Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

New 2016 ThinkPads announced:

----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I wanted to get a 1920x1080 T520 but seems they're much rarer in Europe so I'll have to get a smaller model, probably 1600x900 :(
>>
>>52408615

Anything below 1920x1080 is a dealbreaker for me, personally. It's just awful having that less workspace than that.
>>
>>52408633
Do you know if it's worth buying a 1080 screen separately and fitting it? Or does the model's original resolution mean it will be up-scaling still?
>>
>>52408451
Not very hard to do and when got mine the thermal paste wasn't there anymore.
>>
>>52408789
yeah no shit it isn't hard, just haven't needed to do it, since all the stuff i needed to upgrade/replace just needed screws on the sides, or underneath
>>
>>52408774
If you buy the 1080p screen that fits then it will be real 1080p. It depends on the screen, not on any hardcoded variable in the graphics chip as you may be thinking.
>>
>>52408820
Ah okay. Yeah it was a bit silly to think that. Hopefully it's not too hard.

>New 2016 ThinkPads announced

Fuck me, I think I jumped the gun on the T450s I bought back in November. That T460s looks badass. And they finally put an HDMI port on it. Meanwhile I'm stuck in the past with this ancient fucking VGA.
>>
>>52409073
>Meanwhile I'm stuck in the past with this ancient fucking VGA.

Senpai, I was contemplating buying the 2015 just because it has VGA. I'm not going to, though. I'll be getting the new series. The need for a VGA comes up too often for me for it not to be a relevant parameter though. But, I need a new laptop within the next couple of weeks, and I doubt the 2015 models will drop in price enough any time soon, for it to be warranted to not buy the new model.

But yeah, you should've waited. Maybe sell of your T450s now, while you can still get decent money for it, and get the new series.

starting LaunchCode's CS50X course tomorrow so I bought a new chinaman 9cell off amazon for my t420.

9 cell, "18 month warranty", $33 shipped with Prime. the description claims they use Samsung cells, but it had no reviews. sounded better than the ones with reviews so here we are.

just fully charged it and testing life now. I have a quad core and two hard drives, hopefully it can power me for at least four hours. my genuine Lenovo battery only lasts about 2.5 at best.

any tips for saving battery life? I'll let you guys know how this one works out.

The suspense of waiting for my T450 is killing me! Should get here tomorrow.
>>
>>52411779
I got a pack of the three since my X220 needed a replacement and I wanted to try the other styles instead of buying 10 soft domes that I'd never use up.

Soft dome is the one everybody's acquainted with, and it works well enough to be the standard. I didn't think I'd like the soft rim from the appearance but I actually love it now that I've tried it. It feels much more accurate and responsive than soft dome ever has for me and there's absolutely no way for my finger to slip off of it. I didn't really like classic dome, it just felt it had all the same issues I have with soft dome only compounded by having an even smaller and steeper-edged surface area and rougher texture. Nice that the option is there for people who are used to it, though.
>>
>>52411976
Find your service manual and see if you can replace it or if you have to buy a new display. Then Google the part number, find one, order it, and replace it according to manual. Search engines aren't rocket science.

Pic related is the biggest one and actually the only big one. I'll try to replace the palmrest and keyboard when I get some money. Then maybe the top cover and screen. Dwarf fortress is an infinite CPU game. It'll eat as many cycles as you have.
You could run it on something really bad but you'll only get like 10fps with like 2 dwarves.
And world gen, world events, things like that will take fucking forever to calculate.
>>
>>52413851
Oh, I forgot to ask:
what could cause the effect seen on the photo? Can I repair that?

Also, what should I install to check my battery? I don't see any info on battery cycles in Kubuntu. Will tp_smapi help me?

Is it possible to acquire a Thinkpad that's gonna play dwarf fort completely normally

I can find some on ebay for £120 with 2.4 GHz

But I have no idea if that's good enough
>>
>>52420750
Dwarf Fortress is coded with the ass indeed
>>
Just got my T420 and there's quite the blue tint, is this normal?

is the x220 worth the extra $80 compared to x201?
>>
I'm sure this has been asked a fuckload of times, but:

>T BLAZE IT
>X220

Taking into account the size/weight doesn't matter, why should I choose the blaze it above the x220?

Thinkpad x250 and 17" Macbook Pro is the best combo of laptops.
>>
I just disassembeled my broken old x121e to salvage what I could. Well, it works fine actually, it's just that the hinges broke. I have no use for a laptop that's literally falling apart. The threading for the screws that broke was garbage tier plastic painted to look metal.

Never buy the cheap Lenovo stuff. I mean god damn.

Time to get an X260!

Anyone know why the new X1 Yoga has a higher MSRP than the P40 Yoga, despite the fact that the P40 is equipped with quadro graphics? Like am I really sacrificing that much for a smaller footprint? Pretty sure they're both 6th gen intel, though the lower end X1 only has an i5.
>>
>>52423135
Better thermals, higher resolution, Ultrabay, socketed CPU, more ports, dedicated GPU option, better keyboard feel. If you don't care about size or weight there's not much of a reason to go for the more portable device.

>>52423004
Yeah, the panel quality isn't great even if you got the 900p one. You need to get a 15" Thinkpad if you want a good screen, smaller models are all compromises.

Anyone running Windows with Teracrypt/Veracrypt or similar full system encryption?

I've an i5 T430s that has the hardware AES chip and was wondering if I would be taking a hit in CPU performance - mostly light gaming that is pretty CPU taxing to begin with

What's a good thinkpad to get that handles diablo 3 well? something budgety but not horrible. also where do you all buy yours from?ebay?

Does anyone have any more info on the custom bios for the T420 & Ivy bridge I7s?

google translate fucking fails hard when trying to translate forum posts. But from what I gather... it all works except usb and some problems with the HD4000.... Can anyone fill in the blanks?

Are those volume and power buttons on the side there? Yuck.
>>
>>52423136
B-but display mods for X220 haven't been made feasible yet that only a few chinese technowizards have done it, and even then it's flawed because it uses the displayport for output, rendering it unusable with external monitors

At least 1366x768 is less eye cancer when screen size is smaller

TLP and downclock GPU on battery. Even if turbo is off, the GPU driver is not aware of that and when it wants to raise its operating frequency it will put the CPU into turbo mode, wasting power(GPU and CPU use the same clock reference)
max_non_turbo=$(< /sys/class/drm/card0/gt_RP1_freq_mhz)
echo $max_non_turbo | sudo tee /sys/class/drm/card0/gt_max_freq_mhz

got my two X200's today.

one is pretty good but the screen seems to be permanently redshift'd/flux'd and it doesn't have a hard drive.

the other's screen is good, but it's spitting out a fan error message at boot.

it's fine though, i'll harvest one for the other, and libreboot it when the jumpers and clip come.
>>
>>52423894
A volume rocker, yeah. I don't mind it considering you can probably mute the laptop before you even open it. Also makes sense given that media keys won't work if you have it in tablet mode.
>>
>>52411976
It's probably a fuse that won't be too hard to replace. I doubt the actual light died.

On a not really related note: give me tips for maximizing battery life while runnign linux on a T420. I already turned off the discrete graphics card in the BIOS and I just found the setting in XFCE power manager that tells the machine to suspend when the lid closes rather than just lock the screen.

With dedicated graphics, yes. Without, no. We've gone over this like five times already. Since you apparently can't into ebay, I've done all the hard work for you. Here's what you want:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-T420-Core-i5-2-5GHZ-4GB-320GB-Nvidia-1600x900-Webcam-Win-7-Excellent-/262239199202?hash=item3d0eac9fe2:g:azAAAOSwo3pWdzpz

Mind, that's not a particularly good price. If you're patient and check repeatedly, you should be able to score those specs for under $200 like I did. But if you can't be bothered, there it is.

Hi /tpg/. I'm going to university in a few months and am leaning towards buying a thinkpad. The x220 sounds perfect, but I am afraid of it becoming outdated. Would an x220 last another 4 years? Money is not an issue and I'm open to buying a new thinkpad if I have to.
>>
>>52424960
Is there a certain name ot look for? most t420's I see don't have nvdia and are 1366 reso
>>
>>52424470
It renders the display port for the dock unusable, retard. You can still use the display port on the laptop itself just fine.
>>
>>52425042
The CPU is plenty strong, on par with Broadwell. What you might not be happy with is the integrated GPU if you play any games at all. HD 3000 is really anemic, not just insufficient for playing the latest AAA console ports but awful for just about anything. It struggles with even the more barebones Source games. If you have the budget for it, get an X230 instead. You can swap the X220 keyboard in if you want it and you'll get much more mileage out of the iGPU.
>>
>>52425042
Money isn't an issue? Get the new 2016 X1 Carbon which should be coming out in Feb. T460s and T450s are nice as well.
>>
>>52425097
Just search T420 1600x900 nvidia gpu and search from there

>>52425491
My bad, doesn't change the fact it's not feasible until the chinks figure out something more efficient and cost effective
>>
Got an x220 on ebay with a docking station and spare touchpad panel.

i5, 8gb, 120gbssd, and ips.

$200+$20 shipping. Did I do good?

It's in decent shape and feels really good to type on.

Got it to use at work while sitting at my desk.
>>
Can I use on of the USB 3.0 Port Docks with a x230?
According to Lenovo site only the x230s is supported.
>>
Anyone used Lenovo Y50-70? How's the screen or build quality?

Can i5-4710H and 860M handle Witcher 3, at least on lowest?
