I prefer Debian for nearly everything. The only reason I'm using Fedora on this laptop is that Sid is going through some major convulsions right now and Jessie doesn't have HiDPI support I need for the display. Once Stretch freezes I'll consider moving this laptop back to Debian if Fedora grates on my nerves too much.

WELL PLAYED OPENSUSE.
It's a piece of shit.
I remember the old days, I still have an old boxed version, it fucking worked flawless. Unlike this piece of shit.
That Microshill turd really killed openSUSE.

>using unstable tumbleweed
>not using the stable branch

Tumbleweed is mostly for testing.
>>
>>52362460
There is no stable branch anymore.
There is Tumbleweed - which is said to be a rolling stable, and there is LEAP.

LEAP is basically a SUSE Enterprise kernel and base system, with ALL THE LATEST BLEEDING EDGE SHIT on top.

The point is?
FUCK KNOWS.
It's like I would use a RHEL base, then fuck it's shit up with RAWHIDE packages.

openSUSE went full retard.
>>
>>52362474
Tumbleweed is the barely integrated bleeding-edge Arch-tier bullshit branch, Leap is stable.
>>
>>52362488
this
leap is for users who do not want to be fixing their os every other day
>>

> LEAP 42 milestone 1

> Gnome 3.16
> literally bleeding edge packages

Look I am all for this "stable base, fresh destop" thing. Trust me. That's why I thought Tumbleweed will be like super cool.

But the result is always ugly.
It's just something you cannot really do on Linux.
With FreeBSD it's kinda possible through Ports - but even Ports's quality is shit now. Back years ago I was able to pull up an entire desktop OS from Ports without any breakage.

Now I have been trying to do the same for months in virtual machines, and something is always broken.

The reason I am saying Linux distros are going downhill is because I used SID years ago. And guess what, IT WORKED.
I mean it's like Rawhide, and I had no breaks, no issues.
It was my main desktop for a year or two.

But now? Good luck.
Even Ubuntu's latest release is fucked up.
LTS is the only thing I install nowadays.

what the fuck are you talking about. Im running tumbleweed + Gnome3 for a couple of months now and it works fine
>>
>>52360044
Because Arch is superior.
>>
>>52362536
Try installing it now.
Just tried it yesterday.

1) Grab DVD
2) Installer is also lulz
> BTRFS for system
>>
>>52362536
tumleweed is broke as shit. Couldn't even install openbox without conflicts
>>
>>52362545
Fucking hotkeys.
Anyway.

Try installing it now.
Just tried it yesterday.

1) Grab DVD
2) Installer is also lulz
> BTRFS for system (/, /var, etc, with a gazillion pools)
> XFS for home (lol)
3) Select only core / minimal install
4) Try zypper dup, it will already break things
5) Install any package, breakage
6) Try installing a LAMP stack or anything meaningful...yepp, it's ded.

Even the open-vm packages are broken.
>>
>>52362474
Tumbleweed initially was meant as a testing ground. It never ceased being an unstable mess. The rolling model didn't work well for it either.
Also don't use LEAP. That switch of core needs some fixing before it'll work. Stick to 13.2 if you need an actually stable OS.
>>
>>52362612
but then you can just use Ubuntu LTS with your or other PPAs/pbuilder and you are good to go.
unless you are a die-hard openSUSE fan.

By the way I am thinking about moving to Gentoo, because of the fucking systemd.
The machine got Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on it, but the next LTS will have that cancer.

I hate it. It's such a pain in the fucking ass.
As long as you don't have to touch it, it's ok.

But have to write a service? Have to modify them?
Have to modify your boot, anything?
Want to find anything - which is a really easy task with any other init/log system?
FUCK YOU! Sincerely, Lennfart.

unless you are a die-hard openSUSE fan.
The main reason people sticked to openSUSE was Yast. OpenSUSE also used to be really stable, moreso than Ubuntu ever was. But you're right, other than Yast there weren't many big reasons to use openSUSE over Ubuntu.

>By the way I am thinking about moving to Gentoo, because of the fucking systemd.
Consider Manjaro. They released iso's with openRC instead of systemd, and they work quite well. There's also FreeBSD/PC-BSD.

Lennart a shit.

>There's also FreeBSD/PC-BSD.
I was thinking about using those, but even those I used FreeBSD on desktop, I am not so confident about having a live web server on it.

Like not just a server, you know, there is a PHP stack, with php modules (like suhosin), there is a mailer, and so on.

Honestly if you have a live server you are glad to just leave it alone as long as it works and you pray to the IT gods so it does not break with the security updates.
