What you showed in mint was perfectly acceptable. You also skipped many configuration steps in Windows (and possibly OSX --no experience with OSX).
Not to mention that in other DEs and more sane distros, it's even easier.
In GNOME on Debian, I literally click the plus in Settings and then pick the method I want. It's actually easier than it was in Windows 8 at least.
If I want to switch between them once configured, it's just Super+Space. No settings window needed.
