We don't just call it gnu/linux because of the technical contributions, but the ethical contributions as well.
Without gnu, we wouldn't have as much free software as we do today.

GNU software is actually vastly superior to other alternatives. Also the Linux kernel uses the GNU GPL license, so technically it's part of the "cult", even though it's not part of the official GNU project, its license follows the GNU project guidelines about freedom.

The GPL has caused most large companies to fear open source because they've heard that open source infects their proprietary software and since rms has succeeded so well in his shilling there are a lot of nice GPL things that no one can ever use for actual work. If the open source movement had gone to permissive licences companies would be much more willing to use them. And most companies are smart and realize that if they contribute back to the open source projects they're using it's going to be much easier to maintain them and steer them to the direction they want to.
Obviously there would be bad apples trying to just rip off and profit from that but that doesn't change anything since they exist even with the GPL. The GPL won't stop a shady Indian or Chinese dev using it in their proprietary botnet software but it will stop respectable companies from using it in their software.

Yes it's possible, look at every single succesful itteration of Linux, smart tvs, android, chrome os, all of them use Linux without gnu, your router probably does too.
You could do it in your PC too, there are distributions without GNU they often offer replacements like busybox.
