Cooling.
>>
Computers have gotten hotter overall. The Pentium 3 CPU sat on a cartridge with no fan at all. You still needed an exhaust fan in your case, but that was it. And your PSU fan I guess.

Now you need to plan out the air flow in your case. Your CPU and GPU both have coolers with one or two fans each. At minimum you have two case fans, an intake and exhaust. Everything just runs too hot, even your low TDP i3s.
>>
>>52393716
Because 99% of computers generate enough heat that passive cooling isn't the best option.

Try cooling an overclocked cpu under full load or a gpu while gaming passively. It can be done, but a fan makes way more sense.
>>
I feel so outdated using my notebook with that fan spinning all the time. Then I go to my tablet and its all quiet it feels so much more comfy.

Because you want to be able to exploit your hardware to the maximum, fans help you do that. I mean you could use passive and use it at 60% or something if that's your thing, but most people don't want that.
>>
>>52393716
My CPU pulls almost 200 watts when overclocked, and after factoring conversion and other losses the board has to push at least 240 watts through the socket.

My GPU pulls about the same as the motherboard-to-CPU-socket.
My board, drives, power supply and yes the fans themselves all draw power (or lose some to conversion and/or line loss)

So, full tilt, my system likely uses ~500w internally and ~550w at the wall.

That's a lot of heat. That's a little over a third of what common space heaters use. 8 hours of high utilization and the PC's room is 6-7C higher than the house average.
I don't trust even the best of passive cooling to keep things reliable and safe.

You need them during times of sustained heavy load like video encoding and such, but even then a single fan @1000rpm is usually enough to keep the temps within spec. It's not like anyone has his fans spinning while browsing 4chan or working, except imbeciles who don't know how to computer.

At this point in time, dropping fans would mean sacrificing power, and no one is willing to use hardware as powerful as hardware from 2007 just for "muh quiet", especially since fans nowadays are pretty darn quiet anyway.

Got a semi related question for this thread...whats considered a 'safe' temperature for a gpu?? I have an xfx 390 that was hitting 70degrees after an hour of gtaV, should I be worried or is this ok...also the xfx fan is noisy as all hell!
>>
>>52393716
Because 99% of PCs are old PCs.

It's true that new PCs for simple office tasks don't need fans. They still have them because it's cheaper than big fanless heatsinks.

You'll always need fans for gayman and shit, though.

Sure there may have been some that were passive, and some Pentium 2s that were passive, but there were a whole bunch that weren't.

Nigga, you ARE deaf, and so is everyone else you showed your computer to.
>>
>>52400111

Nigga if you count all the fan's in my case it actually comes to 9.

I suppose we may be going to far in a few places.

2 CPU fans, 1 Exhuast fan, 1 PSU fan, 2 Intake fans and 3 fucking fans on the GPU.

It's a miracle modern PC's are as quiet as they are with this many fans.
>>
>>52400397
>miracle
Having that many fans is precisely why it's so silent - they don't need to spin up as fast as they would if there were fewer of them.
>>
>>52400404

Tru dat.

Case never go above 800rpm so I suppose u are right.

I'll be looking forward to when pleb liquid cooling is good enough to run passively still, or computers simply become so efficient any gains through overclocking produce no significant heat anymore.
>>
Relevant to the thread.

The most CPU/GPU capable fanless setup?
>>
>>52393751
oh wait it's one of those shitty passive cooled GPU-s that could be used as a grill.
>>
>>52400510
All of them. You just need a large enough heatsink. Fanless is a gimmick tho. Unless you're in an environment that has too much free floating particles to make maintaining a heatsink with a fan too much of a chore just put some 500-800rpm fans on it. You'll never hear it anyway.
>>
>>52400510
CPUs: Atoms/AMD integrated CPUs.
GPUs: If you want no case fan or a slow case fan, used the built-in one. Otherwise, look at shit like https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Palit/GTX_750_Ti_KalmX/29.html.
