Chromebook is a bad idea for this particular case since it would be used to boot live Linux distros.
Any Chromebook, even the x86 ones, need some tinkering (if even possible at all) to boot external media.

In all seriousness I'd get an Elitebook from eBay. I've owned like 3 Elitebooks with i5 CPUs and they're bretty gud. They're like $200 from business surplus sellers and they're plenty fast. The body is made of aluminum and the keys are coated with some shit so none of it gets shiny. They also have excellent Linux compatibility.

All these recommendations aren't really much cheaper than a used Mac. I looked at the oldest Mac on the list, MacBook 13-inch, Core 2 Duo, Late 2009 and I can get it for €50 more than the Dell (€250). I think I'll go with that since she already has an iMac at home.

The national high school finals in Finland are migrating to a digital system during the next 5 or so years using their own shitty Linux live distro, so a lot of high schools here do the tests with that same system to prepare.
