Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

New 2016 ThinkPads announced:

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I might have to get an XPS 15 since I can't find anything else even close to what I want in a new laptop.

The X260 is almost perfect, but it's gimped by single-channel RAM (and all the other modern X-series compromises).

Maybe I should just keep using my Latitude E6510 and wait to upgrade until laptops catch up with what I want from them.

questions,

How do you check BIOS for computrace? Is it apparent from the main tab, or just the security tab? A seller told me they couldn't provide a picture because they had already packed it up but BIOS was "out to factory settings and password reset".

Is it relatively easy to swap in some new RAM, battery or SSD on the recommended T series models? My DIY experience doesn't extend beyond building a desktop.
>>
>tfw thought my sd card reader crapped out and never checked the bios until now

wow, i'm such an idiot. no it doesn't have a pw, but never checked the disabled/enabled shit.
>>
How good is current *BSD support for Thinkpads, in particular FreeBSD on T520? All I can find is several year old posts complaining about it.
>>
>>52379760
Battery - you should be able to figure it out from the markings on the bottom
Memory - there is a door for the first 2 slots with markings shaped like RAM sticks. For those with 4 slots, just follow the Hardware Maintenance manual
Disk/SSD - 1 screw behind a door on the side and you just slide it out, done

As for lojack, antitheft, etc - yes the security tab. There's 3 options - enable, disable, permanently disable. If the last one, it won't appear

guys what do?
do i buy a T420/520 and install a i7-2630QM from an old laptop in it
or do i buy a core 2 duo T9600 to install in my T400.

i'm not sure what to do as my T400 has the 1440x900 display and i love 16:10 and it's only £15 for the T9600, but quad core and better graphics, but a T420/520 is like £150-200.

Alright, buying brand new. Do you think it's worth it to wait a month for the X260s to become availible, instead of just getting an X250 right now? It essentially boils down to Skylake vs Broadwell, right? I get the impression that this series is pretty conservative otherwise.

Ideally, I'd need something by next week, but I'll manage for a month or so if it's really worth it.
>>
>>52381087
I would go for the X250, but maybe wait for the price to drop.

I'm not even 100% sure the X260 has a swappable battery, since the T460s doesn't.
That's a killer feature IMO.

Anyway, yeah, I'm a bit worried the X250 is going to be harder to get ahold of. It usually works like that in my country. You can still get an X240 for pretty cheap, yeah, but they're all weird as fuck configurations. Like an i7 processor and 16 gigs of RAM with a 1366x768 TN panel. Like, what the fuck?

Jew reporting in. Same sort of deal... I make $60k a year, I own a house and a car (albeit in a small town where both are cheaper) and I see literally no reason to spend $2k on a brand new computer when a 4-year-old one gets the job done just fine.

Quitting the vidya helps a lot though. Once you're working all the time and have removed the need for demanding hardware to run poorly coded, mass-produced games, it becomes way easier to work full time on aging machines. For 3-4 years? It really depends how you look at it. The things are all using 5-year-old hardware right now, so by the time you're done with it, they'll be 8-9 years old, which is ancient in computer terms. Some people here are using T60p units that are roughly that age, and while they perform well with basic tasks, keep in mind probably none of them are using the original operating system, and few have Windows 7 (ie, get ready to get friendly with Linux). Other than that there are certain limitations you'll have to deal with when the computer is that old.

Speaking of Windows 7, it's getting cut off in 4 years.

Check if you can get a replacement, not everyone gets one (not every chinkpad had a defective battery). Download the tool if you're on windows, or read more.

>The things are all using 5-year-old hardware right now, so by the time you're done with it, they'll be 8-9 years old, which is ancient in computer terms
I don't think things are really that dire. The current industry focus on power efficiency and phones and tablets has allowed Sandy Bridge to remain on par with Broadwell in terms of sheer performance. Unless there's some major computing revolution inbound that I don't know about, a T420 should remain plenty sufficient for general use for years to come. The BIOS mod for Ivy Bridge processors and 1866MHz RAM will only help keep it running.

anon you can't compare 8 years ago now to 8 years ago from 4 years from now.

the release of the I-core quad/dual processor line was huge. Ever since the 2nd gen the tech has hit a slump.
>15% increase for selective single core applications from a 2500k vs 6600k

Biggest problem would be a screen. If that isn't a problem then get a T420 and save yourself hundreds of shekels in the longrun.

I havent received it yet, it will come tomorrow. I have to use Windows 10 for CAD/Visual Studio and Linux for HPC-development.

The CPU is VT-d enabaled, so think I will install Arch as a base and create a VM (Qemu,KVM) for CAD and VS-stuff. The VM should be able to get direct access to the GPU and the host will run on the HD4000 meanwhile.

But I have not played around with such relative new hardware and since yesterday I used a dual-boot to fit my requirements.

>>
>>52393362
the x250 and x260 are good, the problem is the x230 is still very close in terms of processing power, size, wight, options, etc. and you can get one for pretty damn cheap now. the main advantage the newer ones have is battery life, which is significantly better. so if you're ok with spending a good amount of money on more battery life then without resorting to big extended or even slice batteries then fine. my x230 gets ~7 hours of light use on a 6-cell, a 9-cell would be better but it ads quite a bit of size and weight. the new x-series can achieve close to double the battery life while taking up less space than the old 6-cell. the problem is they have achieved power savings by basically switching to ulv for everything but the p-series. previously those CPUs were only in s and i variants. still, not many people need a lot of processing power in a laptop. those chips are still more than enough for everyday tasks, HD video, even light gaming.

Hey guys, first time caller, long time listener.

1) I own an X220-4291HB4. Is there an upgrade to the screen, i.e. IPS and/or better resolution? I've been googling and found a bunch of mixed information. Higher resolution might be bottlenecked by the display driver, I dunno.

2) I looked up the part numbers in the manual and I'm confused as to the exact part number. Under 4291 it doesn't say "22x" yet it lists 22x under 4287 and 4289.

Epilogue) My screen got damaged somehow during a flight yesterday. The panel has about a 3" deadspot top to bottom that will flicker when I tap it with my finger. Aka it's dead.

The difference between Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge is negligible for CPU-intensive tasks (ie, a 5%-8% improvement clock for clock), but the integrated graphics in Ivy were MUCH better (25%-50% improvement). The T430 is also more energy efficient, but they cost considerably more than the T420.

>>52394173
Coming from someone who owns a T400 with the ATI GPU, don't do it. It may have been decent when it was new, or even a few years old, but it's beyond shit now. The drivers are ancient and won't do dick all with games, and the video decoding capabilities are not appreciably better (the integrated graphics do 720p just fine and neither can really handle 1080p all that well). I've actually put the ATI card to sleep after switching to Linux... disabled that shit in the BIOS.

I'm an engineering student. The stylus capability is needed when drawing circuits or doing math. More processing power is needed when if I'm using Vivado and trying to compile VHDL. Soldering isn't too much of an issue for me.

What's /g/'s experience with WD's laptop hard drives? I know a few years ago people here were on the anti-Seagate brigade, Hitachi was "Deathstar" which left WD as the only acceptable option. But literally every single WD drive in every single Thinkpad at my family's business (about 15 overall) has developed bad sectors after only a few years of use. The mix of Seagate/Hitachi drives (only 6, but still) is fine. The computers are a mix of T420s and T430s. It's kind of embarassing for me because I was the one who proposed replacing the OEM Seagate drives in the first place in order to get "WD reliability".

Is there something in Thinkpads that causes them to be uncooperative with WD drives? Does the Active Protection System fuck with them or something?

Whatever you do, don't get a Surface Pro. Non-upgradeable, very flaky hardware, and impossible to repair. I speak from personal experience.

>2014
>Brother is still using a T60, wants new computer for university, needs something to write notes on
>"Get an X220t"
>No, goes out and buys a Surface Pro 3 for $1500
>1 year later
>Power jack behaving strangely
>Random lock-ups
>Keyboard only works intermittently, testing with other Surface units at the Microsoft store confirms that it's the keyboard port that's malfunctioning
>Brother stupidly drops the Surface just before we send it out for a warranty repair, screen cracked
>Find out it is impossible to replace the screen and the only option is to pay $500 to get a new unit
>Even with "warranty repairs", Microsoft just sends you a new unit
>The thing is practically hermetically sealed and impossible to open up, nothing can be changed out, nothing can be upgraded, if anything goes wrong then the whole tablet is worthless
>Sell the broken Surface for $400 and buy an X230 tablet, basically what I said to do in the first place
