Ayyy friends. Hope this text post helps clear up the confusion.
Here's how I reached that number, although I calculated it for my shitty state (Ohio), so I'll do one that is more generalized. Reminder that they way the Powerball is taxed, is off the Jackpot total, not the lump sum.
Jackpot +1.4 billion
Lumpsum: +$930 million (38% of the sum)
Fed taxes part 1:(citizen or resident with social security number): -$232.5 million
Fed taxes part 2 (April 15th edition): -$135.8m million (because at that tax bracket, it's 39.6%)
We're left with $561m at this point.
Now this is where it differs, because State and Local taxes on lotteries are different by state, and well, local city.
The median would be about another 15%.
That's another -$139.5 m.
We're at $422 million now. But now you have to pay federal taxes again, and it's still marked by the initial jackpot.
Sp that's another -$184m, even if you do the maximum charitable contributions to offset it.
We're at 238 million USD. This is about when you can start actually holding on to your money.
