So 4K Bluray disks will become available in 2-3 months time, but what exactly is it going to be played on?
I haven't seen any PC 4k drives. PS4 nor Xbox one support it.

Are they really going to be 2160p?

A 4K blu-ray player.
duh.
What kind of retarded question is that?
>>

You have to buy an HD BlueRay player. Samsung has announced one at CES for example.

Panasonic's got one on CES.

>The new format will support a resolution of 3840 x 2160, as well as high dynamic range (HDR), higher frame rates (up to 60 frames per second) and object-based immersive sound, such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.
>Video will be encoded under the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard, and use 10-bit colour depth and the Rec. 2020 colour space.

If it says 4k it has to be 4096x2160
If it says ULTRA HD it will likely be 3840x2160
>>

My mistake I thought they were going to parallel 4k and Ultra HD. Looks like they threw cinema res into the trash and are just using 3840.

is it a completely disk new format/codec or can I just rip it with my 5.25** blu ray drive and TVbluray players just dont support it because they cant decode it so fast ?

I own The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) in 4K and it looks great, but there isn't a significant gain over 1080p.

The best thing about blu-ray is still lossless audio, though. I'm saving up for a new receiver with Dolby Atmos processing.

This means that they've scanned the film in 4K and downscaled that to 1080p and released it on that disc. You could just as well call it a remaster.
>>
>>52369409
Well that doesn't make much sense. 1080 and 720 are both HD and defined by their vertical resolutions. To say something is 4k seems it should just mean 2160 vertical.

Either way, the new scan looks great. The 7.1 audio mix is really unnecessary, though, considering the core track is Dolby Mono.

Movie industry snobs.

UHD is for consumer plebs.
4K is for the professional artist who only accept the very best in image quality.

How do they even "scan" film?
Don't they use drum scanners, like photographers use to digitize 35mm film?

"4K" implies they are filming a fucking projection with a fucking digicam.

Because that's the final product, plus there's a limit to how much detail you can get out of different film stock.

the eva blurays just came out, which was made on 16mm, and there was debate among /a+m/ encoderfags over even releasing the series in 1080, since MadVR and MPV do such a good job with upscaling.

Seriously, its only in 1080 because of one really detailed map with topography and even then there wasn't that much of a difference.

i'm going out on a limb here and saying that because the new 4K discs will use HEVC , the current line up of players can't decode it/don't have the power for it and thus a new player is required.
If that is the case than a simple update on the consoles should be able to fix it.

bruh.. banding comes from compression not from not enough colors.
People already can't distinguish between the 16 million colors, 10bit ain't gonna help with that.
