In this regard Fedora (and distros based off of it) absolutely blows it out of the water.
SPEC files in rpm packaging makes modifying and recompiling existing packages piss easy.
To apply the patch all you have to do is download the source rpm with dnf, put the patch next to the source tarball and add the patch to the list of patches in SPEC. Then just run rpmbuild -ba.

Notifications are sent via DBUS and cron does not have access to your DBUS session.
Just search for "cron notify-send", there are multiple solutions on stackoverflow, but when I tried to get newsbeuter notifications to work via cron, none of them worked for me.

Wondering if anyone could help me here. I've been running some form of linux on my laptop for over two and a half years now, but I want to dual boot it on my Windows desktop now. Unfortunately, I have a R9 390 GPU and whenever I try to install a distro, I get an error message along the lines ofRadeon ... Invalid ROM contentsand the installation freezes, or my computer goes to a blank screen indefinitely somewhere along the install process. I switched from Debian sid to Arch a couple years ago because things had a habit of breaking once in a while and whenever they did, I would always end up consulting the arch wiki for my answers. no be fair, stock debian isn't about having the newest features available for software.
If you look at stable, some of the packages are years old without upgrading because there isn't a need unless there is some security patch needed.
If you want the newest stuff and you are familiar with debian stable then you can go to sid or testing if you got time for problem solving. While arch you are basically at the sid-testing level at base install, which is why sometimes arch breaks and you gotta spend time to find out why shit broke in the first place. Thankfully is has such good documentation you could probably perform heart surgery if they had a page for it.

Of course debian isn't about having newest features, it's about being reliable and versatile, after all it's the only distro that exists even on most obscure architectures.
But package management system doesn't change the reliability of the OS.
Not to mention APT doesn't have a reputation of being a very reliable package manager either, after all it was the last package manager to introduce package signing, which is a critical security feature.
I'm just saying that the way Fedora devs do the packaging is much better since it doesn't really affect the user, but makes the sysadmin and dev job a lot easier.

I'm using XFCE. In the workspace menu of the settings manager, I am able to define a screen margin where windows won't appear, but it seems to only work for maximised windows and not just all windows in general. Is there a workaround? I basically just want a margin for all windows at all times.

Occasionally Nemo bugs out and I need to manually kill the process and open it again. Currently, I do this using "top" and then wait for Nemo to show up, then kill it from there.
Is there a faster way to completely kill the process? I've tried using xkill and clicking on the window, but it doesn't seem to work. And I don't know the process ID unless I use the top command.

Is it just me or has Mate gotten slower recently? I can't get 60fps videos to play stutter-free in Mate no matter what I do. I use the built in compositor, I used Compton, tried different renderers, and I always get stuttering video. Even 25 fps video stutters, but it's less noticeable. Old games that scroll at 60fps stuttered too.
I ended up saying "fuck it" and went back to Xfce. No video stuttering at all.

I started with #!, moved to Debian, used Ubuntu back in Uni, ran Arch for about six months, played with RedHat Enterprise and CentOS during job training, and am currently running Mint because I kind of just feel like being lazy for a while.
Linux From Scratch has caught my eye recently. Should I install Gentoo for a while, or is my past experience (specifically with Arch) enough to get me started on LFS?
anyone using vimb? where the fuck is the config file? there's a file just named "config" with no file extension in ~/.config/vimb but that's not exactly giving me much to go on and i'm having a hard time finding documentation

Having a problem with firefox.
It wont load my profiles, and when i remove the .mozilla folder, it creates .mozilla but it dosent create a skeleton profile to load to.It says its inaccessable or empty.
I've backed up my profile and ive spent hours trying to get it to function again.I even reverted to v35, to no avail.

Successfully installed gentoo with dual-booting
Encountered 3 minor problems
1. It says on grub2 that my other os is windows vista when it actually is windows 8.1
2. the resolution in the gentoo terminal is too small
3. it says "this is (mycustomhostname).unknown_domain" on gentoo login
any fixes for these problems? entirely new to gentoo so I am unsure as what to do.

probably you can just change that in the grub

It's described as "slightly easier than Gentoo".
It has all the same challenges, just some better tools to help you along.
If you're going to cheat and use genkernel (the only really difficult part is configuring the kernel) then Funtoo is better.
That and its portage is git-based rather than rsync-based, among other things. It's just better than gentoo.
