Upgrades
>Xeon E3 1240v2

Convince me not to get another one for that price.

I fucking hate HP for not making an affordable 8-12 bay version of this.
>>
>>52433881
How hot does it run?
>>
>>52434112
Idle between 40-45 and under full load it peaks to 85ish until the system fan takes over and lowers it to 70C.

Been converting for 12+ hours on all cores and it hasnt exceeded 70C except right before the system fan kicks in.
>>
>>52433881
Man! It' the thing.
> Convince me not to get another one
There's no alternatives, but I found some cons.
1) BIOS, no UEFI. Come on, HP.
2) There's no easy way to use an AHCI SATA mode w/o RAID and boot from a 'optical drive' SSD. Some guy suggested to write /boot to a microSD and boot from it.
2.1) Therefore, no rEFInd, I think I'll go with GRUB. Anyway, still wainitng for SSD.

I have a question, tho. Do I need some special magic HP $199 switch to use a LAN Teaming?
>>

That's what I did. Not a great solution but its been working for 8 months. Makes reinstalling a bit more complicated though.

>I have a question, tho. Do I need some special magic HP $199 switch to use a LAN Teaming?
Not necessarily the HP one but you need a switch/router that also supports teaming.

I want 4 of these fuckers but unfortunately one hard drive is almost as much as the whole server.

When you faggots talk about virtualising everything do you for example run windows server, then a windows server VM running SMB, another one for FTP etc or what?
>>
>>52438451
>Windows
No we talk about KVM, Xenserver, ESXI, proxmox when we talk about virtualizing also Linux / *BSD we talking about when we talk about OS.

Windows can do certain tasks good but that's really for bigger companies and you will get the most out of your hardware by running BSD/Linux because you can remove all the useless stuff and build what you really need.
>>
>>52438483
Was just wondering whether people virtualise just the server OS or virtualise every role individually as well.

> Intel Celeron G1610T

the xeon you mentioned in your first post is worth more than 170 eurobucks. if you bought the xeon version for 170 euro then somebody made a huge mistake.

here are USD listings, all $800+ which is about right.

Also the upgrades are more expensive than the part itself. The xeon cost me £95 and for simple file serving and backups the g1610t is fine. I even transcoded 2-3 plex streams.

HTPC + Server vs HTPC/Server?

I'd rather have just one machine but that means I've got to keep my power-hungry htpc on all the time (beefy for madVR upscaling). Can't decide if I should put a banana pi server in the closet and use the htpc as needed.

>>
>>52439776
It depends on a lot of things. A server is just a computer. If you are only using it as a file server then you could get away with a SoC board like a Banana Pi. I mean, your basic run-of-the-mill router could handle those other tasks and it has a shitty 200-400Mhz CPU in it.

Virtualization confuses me.Aren't servers comprised of relatively poor performing components compared to desktops? I get the whole "designed to be powered on 24/7" thing, but how does virtualization not bog these things down to the point of being unusable?

>>
>>52442313
I have critical services on separated VM's also mostly segmented from my private network (vlan, firewall)
All my VM's are tagged with H (high risk) M (medium risk) L (low risk)
For example high risk would be : webserver, tor node, any public services running, personal data on storage(encrypted)
Medium : Teamspeak, network services (DNS, NTP) ect.
Low: local applications, non personal data storage(firewalled for local private only), media center, and so on

Hello all,

I have a semi old Dell Desktop Intel (core 2 duo) machine in my possession and would like to make it into a personal server.

It is at my parents house but I will be moving out soon for college and live in dorms. I don't feel confortable torrenting on the dorm wifi and so my plan is to torrent on the home server, and then FTP into the server and transfer the video, or whatever.

I want to use Debian on the server and have a question:

I will SSH into the machine, but how would I configure Transmission to allow for a web UI, via SSH. I obviously know how to do it with clicking the UI. Is there some setting text file I have to edit?
>>
>>52442498
>servers comprised of relatively poor performing components
No.
>>
>>52442569
Explain why that is a better solution than just getting a VPN for a few dollars a month?
>>
>>52442591
For starters I wouldn't have to pay for a VPN. Secondly the download speeds on the VPN would be slower than if I weren't using it. Personally, I want to get experience with servers so it is a little side project, but I would actually be using it.
>>
>>52442569
>allow for a web UI, via SSH.
SSH with TCP forwarding is what you need.

Back up your knowledge with experience, I do appreciate the cyclic dependency between employment and experience.

Broaden your social network, join an interest group. i.e Linux User Groups, Geekups (see http://geekup.org/ if you're in the UK), Any other tech related events (see http://lanyrd.com/).

Have a look into freelancing. Start with simple jobs and work your way up into the areas you really want to focus on:

Search for local charities and offer to do some work for free. At the end you'll have more experience than you began with, a reference, potential employment.
