I'm beginning to regret buying into the "$5" meme.

I think it's more of an electronics hobbyist gadget than a programmers one. Hence all the connections to be soldered to.
>>
What meme is this??
>>
>>52371256
pi zero
>>
>>52371089
The Pi came with the MHDMI>HDMI adapter, the screen came with the VGA>DVI adapter, and the DVI>HDMI adapter was like $2.

>>52371127
A Raspberry Pi Zero with all the basic connections required connections for it to get input, output, and storage.

>>52371128
That's next on my list. I'm thinking I might have to solder on the GPIO header and put the keyboard there, and then get a USB>Ethernet adapter.

>>52371192
yes

>>52371214
I WAS planning on using it as a NAS controller - my current one is a five year old Dell laptop running WinServe2016 which, while still operating relatively normally, no longer has a functional GPU.
Apparently I underestimated how much the thing can actually do.
>>
>>52371324
Nas controller, how can you connect hdd to it?
>>
>>52371368
Yeah that's what I just realized I can't do.
I didn't realize before it arrived that there's no separate power port. I figured I could have the network in one USB port, the HDD in the other, and the keyboard on the GPIO. But nope.

For a nas server get the $50 orange pi plus 2.
Better cpu, more ram, built in sata, and gigabit lan.
Also built in wifi if that's what you prefer.

>>
>>52371450
Is there anything...well, cheaper?
The server itself will be connected to a 10/100 switch so gigabit lan doesn't matter
Don't really want to spend more than $30 or so on this, considering my old server is technically still serving files on my network so I'm not too desperate to change it

pi 1 and 2 owner here....once it does not have Ethernet or wifi its a fucking waste. With the pi1&2 you booth the OS plug in the ethernet cable and SSH into it....install remote desktop and you're good to go.

$15 orange pi

you could condense it all down to a network connection of some sort and use SSH
>>
>>52371965
Problem is, I need to actually have it set up first to do that.
>>
Wait is there not a power button on this thing?
I plugged it into the wall but it won't turn on.

What are you actually using this for?

The idea of plugging random cords into a chip on my wall intrigues me

No you don't.

Why does /v/ keep buying cheap dev boards and then complaining about how hard and stupid it is to use them like you would a normal desktop PC?
>>
>>52371718
This.
Built in megabit lan, 3 usb ports and one otg.
Same processor as the 50 dollar board, but with only 1gb ram instead.

Amazing value for $15

overestimated. And that's still not right; you purchased something without knowing quite what it is.

There was a dude that did a 20GPIO port to VGA adapter. Might suit you better than... that

You're either misunderstanding what the OP is saying, or misunderstanding what the posts you reply to are saying

You also apparently have no idea how to use a computer

The computer you currently have is fine for recreational programming.

Do any of these boards have dual GbE, and ideally AES offloading?

I'd like to make a tiny custom router that's not complete shit.

I have some problems to use mine

I'm using hdmi output from rpi, an vga/hdmi converter to connect my vga input monitor.

and I tried to connect my composite output rpi to my RCA input television

but nothing appear on my screens.

Are you using an active adapter?
VGA is analog. HDMI is digital.

What kind of nas speeds can you get on that? My google search turned up results from 1MB/s to 7-8MB/s. I get 7-10MB/s with a usb hdd attached to my router, so i see no point in a pi nas if a router is faster.

>>52375799
I'm sorry, but what?
For $15 thats an amazing deal.

I dare you to find anything better for op but I'll give you $20 instead of 15.

It's still cheaper than the rpi after all those costs. Also has a better cpu and gpu.

Because it was fucking meant to be used as an overpowered microcontroller with all those GPIO pins not a fucking full fledged computer. So is you're disappointed, great, because that's your own fucking fault for buying something you don't even need.
>>
>>52380390
>overpowered microcontroller with all those GPIO pins
It completely sucks as a microcontroller though.
No real-time units, only basic digital pins and very limited hardware pwm.

Just buy a cheap chinese digikey clone for a dollar for low-level electronics. Just as retard-friendly as the Pi.

WTF man, im a Pi1, 2, A and many other small SoC boards owner and Ethernet is required only for certain tasks... a Pi Zero is SOOO MUCH over hyped, people buy it to be a hipster.

A zero is for these small nice projects you dont need Ethernet for, no output or input unless you only need hdmi for some visual project.

N00bs learn the art of selecting the specific board for its task, there is no allrounder.
