Hey /g/ just booted ubuntu on my old pc since you guys always talked about how good linux was. Anything I should expect and watch out for?
>in b4 ubuntu isnt a good linux version
unity lmfao
Haven't gotten screenshots to work?

Get a good distro son
>Ubuntu
Congrats on installing a botnet, linuxcuck
>>52444885
I wanted to show my machine

Ok, I looked up what a botnet is and im freaking out. Have the other computers in my home been infected? I got the iso off the official ubuntu site how could it contain a botnet?
>>52444994
You must be new
They are trolling you
It just sends data to another server. Just like google chrome or a smartphone.
Saying a botnet is a meme here
>>52445037
Thank you. I was worried. I thought the "worksafe" boards would be actually helpful.
>Anything I should expect and watch out for?
no. just go to codeacademy and do the tutorials for the CLI, and i'd recommend also supplementing it with reading "the linux command line" which is free online.
in a couple months, or whenever you're comfortable, install arch over it and start actually enjoying your operating system.
>install gentoo
use xubuntu instead of straight ubuntu, anon. Unity is far too slow for an old pc like that.
>>52445235
Its not as bad as it looks
Intel core 2 duo 3.2 ghz
4gb ddr3 ram 1066 mhz
Ati Radeon Hd 4350
>>52445110
Watch out for? Well, install your fucking graphics card driver first. AMD drivers are shit (on Windows AND Linux) so good luck. Ubuntu might have a hardware drivers panel entry that might let you install it easily.
After that, it's really up to what you want to use the system for. Ubuntu is essentially the most productive Linux distro, as far as making it easy to do useful things with your PC rather than spend all your time fucking with OS settings and whatnot.
>>52445110
what are all the drivers you have to install? not op, but planning on installing ubuntu on an old pc as well and would like to know what to expect.

meant to quote >>52445833
>>52445494
lol, that's not bad at all.
>>52446039
99% of the drivers are built into the Linux Kernel. Likely the only thing you'll need to install is your AMD or NVIDIA proprietary driver for video, and that only if you care about 3D performance.
>>52445494
the only way the inspiron 530 could have that kind of specs is if someone replaced the mobo, cpu and memory. At that point it's not even a 530 anymore.
this thread is overflowing with cringe
>>52446193
How so? The guy is experimenting with OSes, I gave him some good advice, and another anon learned too. Isn't that the ideal concept of /g/?
>>52444843
watch out closely for any signs of your computer wanting to touch you inappropriately
>>52446260
>implying it would be inappropriate.

Funniest thing ive heard all day.
>>52446143
Original processor
>>52446297
Says the guy that literally just shitposts for all of his waking hours
>>52446311
The E2160 is a Pentium clocked at 1.8ghz. A 3.2ghz C2D is not the original CPU.
OP here.
I got tired of ubuntu being slow and not loading steam, so I'm trying lubuntu tomarrow. Gonna play some games on my winpc and deal with it tomarrow.
>>52446336
I dont remember the exact clock it was a guess i just know it was 3.x
>>52446353
>slow
Did you even install it to your hard drive, or are you running it off the live CD still?
>>52446393
Usb flash drive
The intent was to have a pocket steam mahine
>>52446407
Guess we found out why it's slow... I'm out.
>>52446407
>Running Ubuntu off a flash drive
>Probably USB 2
top fucking kek no wonder it was slow
use something like lupu puppy that's meant to be run off a flash drive
>>52446314
>>52446407
That's fucking stupid, you're much better off just putting your games and a steam installer onto the flash drive.
