Probably could actually, he'd need to find ways to plug the empty ports the NUC won't have though, not to mention he'd have to adapt it to the internal VGA cable.

Doesn't seem worth it, he'd be better off installing Linux on it or getting a proper X server and just running resource-heavy applications remotely if he wants to use it as something other than an offline productivity system/gaming shitbox/clock

Replaced it after a few months, customers absolutely loved it but god PPC hardware aged like shit, could handle multi-tab workloads and it was stables as fuck but damn, loading pages was slow. It made a great clock and spreadsheet box but if you had to research a new consignment, forget about it.

Made me curious anyway, last time I used a G5 regularly in 2010 it was pretty nice.

http://barefeats.com/pentium4.html
http://www.anandtech.com/show/1702

According to these the performance seemed about on-par with what Intel had at the time, there's also this one http://www.infoworld.com/article/2679339/operating-systems/power-mac-g5-is-apple-s-best-work-yet.html totally sucking its dick about memory bandwidth, I'll have to go dig mine out and test that myself.

The innards of the 1st gen rev A and rev B iMac G5s were laid out beautifully and it was easily serviceable (just pop off the back panel). It's clear that a lot of thought was put into it.

Sadly every iMac since they added in the iSight and made it thinner (third gen I think) has been a nightmare to work on, requiring you to take out the screen to do anything to them.
>>
>>52411735
>damn, loading pages was slow
The problem is that the internet has become needlessly heavy. In the realm of things people do with computers, nothing save for 3D games and maybe DAWs+NLEs has had a resource usage curve anywhere near as drastic as the web has. Javascript and web devs treating browsers as operating systems are the fucking scourge. If it weren't for that the usefulness range of computers would easily reach back another 5 years from where it is now.

Aside from the occasional Apple product, I don't think there was an era where tech design had worse taste.

At least in the 90s everything looked very business like, in the early 00s things tried to look slightly cool but just looked cheap and garish.

People would do horrible case mod ricing at the time, and it actually would be an improvement, so what does that say about the default?

You won't get fantastic loading times on the internet and HD media playback will probably be limp (maybe, never tried it), but other than that you'll be alright. Unless you want to use it for development or server use you'd probably be better off just keeping OS X on it since you'd have access to a larger library of software/abandonware actually contemporary to the system and get more use out of it that way. Plus better browser support with TFF.

I used to own a first-gen 27" iMac (quad 2.66 Core i5 750) and that thing was a nightmare to work on. Not because it was hard to open mind you, no... that was simple. Just grab a suction cup, pull off the front glass, and then unscrew the display panel.

The hard part was disconnecting the two display ribbons after tilting up the display, because they were stupidly short (like 2-3" max) and fragile. Even for a guy like me who has medium sized hands with spindly fingers unplugging those safely was damn near impossible given the space I had to work in.

And then of course once you were done replacing your spinning rust or whatever you had to reconnect those stupid tapes under the same working conditions that they were unplugged in, which is even harder.

That machine was a workhorse and its display is beautiful but I can't stress how happy I am that I'll never have to maintain any of that model ever again. Glad to hear the newer ones are better.

Anyone ITT know anything about old GPUs? I've got a Geforce 3 Ti 500 that won't work. Fan turns on, but the monitor doesn't. No beep codes, no error messages. Just doesn't work in any system I try it with. Is the card dead or can I fix it somehow? I'd like to put it in my retro gaming PC since it'd be a nice upgrade over the 3 Ti 200 currently serving in there. Pic related.

Senpai its so cheap you may aswell buy a new one
>>
>>52415441
Nah, if I can't fix it for free I'll just keep using my 200. It works well enough as it is, I just wanted to see if I could give it a little boost.

I might have to buy one of those before they become ridiculously expensive. Can it play 720p animu without stuttering?

If you get one of the more powerful ones probably.
>>
>>52415959
Even the dual G5s have trouble with youtube videos. There's no way it's going to play 720p anime

You can't even find those themes anymore. All the old mac sites are long gone and dead.

Daily reminder that emulation is cheating.

If I had an old Mac I'd use it, but there's no way I'm going to spend $50 on an iBook or $400 on a G5 system.
Not to mention it was annoying to even get it working on a VM in the first place.
