OP here, I am 24, with just mundane retail experience, but I want to get into a path that will help me find a career for life. I'm thinking about going into Best Buy to try to get on GeekSquad, it's not prestigious or anything but I need to get out of these shit dead end no prospect jobs I've been gravitating towards.

Building a resume on livecareer, would anyone mind looking at it?

Warning, seriously shitty resume.

i best you have not taken on or designed a single project since the last thread OP

what about all that second-rate advice we shouted at you

your problem isnt skills or experience you're either lazy or depressed. either way see a doc for some happy pills you'll do fine
>>
>>52424913
>http://imgur.com/mAMZtp7

put in more of your home projects and experience outside of work. it's good padding and will add more keywords for them to pick up on
>>
>>52425493
I may be lazy and depressed but that's something I strive to overcome without the need of medication.

I have some small projects, like setting up a headless raspberry pi media server, some small programs in Python etc.

>>52425523
Sure, should I put that under achievements?

>>52425449
You think I don't tell myself that every night when I'm in bed waiting for sleep? I'm trying to get a job at Geek Squad and get control of my life. It sucks watching my life pass me by.

Also, would some good references help? I've managed to make a bunch of friends with people high up in business/tech fields. One of them is a Senior HR manager for a tech staffing firm, she says she would be able to send me to any firm with her recommendation and they would hire me p much no questions asked but she wants me to earn it myself since I would respect myself more for it.
>>
>>52425724

yeah like "personal experience" or "skills" section write brief bullets of what was needed, what you used to do it, and how it applies to where you're applying

making a cover letter with a brief statement of your intentions and availability. it sounds corny but it's your change to quickly try and swing things in your favour

Your resume is filled with a whole lot of nothing. Employers would rather hire someone who's worked at McDonald's for 3 years which guarantees dedication than someone who's been flipflopping all over the place like you have. Get internships in places that matter, no one gives a damn that you help out at the soup kitchen.

Also, don't put failed degrees on your resume, make something up to pad the years.

I got fired yesterday from my IT manager job. I'll be honest that I made an inappropriate joke which was the excuse they used. What actually happened is the company got acquired and they wanted to nix my position and bring in a desktop tech. This is the third acquisition I've gone through after being hired where this has happened.

I'm going to freelance websites and IT consulting. At this point, I've been F'd over by so many companies I don't recommend working for anybody. Do your own thing or get a partner who can market and sell while you do the grunt work. You'll never be free in a corporate IT job. Job security is a lie.

I am a former Infantry Marine and then worked as a Private Military Contractor in Iraq for a few companies. Now I am a full time student.

Can I just pay someone to change all those years of war-stuff into a good resume? I know that's a bit lazy but I really, really don't feel like it at the moment plus I'm not sure if I would be the best at it.

By the time I am ready to actually start submitting it I should have A+, Network+, Security+, CCNA, CEH, OSCP (yes many of those are redundant, it's just the way my education is progressing). Also I know certs are dumb, blah, blah, blah but someone with my background needs a way to get the foot in the door. Also the OSCP is most definitely not dumb.

Basically, I ran the entire department at the place I got hired. I was the Infrastructure Engineer/Desktop tech. The company that bought us had a team of IT folks and they run all their apps in the cloud and use google apps for business. Since they are centrally managing in the cloud, the only thing they need to deploy on site is their new core router with a site-to-site vpn and a DC that will be remotely controlled. At this point they don't need somebody with all of the extra skills as they can handle that at home base.

More than likely a software job. Unless you actually want to do hardware then you can go into government/private for network stuff or go do fab shit. You'll more than likely just do software like the fucking rest of us.
>>
>>52427091
I take it you're in Canada because "Computer Engineering" is basically a more generalized computer science in Canada and it is pretty common

The CTO at my last job had a 4-year CE degree and like ten years programming experience

I would use it to get development/technical specialist positions
>>
>>52427119

Nah I've seen hardware guys with cs, physics, and ce degrees. You just have to apply for those type of jobs if you want it.
>>
>>52427153
CE is basically introductory electrical engineering (circuitry, etc.), some introductory computer science (boolean logic, memory management) and then the rest I think is stuff anywhere between CAD and actual programming in stuff like Java and C#

At least that is what it is like for a friend of mine in Canada. I don't know what CE is like in the US but I don't think it is very different.

>>52427161
I don't even really consider myself a mid-level developer. I'm aiming for a $70,000 CAD career next which I think is median salary according to the ESDC.

I basically just did contract work and co-op work terms during my time in College and as of last week I graduated. If anything I'm still entry-level relatively speaking.

Do you have any suggestions?

I mean, I've been in an interview before, but that was for a shit cashier job at a retail store where they have low expectations.
I was guaranteed the job anyway because the GM had a hard-on for my friend who I put down as a reference.
>>
>>52427226
>In constant fear just thinking about the interview

The strongest and most valuable asset for me was to just remain calm and talk to the interviewer as a normal human being.

On multiple occasions I was complimented by interviewers for two different jobs because of how calm and cool I was. Setting yourself apart from the rest of the nervous students this way is HUGE.

If you believe the company would be lucky to you have you rather than vice-versa this is rather easy. Just relax man and you'll be great. This is a skill in and of itself.
>>
>>52427212
At the Uni I'm going to, the CE course is just EE with 2-3 courses replaced with CS courses.

It's because of this that I'm wondering if CE is even worth it, or if I should switch to EE with something like CS as a minor.
>>
>>52425098
it is very very foolish of you to put 100% attendance as an accomplishment. That is not an accomplishment
>>
>>52427291
As someone graduating from CE in the spring, it is much easier to get a job if you go straight EE or CS
>>
>>52427291
>It's because of this that I'm wondering if CE is even worth it

I can tell you that CE is seen as decent in terms of employability. You're seen as above the 2-year computer programmer graduates and yet a tiny notch below the 4-year computer science graduates.

If you have a choice right now between CS and CE I would go with CS, however if you're already on your way to CE just keep going and pick up a Microsoft or Oracle certification some time.

CE + Cert > CS

CS > CE

Again, my frame of reference is in Canada. And remember work experience trumps any sort of differences between degree reputation.
>>
>>52427345
My post also makes sense with EE replaced with CS.

EE graduates can walk into any major telecommunications company and grab a sick salary like its nothing.

>>52427226
interviews are easy as long as you're not a spastic retard
bathe, groom yourself, and for fucks sake wear a goddamn tie. even if you don't need one for the job, always wear one for the interview. try to cover any tattoos and remove piercings, you're unlikely to get in trouble for them after being hired though.
give a firm handshake, avoid uh's and uhm's, and avoid giving simple answers to questions, more than just a yes or no (unless of course it's an obviously simple question)
speak clearly
check out the companies website and have a couple questions prepared to ask the interviewer
don't ask about salary (at least at the first interview)
try not to over- or under-sell yourself
show up about ten minutes early, give yourself time for traffic (if you're not familiar with the area, do a test drive out there a day or two ahead of time so you don't get lost)

lastly, and most importantly, be prepared to bullshit if necessary.

>>52427414
>Is the CS portion of a CE degree used mostly to get software related jobs?
Really it depends on the job you're going to be getting

If you're going to be a programmer CE is better than EE.

If you're going to be working with hardware in the back room of a major telecom company, EE is better than CE.

If you're going to be some dude that helps out with the SQL databases and cloud platform then CS is better than both

You should ask yourself what are you going to be doing? What can you see yourself doing 40 hours a week without losing your mind?

>>52427427
I'm Canadian. In College one of our early courses (3-year program) was how to write a resume and they basically recommended the format I have. I imagine the difference in the volume of applicants between the countries probably has something to do with it

Also, use LinkedIn. Have a nice photo, a nice description. Talk about what you like to do. Which tools you use. Events you have been.

Also change that shitty template.

Should have answered your question I guess, I've been looking at Geek Squad (which is where I'm going to take my resume) since it's probably the entry level I have most luck getting. I used to think I was interested in programming but as a career I don't know if I would find it all that fulfilling. I enjoy the idea of setting up and maintaining networks and am studying for and hope to have completed by this summer my CCNA.
>>
>>52428034
Geek squad is kind of fucked as you have to talk down to people most situations and follow standard procedure rather then logic.

Good luck with it anyway anon
>>
>>52428034
That's a nice thing, I guess.. I mean the CCNA.

So, do you like networks? Have you created a custom network at home? DMZ? NAT? Have you got anything like that?
>>
>>52428095
Nothing physically, the closest thing to setting up networks I've done is in Cisco simulators and such.

I know I should order some hardware to actually use in my home, but honestly strapped for money and uncertainty of the right way to do it all has left me doing nothing.

My priority right now is moving out of this shit job I'm in.

Just fuck my shit up /g/aylords.

This one's a little old, but the only difference is that my GPA is a little lower now (3.80).

Never had a real internship before, so I desperately need to score one next semester. I submitted this resume to a career fair (didn't really attend though) and got one hit from a telecom company, but that sounded a little boring.

I'm american going to UQ right now.

I almost got meme'd into going to QUT for a Bachelors of Computer Science.

Now here's a little information you need to understand what I'm about to say. In Murrica, when someone gets a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computer Science, we say "I have a Bachelors in Computer Science".

But in Australia, they have a different system, and they have both an actual degree called a Bachelors of Computer Science, and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.

The BSc is credible and recognised internationally, while the Bachelor of Computer Science is about the equivalent of a trade school certificate in the US.

Thank fuck I clarified that before wasting my money on a BS in CS.

Solid advice.

My pre-interview two-cents: set time to prepare, research the company, have a fake conversation with yourself as if you were talking with your interviewer. Do this the day/afternoon before the interview at the LATEST. Then take your mind off of it, enjoy the rest of the day--and make sure you get enough sleep. Wake up, go over what you studied to get yourself in the mood for the interview.

How you find a job are "implementation details" others don't want to be bothered about. Your parents care about how you manage to find a job just as much as a web browser cares about how the network card manages to send frames. I.e., not at all. They expect a result, they don't care about the "how" and don't want to be bothered by it just as a browser doesn't give a shit about a network's card problems with sending and receiving frames.

I look at this as the part the movies usually fast-forward through as the "training montage".

I want to save up enough money to afford to live 1. by myself 2. within walking distance of campus when I finally go back to school. Tired of living with retard-bros, and when I lived off campus it was too easy to say "fuck it" to the drive -> parking situation. Downside of going to school in a beautiful location are the rents, hence previously having to have 6 people in a 3 bedroom house and slowly going mad/ even when I had my own bedroom had to share kitchen and shit with retards.

IDK, just can't afford to fuck this one up. I think I need to stick around at least a year and a half for maximum "reliable dude" points, I have too many 4-6 month jobs on my resume already which I feel is kind of a red flag (correctly so) for employers.

aaaaaaagh but theres a cute girl at work I just need to ignore her. BAD PENIS

I was thinking Chicago and that thing in California from a while back. Being american european governments aren't my biggest concern, but would Chancellor Merkel have been so hasty to take in all those syrian refugees had America not elected a muslim?

it is my belief that Herr Merkel is currently riding a certain non-pork eating penis and that is the reason for her turning such a nonchalant eye to what's going on in her country.

What is the general consensus on finding an internship?

Can I just pester professors or are there specific websites I should monitor over the Spring semester?

any keywords other then software engineer, intern, and information technology I should use?

I should add I would like a job either working in systems administration or software development.

I'm not too worried about experience, I've already interned via my 2 year schools co-op so I have a good reference for hands on desktop/laptop support.

I work over the school year only. I can't work my normal job over the summer so I'm starting to look now so I won't have to be homeless or work a 7.50 job.
>>
is there like a guide that shows you what tech certifications are required to eventually become a systems admin? I program and network in my spare time but my job right now isn't even related to technology. Wtf do I do?

ti's 97% who you know 1% who you blow and 2% wishful thinking and hope
seriously if you want a job you've got to know the guy doing the hiring or one of his bosses, then you have to hassle them with how awesome you are at everything and beg to work for them
1/10 you get a job which is the best odds you're going to get

See if you can trim it down to one page. You mention freelancing so I assume that's graphic design, and I see related things on your resume, but if you're applying for a technology job they're not really looking for GD experience.

I personally don't like things like the Area of Expertise and Targeting sections, I feel like they're just a waste of space. Let the bullet points from your work experience speak for all that, and in a quicker, more concise manner.

Also don't be afraid to talk yourself up. Maybe instead of "Maintained client server.." say "Administered cleint server..."

Some of your points seem like fluff, maybe they can be cut to make it one page. Also the mini paragraphs for each work experience probably aren't needed, as I said earlier let the bullet points speak for themselves.

I get the feeling you were in the military, I was too. If you have a clearance, brag about it. Throw in some buzzwords for the jobs you're looking at, and remember that your resume doesn't have to be perfect. I cringed reading over mine what with the bullshit entry about Python and Puttign that Fort Huachuca is in New Mexico when it is actually in Arizona, but I still managed to bumble my way into a help desk job.

Go to community college, get your AA in whatever field you choose, and get a job at the local coffee shop or student store or some shit. Since you're on /g/ I can only assume you want to do something related to technology, so consider computer science or something similar. It's not hard, it's just a grind. But if you like it then you won't mind.
But seriously, that's where you should start if you don't have too many big opportunities. CC is dirt cheap pretty much everywhere and it's basically cheating for easy credits if you plan on advancing to university. The small job working at/near the school will give you the chance to network. That's probably the best thing you can do for yourself at this point in your life.

Good luck, dude.

I'm in a CC doing a shitty 2 year computer technology degree that is going to take me 3 and a half years to complete. I have no job experience and I can hardly remember the networking and programming that I've done over the years due to my lack of interest and motivation (doing enough just to pass). Since high school I've only been interested in information to confirm my hatred for how the world works. I'm 23 now and my current situation is leeching off my wage slave mother to sustain myself. I want to do something with my life but I really dislike the process of getting hired and pretending to care about my potential job that perpetuates this culture of consumption and its' disregard for environment, biodiversity, and the well being of others. In essence, it feels as though nothing really matters. Admittedly though I did have a moment of enlightenment recently when I thought I was in love with someone; I'm over it, and it now seems most females are in it for the financial security.

Does anyone here feel the same way about the human experience? I'm going to assume not because everyone seems to be engaged in the topic of this board. I would have asked /adv/ but it seems I would get a more mature and intellectual response here. Also, if you do happen to think this way, what motivates you in life or what drives you to learn?
