, but I'm kind of hesitant to put any investment because I'm dreading that when it breaks and I can't fix it.

Arch used to be more unstable because settings and configs of all sorts would reset after upgrades. Arch has gotten better at merging settings, so it's more stable now.
