Idle between 40-45 and under full load it peaks to 85ish until the system fan takes over and lowers it to 70C.
Been converting for 12+ hours on all cores and it hasnt exceeded 70C except right before the system fan kicks in.

There's no alternatives, but I found some cons.
1) BIOS, no UEFI. Come on, HP.
2) There's no easy way to use an AHCI SATA mode w/o RAID and boot from a 'optical drive' SSD. Some guy suggested to write /boot to a microSD and boot from it.
2.1) Therefore, no rEFInd, I think I'll go with GRUB. Anyway, still wainitng for SSD.

That's what I did. Not a great solution but its been working for 8 months. Makes reinstalling a bit more complicated though.

Not necessarily the HP one but you need a switch/router that also supports teaming.

Windows can do certain tasks good but that's really for bigger companies and you will get the most out of your hardware by running BSD/Linux because you can remove all the useless stuff and build what you really need.

Also the upgrades are more expensive than the part itself. The xeon cost me £95 and for simple file serving and backups the g1610t is fine. I even transcoded 2-3 plex streams.
What should I look into if I want an additional 8+ bays of storage? I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to racks and whatnot.

It depends on a lot of things. A server is just a computer. If you are only using it as a file server then you could get away with a SoC board like a Banana Pi. I mean, your basic run-of-the-mill router could handle those other tasks and it has a shitty 200-400Mhz CPU in it.

All my VM's are tagged with H (high risk) M (medium risk) L (low risk)
For example high risk would be : webserver, tor node, any public services running, personal data on storage(encrypted)
Medium : Teamspeak, network services (DNS, NTP) ect.

I have a semi old Dell Desktop Intel (core 2 duo) machine in my possession and would like to make it into a personal server.
It is at my parents house but I will be moving out soon for college and live in dorms. I don't feel confortable torrenting on the dorm wifi and so my plan is to torrent on the home server, and then FTP into the server and transfer the video, or whatever.
I want to use Debian on the server and have a question:
I will SSH into the machine, but how would I configure Transmission to allow for a web UI, via SSH. I obviously know how to do it with clicking the UI. Is there some setting text file I have to edit?
