Times when /g/ was wrong. I'll start:

Retina displays taking over the market.

'We don't need high resolution displays"

"High resolution displays are pointless"

And now, retina quality displays are here and winning.

Holy fuck the anal devastation is wonderful.
>>

do you have proof?

>>52370333
Anyone have the screenshot of all the horrible predictions?
>>
>>52370293
browse newegg to see how many "high resolution laptops" you find

there are a few, but hardly "taking over the market"
>>
Unfortunately, this isn't true yet, and support for high dpi displays is shit under anything that isn't osx.
>>
>>52370567
GNOME handles it very well. KDE sort of does.

Windows is lagging ass, like always.

They're here, but not necessarily winning.

Bruh GNOME is on the level if not worse than Windows.

Until Wayland replaces xorg entirely there's nothing to hope about proper hidpi support for linux
>>
>>52370293

You're confusing /g/ as a collective with a few mouth foaming mac hating retards.

iirc when the retina MacBook was announced the consensus was more like;

>Dat screen, shame it's on a Mac.

>>52370605
Truth.
>>
>>52370614
Gnome has gotten a lot better for workflow and ease of use, but it's still inferior to KDE 5 in terms of beauty.

GNOME = a 6/10 butterface that gets the job done

KDE 5 = a 9/10 supermodel that shits herself when she has to blink and talk at the same time

>>52370648
Not truth. Why not just stick to 768p, faglord? A crisper display is always better. Current gen integrated graphics can handle the resolution except when gaming.
>>
>>52370293
High resolution displays are still pointless.
>>
>>52370615
I've seen dialog boxes for official included windows programs that were fucked up with display scaling.

As far as the 3rd party devs being lazy fucks, I simply haven't had this problem on osx. I haven't seen a low DPI window in years under osx. It even handles full screen games with aplomb.

On Windows (yes, even windows 10) I constantly need to fiddle with compatibility mode or adjust the scaling to get new programs to run the way they should.

I was here when the original "Retina" iPhone came out.

Holy shit was there a lot of "This shit is a completely useless waste of battery life", "It makes no difference at all" and "iSheep are just being sold snake oil". It was made even more cringeworthy a year or two down the line when every android device maker out there started putting high DPI displays into their higher end devices left and right and the same idiots were gloating about how "iSheep" were totally butthurt over android devices having high DPI displays.

But yeah... The thing about fanboys is that everything the products they're fans of don't have is completely useless and a waste of money and everything they do have, but their competition doesn't is somehow always super important. Other than that, when the devices they're fans of get something their competitors got long before the devices they're fans of always had those features and are never copycats or "stealing", but when the competitors get something their devices had first they're always copycats and "stealing".
>>
>>52370780
Probably. Just as an aside, how do you deal with the shit, shit, shit display on current think pads? The display on my T420 has a viewing angle of like 4 god damn degrees and the color saturation is literally 20% of the saturation of even my macbook air. No competition with my rMBP.

>>52370777
What, should we stick with 1080p then? We need to drive display resolution up to the point of not being able to discern individual pixels, that is the obvious goal.
>>
>>52370293

>>

I'll ask, why are you so shit at technology?

>>
>>52371421
The whole rationale for the Air series of Macbooks is not speed/resolution but battery life.
Given the secondary aim of lightness the size of the battery is important.
So Apple uses components in the Air that are economical on power. Low speed SSDs are lower power than either high speed SSDs or HDDs.
Similarly, Retina screens have much higher power demands.

Higher DPI is good and now it's cheap and widely available it's nice. It was never a deal breaker but it's nice to have say a 1080p 13 inch laptop. Or a 1080p phone.
It gets retarded up at the pissing match level though 5k 27 inch is just not worth the cost. Sure when it's old tech and it's cheap I won't turn it down but again it's not a deal breaker.
By and large we should all be happy we don't really have to see pixels anymore, and largely that's universal across phones and laptop and desktops.
Any more than what we have now is gonna start getting into audiophile territory, it'll just be autists trying to one up each other.

All of you posting about small workspaces can stop posting because you actually don't know what you're talking about.

Unlike on Windows OSX actually has decent scaling, you can have a 1440x900,1920x1200 or even 2560x1600 workspace - it's totally down to user preference.

We get it, you don't like Apple product, but at least form a coherent argument that doesn't make you look like a bunch of buttmad trolls.

yes and 1080p on a laptop looks fine, make text for example 1/4 of the size and its straining on the eyes.

High PPI is great because it makes text looks very crisp, but without scaling shit is just too small.
