I'd also be embarrassed if my co-workers saw my desktop having icons on it.
for notes: pen plus paper (article) but keep the laptop ready (in standby mode) to quickly look sth. up

>Best laptop for taking notes/writing papers
Depends on what notes you take, goodluck taking mechanics or geometry notes on a non touch device. For that reason Im voting surface pro 4 for this category, just plug in a nice big keyboard for writing essays and shit if you have fat fingers.
>Best laptop for work
Depends on work, I think xps 13 hits the sweet spot of having performance and being a laptop
I got a Zenbook UX303LA for uni. Didn't upgrade anything so it came with the normal 1080p IPS screen, 4th gen i5, 8GB RAM and no dedicated GPU. Not sure if I done goofed though, I think it was a better choice than the UX305 due to the CPU

You retain more because you're still 'pen' writing and all your work is saved constantly.
And you still have your regular laptop layout for writing papers.
That's what I'm doing this semester and so far so good

What about LaTeX?
>>52402327
Even if i was proficent enough in LaTeX to create something like pic related with same comfort and accuracy I have on pen & paper, I couldn't type fast enough to match drawing on notebook

I also agree that there Surface is great at note taking. I have a Pro 3 looking to get a Pro 4. The new pen is even better for real paper feel, especially with the new tips. Also the new chip/chipset means lowered power draw and heat.

Same here, mine has lasted to the now end of my PhD. Upgraded from a i5 to the i7, just stuck a new main board in it, 16GB RAM, 128Gb SSD boot and a 500Gb. Honestly a solid laptop.

What are your guys thoughts on the Dell inspiron 14 3000? It's dirt cheap, upgradeable ram and hard drive. Also excellent Linux driver support.
